I got something today. I'm not going to show you until you help me set it up.

It's an upright and the action is way too high. How do I lower it?

there is an end pin on the bottom of the bass, loosen it and push it into the bass, then tighten it

that wont do a thing to adjust the action
you have to sand away the top of the bride till it is the right height
or buy an adjustable one or pay a whole lot of mony to have it professionally set up

You should be aware though, that the action on an upright is usually higher than on an electric. Almost twice as high. Maybe 3/16 inch at the end of the fingerboard for the G string.

Wow I'm not that much of a noob. I know it's supposed to be higher than electric. I'm saying, the height at the end of the G string is at least more than 2 inches.

cost me about $40 (australian) to get my action changed by a pro. Not that much at all.

Honestly if I were you, I would just try to buy an adjustable bridge. They are very nice and easy to use. Since I play upright for jazz I like my action really low, but when I play it for bluegrass, then I can adjust it higher for some slap action. I don't know how much the bridges cost though. You may want to look into it though. Its a good investment.

They are like...80-90 bucks. But there are some adjustable ones for 60 bucks on ebay.

from the picture you showed me it looks like your bridge is to far back
try moving it forward and it might stop tilting forward when you tune it

I think normally the bridge should be lined up with the little notches in the f holes. It looks like your's is too close to the fingerboard which will make the action higher than it would be. So if you loosen the strings and push the bridge down an inch or so the action might be a lot better.

If I ever take up another string instrument, it'll definitely be cello.

Nice bass, BV.

It might be worth it to take it to a music person and ask them to make the bridge adjustable. I did it to mine and it's a godsend. Also, that FAQ that Murdok posted was really nice, but you should be able to get your bass set up for $80 including instalation of the adjustable bridge. Anyway, you just gotta sand it down. Personally I'd take it in, but that's because i'm terrified of ****ing up my bass. Also, be aware that if you take the bridge off to fix it, you'll prolly need to adjust the soundpost.

Ok, upon closer examination the article totally doesn't mention that if you take pressure off the top of the bass, there's a good chance your soundpost will fall down. When this happens you need a special tool to fix it. This is why you should be wary of doing things like this.

Always make sure the soundpost is secure when you adjust the tension of the strings, otherwise the bass could cave in on you and potentially hurt or even kill you (its happened!).
