maybe some sort of led light that lights up when you hit the bass drum?
it looks like a bass atleast, judging from the hole on the other head..

that seems like a pretty reasonable awncer it just better not be his new black bass drum but his old one or that would be pretty stupid

It's definitely a drum trigger. you can see the piezo right there

im guessing the point is that it can double as either an acoustic or electronic drum. otherwise he might as well cut the drum in half, or rather, just use a smaller drum in the first place

I'm saying E-drum. Since he was talking about making his stagestar into an e-kit.

trigger...for an e-kit...
you win an e-head of lettuce for winning.
(who the hell guessed lettuce? what an idiot.)
yes, actually all that's left is to go buy a 1/4" jack and the roland foam cone and it's all done!
the springs make the bar easily adjustable in comparison to the pressure against the head.
Yes, i'm turning my stagestar into an e-kit, i've been planning it for a while now, glad to see it underway. It's coming to college with me, hopefully.

Heh Im looking at making something like this, only that triggers LEDs when you hit the drum, so it lights up when you hit it :) Thanks for the mounting idea. Looks cool

no clue how you'd do that, but good luck!
let me know when you do.
Yeah i'm tossing mesh heads on this... anyone know where to find a 2-ply 18" mesh head? :p

why 2 ply? does it matter with meshs?
nelldog
02-23-2006, 04:40 PM
i suppose they can split just like any head maybe not the led thing can work easily if you have the know how you just need to set up a current where the bass drum trigger is the switch

lightweight (loose?) 1ply heads fall "out of tune" (out of tension) much faster than 2ply.

that's a cool design chippy...how accurate do you think it'll be with faster/more complicated playing?
I guess I could just go to drumshed or ghostnote and find out, but I'm not into drum-building anymore.

Looks awesome! You said you're going to run it through your computer's MIDI port? I'm interested.
As for the 2-ply mesh heads..I don't know if there is such a thing, but I've been looking into these (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Drums/Percussion/Sticks/Accessories?sku=445444). A bit on the expensive side, but then again I don't know how much mesh heads usually cost.
I hope you don't mind if I borrow this idea. I'm going to refinish my old kit, and now I definetly want to turn it into an e-kit as well.

Thanks for the link, and about the heads, it doesn't matter how many plies there are to me..whatever is cheapest.

when it comes to mesh, the cheaper they are, the more they fall apart... kinda like Zildjian drumsticks... :p

Well i suppose an update is due...
so the next step is to attach the peizo element to the bridge there. I used Scotch Mounting Tape (http://www.buyonlinenow.com/viewproduct.asp?sku=MMM114) in double thickness (only so it'd clear the bolt heads, which are too close.)
http://inkinc.hostedz.com/images/drums/Ekit/KickPiezo3.jpg
the next step was to install the 1/4" jack. I picked this one from radio shack (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103454&cp=2032058.2032231.2032280&pg=6&y=9&x=13&numProdsPerPage=20&parentPage=family) since it came in a pack of two and had the longest threaded section... but unfortunately it was still too small. I was forced to countersink the hole...
http://inkinc.hostedz.com/images/drums/Ekit/Jack1.jpg
I wasn't sure where i wanted to put the jack, i was stuck with either on the top or under one of the spurs, but i ended up going with on top.

Next step was to sauter all the wiring together. I used a chunk of power cord off a dead lamp for this job... first i sautered it to the jack, then to the piezo. To solder it to the piezo, i used shrinkwrap... when using shrink wrap, you have to offset the lengths of your wire so that the exposed ends aren't touching, then solder together, then slide the 'wrap over and hit with a heat gun. Came out fantastic:
http://inkinc.hostedz.com/images/drums/Ekit/ShrinkWrap1.jpg
So now all i have to do is get the foam cone from musiciansfriend, stick it on, and BUY A FREAKING MODULE and use it. :D
http://inkinc.hostedz.com/images/drums/Ekit/KickBridge4.jpg
http://inkinc.hostedz.com/images/drums/Ekit/Kit1.jpg
I should add... total cost spend so far: $42.26 (but i have all the u-channel, wire, bridge squares, and 1 extra jack for the rest of the project, so...)

Very nice man, I'd suggest using the DM5 instead of the midi out, you can really control the sound alot more with the DM5, and achieve a much more natural sound.

yeah, i dunno bout modules yet, i haven't really looked into 'em, i just know i can't afford anything :p
ian, maybe as a side job... i like woodworking and tinkering and building things... but it's not $ enough as a career.

black... just pulled the wrap, sanded well, and used 1 coat of Minwax "Golden Oak" with 3 coats of gloss poly. the bass hoops are maple hoops from Explorer's Percussion, the bigger ones.
Whats your new kit is it Keller Shells?
Yeah, Dan of Raven Customs is building it with maple kellers. Satin black (it's got a purple tint in the right light). I love every bit of it.
Wow thats pretty awesome! I dig that
not as much as you'd dig my summer project:

My dad's 1978 Honda 550FOUR 4-cycle 4-cylinder 550cc BEAST. she needs new gaskets and a SERIOUS scrubbing from sitting dormant for 10 years.
You keep step by step pics of each project im guessing?
Sure do, for two reasons:
1) most of my drum projects i post on Drum Shed, and everyone asks for progress pics so they can learn/understand new methods etc. etc.
2) I love looking back and seeing what i've done.
