I run XP Media Edition, and when I log onto my account, it takes about 15 minutes for it to get past the log on screen, then it goes to my desktop and is froze for about another 10 minutes. From there on, my computer keeps making the grinding noise and freezes up randomly. Something else I noticed is that a lot of the processes don't show up in the bottom right taskbar. Anyone know what's going on?

If computer makes some unusual grinding noise, then it's probably hdd.

But it's probably just a virus/spyware/etc...

Did you try logging in the safe mode? If so, did it work and were there same problems?

Wait, I believe I figured it out. Zone Alarm finally was the first thing to load, and then everything sped up. Maybe it's something with it.

Probably, Zone alarm is a pretty crappy program anyways (imo)

Have you tried removing things from the start up using msconfig?

That should also help with speed of starting up your pc.

Have you checked your CPU fan to make sure it isn't clogged with crap?

Processor overheating could cause the system to do strange things/slow down.
