So lately, especially since Munich and War of the Worlds weren't released too long ago, it seems like Spielberg has been taking a ton of slack; people saying his movies are too mainstream and that his movies are only entertaining/not artistic enough/whatever.

But to me, Spielberg can do just about anything, entertaining or "serious"; Schindler's List to Raiders of the Lost Ark, Amistad to The Terminal, ET to Saving Private Ryan. He practically perfected the summer blockbuster and made a modern war masterpiece. The only movies I haven't seen him tackle are gangster flicks and westerns, which I think he's capable of the latter.

But don't get me wrong, I'm not calling him a genius or my favorite director or anything like that, and yeah some of his recent movies haven't been too great (the ending to War of the Worlds is probably the worst I've ever seen), but in my opinion Spielberg is one of the greatest of this generation and as a fact some of his movies will go down as classics.

So yeah ITT discuss Spielberg

I think AI is extremely underrated.

I think AI is extremely underrated.

If you don't count the ending, it is. If you do, then it is rated perfectly. The movie is an artistic and plot-driven wonder until you reach the incredibly unsatisfying and hackneyed ending. Nearly everyone I know that hates AI, including me, only hates it for the ending.

Schindler's List is his best film IMO. It shows in his work that the subject was close to his heart.

He's done some good films and a lot of bad ones. He's always been a mainstream director, so it doesn't make sense that people would whine about it.

Yeah, he is a pretty good director, and given the amount of films his made, there are bound to be a couple of bad ones. He's just had a bad patch this year with War Of The Worlds and Munich. He hasn't made too many other bad films. E.T. and Hook do come to mind though.

Pinky and The Brain is probably his best work...

He's an incredible talent. And their is nothing wrong with being a "mainstream" filmaker. Many of our best directors are just that. Whether they are considered edgy or risk takers or not.

And his most rtecent work has been very good, IMO. The Terminal being his only misstep, really. Can''t win 'em all. But Minority Report, Catch Me If You Can, WOTW, and Munich are fine films, one and all. And look at this list of some of his best and better films:

The Sugarland Express
Jaws
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
1941
Raiders of the Lost Ark
E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
The Color Purple
Empire of the Sun
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Always
Jurassic Park
Schindler's List
The Lost World
Saving Private Ryan
Minority Report
Catch Me If You Can
War of the Worlds
Munich

Those are all really good films. Several of them classics for the filmaking ages. Jaws alone is a better movie then most directors can ever hope to make. I'd say he has the goods and shows no sign of fading.

I'm definitely a fan.

I remember being a kid and winning a re-released of E.T. at a Pizza Hut once, definitely one of my favorite movies of all time. Indiana Jones, also a classic, and of course, Saving Private Ryan, one of the best war movies ever.

Those are just some of my favorites; I've been putting off seeing Schindler's List for a while now :-/

i like his fantasy films, good pace and not overly geeky unlike other films, jurassic park and back to the future are two of my favorite movies. I liked WotW and havent seen munich. Heīs human he can make mistakes and has periods of less creativity like anyone, minority report is a movie that i didīnt like

He's good with action as well and not Jerry "let's explode a gas tanker on a highway with a 20 car pile up motorcycle chase" Bruckheimer.

Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay are the two worst people in the film industry at the moment.
