I've got this party coming up and I'm trying to compile a good playlist on my computer so I'm searching for good party songs. I'm also planning this in part as revenge on my loud neighbors who constantly play hip-hop and reggaeton until 4am a least 5 days a week.
So any and all recommendations are welcome.
Right now I've got some Stone Roses, Fatboy Slim, Primal Scream, and Bloc Party but I'm gonna need a lot more than that. Particular songs names are needed so I can find just what you mention.

I dunno what Stone Roses song could ever be considered a party song (unless 'dreary' is the new 'party') but you seem to be on the right track. Stick Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party and all that dancey rock muck on and you should be fine.

Kasabian.
Well, I think Debaser by the Pixies is possibly the perfect party song.
Other than that, here are a few good ones:
Blur - There's No Other One
Oasis - Cigaretted and Alcohol
Weezer - Buddy Holly
The Strokes - Someday
The Jam - Town Called Malice
The Cure - Friday I'm in Love
The Clash - Complete Control
Basically, you want catchy upbeat singles that a lot of people are going to recognise. I don't think the songs suggested above are anything particuarly special musically, but it's the sort of thing which keeps people happy and dancing. Also you will probably want to stray from Alt&Indie and make sure you have a good hip hop collection. Kanye, Beastie Boys, Jay Z, Dangerdoom, Atmosphere are all advised. There's nothing like a novelty rap song to finish off a party...I'm thinking MC Hammer.
Also bring a come Cryptopsy to piss off those neighbours.

Kasabian.
I'll always have a special place in my heart for Kasabian.

^^ - Funky, I'd love to see them sometime.
The Clash - White Riot or I Fought The Law would be pretty cool. Chuck in Plug In Baby by Muse.
Some Rage Against The Machine is usually good too. Good call on I Fought the Law

Slug is spot on with !!!. I'd also add some Broken Social Scene and Wolf Parade.
Maybe some Radiohead and Air. Talk Show Host is an awesome party song.

!
also, I would never play terrible mainstream hip hop at my party, even if it meant boring my guests to death with obscure indie music and jazz.
actually that's not entirely true, because my 'party artist' would have to be g love and special sauce which is very upbeat and funky.

is U2 considered an alternative rock band ???

PS Mainstream hiphop is OK imo as long as it is 10 years old or later.

If you simply don't like Hip Hop then don't play it.

ah fair enough. I do actually like some hip hop and r'n'b. just not anything that's actually popular right now. g love and special sauce is actually classified as hip hop blues (crazy as it sounds). I love the hilltop hoods as well (an aussie rap group).
edit: a couple of people have mentioned beck as good party music. I'd certainly play midnite vultures at a party. that'd be fantastic.

thanks for all the input everyone. There's definetly a lot of great ideas I completely forgot about here and some I didn't even realize could be party songs until you mentioned it.
And to answer Spat Out Path's question on the Stone Roses, both "Begging You" and "Fool's Gold" are great bouncy tunes that could get people dancing. Especially the extended version of "Fool's Gold". I don't think they sound too dreary.

wow, I forgot this thread was still around.
Anyway, maybe I should give you all an update. I party went great and I used a lot of your suggestions in the playlist. There was many empty bottles and massive hangovers in the morning. Even better, my neighbors upstairs were very annoyed - much to my delight.
But by all means, keep the songs coming. We all need some party songs now and then.
