you can go really fast.

jaco pastorius used 2 fingers for "donna lee," and you'd be hard pressed to find anything faster . . . the only other song i can think of is "textures" by cynic, where sean malone does some nice 32nd and 64th notes on his fretless, and of course, it sounds like **** . . .

I can almost match the speed of double thumbing, but I cheat and hit the string with the back of my nail in the process >.>

02-23-2006, 03:52 AM
well you can as shinobi said, hit the string by flicking down,so you can controll the playing at high speeds, and can go much faster
but sometimes if you are playing some death metal or such,i've found that most of the riffs are only 2 frets apart played up and down the strings,so you can only use 2 fingers due to space
and also as shinobi said, duble thumbing is a great way to accuaratly play fast notes,if you go to www.video.google.com (http://www.video.google.com) and search for ''wooten'' there is a video, that tells you how to duble thump,it is amazing,as once he breaks it down, its so simple, well to understand anyway :P

James Jamerson used 1 finger, and played lines that 3 fingering bassists find hard to copy.

ok,duble thumping makes sense, but one finger?
is there anything wrong with him?or is it just his preference

i wasnt, just unusual, the fact that he is pretty well known suggests that hi9s method works.
just an unusual technique
edit:
ok did a little research
he is endorsed by fender, and theres a good profile at http://www.philbrodieband.com/muso_james_jr.htm if anyone is interested

mmmm...
Geddy Lee also use one finger alot... but i think he "flicks" alot.
after what i have heard Donald "Duck" Dunn also use one finger.. it aint that unusual.
well, you can go as fast as you need using 2 fingers... i can go as fast with 2 as i can with 3, but sometimes i use 3 becouse its easier o the hand :p

I play with 2 fingers and the fastest I can go is up to 16 notes. Any faster than that I have a techinque with my index which can allow me to go up to 32 notes just using that finger.

you do know that saying that you can play 16th notes dont say a **** about how fast you are right? you almost have to include the BPM your playing them in....

I can play quarter notes faster than 16th notes.
With quarters at a high bpm and 16ths at low
Moral of the story. The note count doesn't matter, what really matters is the BPM. The note count is only a measure of how many notes per beat.

yeah, the beats per minute matter more than the notes. I've played songs in band with 16ths at mabye 40 bpm... but if you get quarter notes at like say... 200 bpm...the quarter notes will sound faster.
but for me, I can get 16ths at about 200 bpm with 2 fingers. I wrote a song that utilizes that, hopefully i can someday record it. :thumb:

yeah, i believe that's the fastest metallica song. I think Dyers Eve is the same speed, but the damage inc is pretty fast.
here are some faster songs for 16th notes.
death - lack of comprehension (the breakdown there with the fast bass drumming and 16ths is 204 bpm, and Steve Digiorgio played that)
cryptopsy - slit your guts (the entire opening is 200 bpm)
Meshuggah's I - that's also 200, and there is a straight 16th note run in there
slayer - raining blood, the fast 16th note run is 214 bpm
there are many more out there, thos were just ones that came to the top of my head

That is impossibly fast.
So fast the human ear couldn't distinguish between atacks, it would seem to be one really long note.

you have failed to see sarcasm. dumbass.
steve digiorgio uses 3 fingers, tom araya uses a pick if he even plugs his bass in... a little over 200 bpm 16th notes is no problem though

^^You two are failers.. Offending eachother on the internet is gay.
Speed with two fingers? I play fast enough, most of the time my left hand was the problem when I needed to go faster. The right hand will come when the left hand goes well.

If you thought he was seriously then you definately lose this arguement. It's not a matter of recognizing sarcasm, it's a matter of having common sense.

I don't think the bass plays that part, if we are thinking of the same part. There's a part where the guitar plays:
E|-5-4-3-0-6-4-3-0|
sixteenth notes
And the bass plays
E|-5-6-5-6|
Quarter notes
Is it that part?

I had no idea there was a Slayer song where the bass played something different from the rhythm guitar! (this is sarcasm btw, apparently it's hard to detect on the internet)
Anyway, fast two-finger bassists:
Steve Harris (Iron Maiden)
Geddy Lee (Rush)
Jari Karliunien (Stratovarius, last name spelled wrong)
Ron Royce (Coroner)
As Harris is a big influence on me, I tend to work toward playing with two fingers fairly often. It's a lot easier for even-numbered notes (like 16ths) to play with an even number of fingers, but for really fast triplets (not the galloping ones which Harris somehow can pull off with two), I prefer three.

i honestly dont know what he plays there. The way I play it it's 16th notes, and it's a little bit different than the guitar, but yeah, that's the part i was mentioning.
I wish slayer had a different bassist, one who actually could play and would write his own lines. Imagine the possibilites....

digiorgio plays with 3 fingers though… the cryptopsy bassist i dunno if he's keeping up with the tremolo picked guitars i can't really tell, but at least in their first album "blasphemy made flesh" where the bass is really up in the mix he plays the tremolo'd riffs at half speed, and well tom araya you can't ever hear him but yeah he doesn't play the same thing as the guitars he plays some slower figure you can see it on any live video for raining blood… and meshuggah their current bassist plays with pick dunno about their older ones though

1. He plays with three, classical style.
2. No, he doesn't play bass, but it shouldn't take too much adjusting to apply his crazy fast technique onto the instrument.

I play as fast as I need to. I can play the Donna Lee head up to Jaco speed easily enough. I don't really practice going faster anymore or measuring my speed, if something calls for fast playing then I will play fast. It's that easy. I'll just move my fingers quicker.

Why does everyone think Steve Harris uses only two fingers? It's fairly simple to see that he uses three on many parts if you've seen him play live. (ie. The "Run To The Hills" intro.)
Please don't start an arguement for I have seen it with my own eyes.

He's still playing with two, but his ring finger moves around because it's hard to control individually, and will move in coordination with the other two fingers but not actually hit the strings. The revelation that he uses only two fingers comes from interviews with the man himself. I'd take his word over yours any day.
