View Full Version : Very unconventional setup idea...

Here's the thing...
I like having my toms lower than I can get them with the bass drum there, so I have the bright idea of taking my bass, putting it on the side and using the slave pedal of my double kick and my main pedal, thus having my drums lower. I drew a ****ty pictures on paint to explain,
http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/7382/untitled0sn.th.png (http://img158.imageshack.us/my.php?image=untitled0sn.png)
The red crosses are the toms and snare, the blue swirl is the slave pedal and the blue cross is the main pedal. The big black thing is apparently the seat...
Good idea, bad idea?

If it suits you, I guess. To me it would just be a big pain in the *** to get all the parts and transport.

Well right now its everywhere from me trying to get the toms lower with the bass drum there. I just want it to work, so I don't care about moving it. I pretty much move around everyday anyway.

It seems like it'd be really tough to handle the main bass pedal. Unless I'm not understanding this properly.

Doesn't seem like it would work for a couple reasons.
1. Your main pedal is sideways which would be annoying.
2. Where would the hi-hat go?
3. You would have to buy stands for all the toms.
4. If you have floor toms the pedals would be pretty far apart.

You could put the hi-hat between the last tom and the bass drum. You might need a remote stand to do that though.
Setting up cymbals would be a bitch too.

True but would the remote hi-hat stand be able to fit by the toms in order to be next to the slave pedal?

I tried it out, it acctually worked. I can't use the main pedal much, though. It's a rack mounted kit, so that takes care of most of those other problems.
I'll post pictures later. I can see why no one sets their kit up like this, but I can't play double kick anyway so it makes no difference.

i like the diagram. i dont think your idea'll work.

Doesnt Stanton Moore have an aux bass like that? Why wouldn't it work? Unless she plays double pedal...

well if you have a rack this can work, but for transport this is a major pain i would think.

It'll work just fine as long as there is means to mount everything else. One of my friends used to play that way. I think there was even someone on here who used to play that way. You might not be able to have the bass drum completely sideways like that, but you'll be able to put it out of the way just fine.

Unconventional? Im the king of unconventional. I did the same thing but used only the slave.

Theres a couple of problems in acoustic situations because the bass drum probably won't project right exept for that I think its fine.

id kinda like to bring my toms lower....
Seems like too much of a hassle though, id need to get tons of gear to set it up.
If it works for you, then cool

Ha Drum Phil thats excellent, I love that set up.
TS, cool idea, surely you could move the bass drum just a little more in front of you? More or less like DP's set up, so you'd get more projection from it.

to me that would be just unconfortable

as long as you don't need the DP option then it's cool.
just try it, and post pics of yourself trying

get yourself a low-ride double tom stand and double pedal and you're good! lots of drummers have aux bass drums (bozzio?) and set it up kinda like that.
the drummer for ZZ Top set his up like that for a long while.

Drum phil, i tried that set-up as well once with a friends kit. Its a lovely way to set-up, and looks so odd but cool...The slave pedal works so well when the link-arm is perfectly straight ala DP, and its perfect for a holy tom roller.

throne height can help solve these tom problems. my toms were soo low without resorting to your setup idea, and then i raise my throne and then they were tooo low lol

Josh Freese has done this.

I don't really need the projection, it's just me playing in my small garage. Right now there's not enough room (I think) to move it to the front. But I'll fix that by moving some chairs around eventually.
Nice set up Phil, probably a better idea than mine.
I can't really have my throne much higher, my legs are already angled down pretty... big. I don't need anymore gear than I have to make it work, except I'm having problems with the cymbal placement. Pictures coming soon.

Hey guys I got this cool idea. Why not spend the time learning to play insteadof setting up your drumset. But I mean, What do I know.

Is it really that bad to experiment with new setups?

Here's another thought: maybe learning how to set it up is half the learning. No point in playing if you can't set up a kit properly. :chug:

Not to smash on your diagram or whatever.. but for god sakes just do it on DW's kitbuilder then post the pic!

^^ Oh yeah! I didn't think of that :smash:
Like I said, I can't play double kick yet, so I'm just using the slave pedal as my main pedal. The snare is between my legs. I don't know if you can see it from the pictures, but the high hat's are on the far left.
