OK so I gave in and decided that everyone telling me that a Radeon 9000 is an ancient card were right and I went out and bought a Geforce 6600GT. I downloaded the NGO 83.60 drivers and started playing counterstrike source. I get the same FPS (like 30-60 with ever setting inc. resolution at the lowest) I also have dead bodies and ragdoll physics turned off!

I actually prefer my Radeon 9000 because when I run CSS in a window it looks a lot better with the Radeon. Anyone want to buy a 6600GT or can someone tell me what the problem might be?

I installed it myself so one could guess that would be the problem but I mean it detected the hardware, it's in the system profile, it installed the drivers... Man, this is depressing. :upset:

(I realize this is the second thread of me being a whiny bitch in the span of like 8 hours)

Start by trying official drivers...

So can I just download those drivers or do I have to uninstall these drivers and run Driver Cleaner in safemode? (btw I did start with the original drivers and got even worse results)

thanks

yes, I would use driver cleaner especially if you have 3rd party drivers installed.

It also might be your cooling. I was getting about 20-30fps when I installed my 6600GT as well and found out my CPU was running really hot. After I cleaned out my heatsink and replaced the fan the FPS shot up to 40-100.

Uninstall them, use driver cleaner and install the new ones.

I had a bad experience with the NGO driver. Nothing terrible, but enough to switch to the 83.90 drivers. I have an AGP 6600GT also. Works perfectly.

I don't have any other games installed.

I'm downloading omega drivers now, might as well try them all I guess.

Original Drivers: Game runs slow
NGo drivers: Still slow
Official Updated Drivers: Even slower
Omega drivers: Game doesn't run

Hmm, this really sounds like a hardware problem. I had a computer way worse than yours and it ran CS:S on Medium/High at 1024 x 968 at 50-60 all the time.

100 fps? Your monitor/eyes probably only get 60-80 of those.

OK, I just found out my power supply is 300w and the min req. for the card is 350w. The fan doesn't seem to be working on the card so I guess it's not getting power.

edit: the fan is working so I don't know again. :upset:

Anyone know what this could mean?

a) the software that comes with it to monitor and overclock doesnt show any information and has to close as soon as I open it

b) the software (easytune4) to monitor your cpu, videocard etc. also refuses to show videocard information.

Quite possibly the motherboard just doesnt support it or something

tbqh though, one time i tryed putting in my friends 9800 with my 5200, for no real reason at all, i connected that little cord thingy it has (5200 dont got it) and my powersupply went (KSSSSSSSSSSSS) and comp turned off. heh it turned back on though :p

oh yes it does

i burned a 450w with my 7800GT....thats myguess anyway

AMD 64 3500+
1.5GB RAM
GeForce 7800GT

well...it was ONE of the above anyway....or a combo of all

anyways, if you only have a 300w, and your getting the choppys, then that MIGHT have something to do with it

JohnXDoe

I have a stock 250 watt (345 watt max) Dell PS and it runs my 6600GT AGP no prob. If the fan is on and everything is moving along, I doubt if that's your problem. IMO it sounds like a software problem. Plus you installed that tweaked driver right off the bat. Which might still be lurking somewhere on your computer (check program files).

My suggestion is to start from step one. Uninstall everything that came with the card, including the drivers. Check your program files to make sure they are gone. Then use a registry cleaner such as CCleaner or Hijack This! to clear out whatever is left behind. Then pull your card out, put it back in, and install the driver that came with the card. It's worth a shot if you haven't done so already.

I'd buy an AMD processor if it were that simple, but I know that I'd probably have to upgrade the motherboard and stuff just for compatibility. :(

I know nothing about computer hardware though, so if someone could shine some light on the subject that would be good.

I doubt the processor is your problem. And you would have to change your mobo. How old is your current computer? Is it in good condition, or like a beat up old car?

IMO based on what I've read from you so far, it's one of two things. Either a bad card or bad software/drivers. Starting the install process from square one is often helpful. But a bad card isn't out of the question. That is often the case with computer hardware. You hear about bad vid cards, hard drives, and what not, all the time. Could be your case, too.

If the computer was ok before, the card is good, and the proper drivers/software installed cleanly, you should have no problem. If all else fails, return it for another card.

Hook me up. I bought a CSS = DOD Source combo for 60$ and I don't want to spend more money on the original CS.

OK, I think I'm set on moving to AMD.

AMD Athlon 64 3800+ (or 3200 even, depends if I cheap out/find a good deal...)
ASRock 939DUAL-SATA2 mobo (I have to cheap out somewhere)
1.25 ghz DDR2 pc3200 RAM
Geforce 6600GT (it's an MSI, 8000 3drating which is better than some other ones I looked into)

Tell me that computer wouldn't be crushed by source :(

Kevin, does the slowdown happen with all of your games, or just CS Source?

Valve rigged their Half-Life 2 source programs to run much slower on Nvidia cards, I'm afraid. Quite a hefty payoff from ATI I've heard, though. Anyway, there's a program you can download to trick Half-Life 2 into thinking that you have an ATI card, and the game will run like a dream.
