I am currently on my last pair of 5a drum sticks so i need to go and buy some more. And i wondered how much sticks make a difference in the way you play/feel. Standard 5a sticks feel fine to me, so should i stick with them or try something else?
I also play classic rock/heavy metal if that might help in my selection.

ewww, I hate the big blobby tips those sticks.
I was torn between vater's thinner 7A sticks with the round tip, and their 5B with the heavier weight but triangle tips. then I was introduced to their 'fusion' sticks, which are just a bit lighter than the 5Bs (but still sufficiently heavier/thicker than the 7As!) and have the same rounded tips as the 7A.
lovely sticks, they are.

I would say 7A 5a 5b 2b are the most standard.

Either way, it's 5a or 5b.
But how much do sticks make a difference in playing and sound of the drums?

You need to go down to your local music store, as to try some out. try different types and see whats comfy for you. Don't go with what other people say, because it may be not the right stick for you. I use Travis Barker Sig sticks, I have got used to the feel of them, but i cant stand them cos they always break, so im looking for a similar stronger type:)

they make a huge difference, with all the versatility of the sticks...some break more or less, then youve got wood and nylon tips, types of woods, length, width, grips, heavier shoulders for more bounce. different shapes of the tips..etc etc.

My guitar center doesn't have much in the way of trying out sticks so i'll probably stick with the same ones i have now.

i got given a pair of 5b's free from a mate at school as he is the guitar technitian(sp?) for a status quo tribute band: bogus quo. well anyway..
at first i hated them because they were so thick, i dont know what wood they are but they are really really light, so i got used to them for a while. then i found bi old vic 5as which i personally love, and then inbetween i use a pair of vater 7a's but they are pretty screwed now so im gunna have to replace them.
i say you buy a couple cheap sticks of different sizes to find what size works best for you and then continue buying the ones you like most.
I use Vater 8a. I love those sticks. Nice light feel but very sturdy and durable. barrel shape tip on it. Havent broke a single pair.

Of what make are the sticks? Vic Firth or Vaters?

Fusions are Nice i used to use them, i use Los ANgeles 5A now though as they are more durable and have a fatter shoulder/shorter taper than 5a's

Thanks.
To threadstarter, I now use VicFirth 5a's and they are awesome sticks. I also use MP sigs, which have quite a wicked feel to them.

try out some Pro Mark Neil Peart sigs. They are a bit more expensive but the jap oak is a lot stronger...

I love the feel and weight of the Pearts but they sounded like crap on my cheapo 302's. Now that I've upgraded I'm going back to them. Point is you have to match the sticks to your kit. The Pearts are Jap Oak which is really hard wood and made the cheap brass cymbals sound like garbage can lids. Tips will make a difference also. Nylon will give you more definition.
