View Full Version : Punk's Not Dead--A Documentary
Rise Me Up

On the edge of the 30th anniversary of punk rock, Punk's Not Dead takes you into the sweaty underground clubs, backyard parties, recording studios, and yes, shopping malls and stadium shows where punk rock music and culture continue to thrive.
Thirty years after bands like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols infamously shocked the system with their hard, fast, status-quo-killing rock, the longest-running punk band in history is drawing bigger crowds than ever, “pop-punk” bands have found success on MTV, and kids too young to drive are forming bands that carry the torch for punk's raw, immediate sound. Meanwhile, “punk” has become a marketing concept to sell everything from cars to vodka, and dyed hair and piercings mark a rite of passage for thousands of kids. Can the true, nonconformist punk spirit still exist in today's corporatized culture?
Featuring interviews, performances, and behind-the-scenes journeys with the bands, labels, fans, and press who keep punk alive, Punk's Not Dead dares to juxtapose pop-punk's music and lifestyle against the roots in
the 70s and 80s, resulting in unexpected revelations.
A DIY search for the soul of a subculture and a celebration of all things loud, fast, and spiked, Punk's Not Dead shows punk is stronger and more relevant today than it's ever been.
Okay, now, some of that sounds crap, but read more on the site HERE. (http://www.punksnotdeadthemovie.com/) I think it will be a decent documentary, and I know I will see it in theaters (if it makes it to them) or buy the DVD.

LOL?

I read through the whole site a while back. If you want a spot in the doc, like a short interview or something like that you have to pay them.
They also mention they're covering some mainstream bands like My Chemical Romance (I think) and Yellowcard like they're actually contributing something. Lame.
Watch American Hardcore (http://www.americanhardcorefilm.com) instead.

I don't think there's anything wrong with covering Yellowcard and MCR, they're what punk is to most kids today. And of course, covering them isn't neccesarily saying good things about them. That Don Letts documentary was pretty hard on Rancid and Blink 182.

I'm just so damned sick of hardcore at the moment, every single band in the scene is something-core, and I'm so over it. I mean I play in a straight up punk band, a cure-esque post-punk band, and a new rockabilly band, and me and every musician I play with refuse to let the tiniest element of hardcore creep into our sound.
what's the difference between a music documentary and a rockumentary?
RIP Ian Curtis

I think rockumentaries are usually pisstakes, like Spinal Tap or Fear Of A Black Hat. Or rockumentaties are about one band/event (i.e. the woodstock movie) whereas music documentaries are about a scene or movement (i.e. punk attitude)

I think it looks interesting since it had such a wide variety in punk bands, but some of the bandsl ike my chemical romance, et, is a turn off.

Spinal Tap = mocumentary
Now, if this was like Spinal Tap, I'd defintely watch it.

Then again, I think it's important for something like this to be done about every ten years. The 80's had The Decline.

No, punk rock died when the first kid decided getting drunk, screaming oi and vandalising public property was cool.

I might see it. I guess it doesn't look that bad. With bands like Sham 69, NOFX, Circle Jerks, U.K. Subs, G.B.H., Subhumans, Stiff Little Fingers, Minor Threat, Vice Squad, Dropkick Murphys, The Adicts, Bad Religion, Black Flag, and Social Distortion in it, it can't be all that bad. Although Good Charlotte, Sum 41 and My Chemical Romance are also in it for some incomprehensible reason. :(

American Hardcore is a book. But Nick is right if this was a movie where they just make fun of punk, then I'd love it.

Do not demur Dave Berman. And if you think that is what punk is then you have no idea what you are talking about.

Me neither, I don't really care either. I stand by my statement about excessive drinking, vandalism, the word oi (not the sub genre of punk rock), and stupidity.

"Punk Rock died when the first kid said 'Punks not dead.'"
I <3 you so much Sam. Who decided that punk was dead? Who decided it was alive. Good, descent punk was never maminstream. Posers and pop-punk was mainstream. Was/is Exploited mainstream? No. They actually went back to an indie label to prove they never sold out and tried to be popular like some English wannabes *cough* shlt pistols *cough*.
Good punk was and always will be underground. Fact.

"Punk Rock died when the first kid said 'Punks not dead.'"
Whoever that kid was, or whoever said that is wrong, because punk rock doesnt belong to anyone, so long as one person out there has got the right idea about it, and i feel there are still alot of people (though the minority) who do know what its really about, it wont die.
Even when all the 'punks' are OI shouting gimps someine will get annoyed by that, and will find something of value from the true message.

Punk is/was a genre of music that came about as a result of dislike for the overblown guitar solo arena bands of the 70s.

But it's so much more than that.
I FORGOT HARDCORE.
The older I become
I can't help thinking hard about,
What's really gonna happen,
And what's in store for
Us and them is bull****,
And if we're gonna make it work
We've gotta care together
And see this too the end, see it to the end
(Chorus)
It'll take some time to fix it up
But that is something we must do,
With solid hearts and clearer minds,
We'll raise our voice and blast right through.
We'll stop the ones who **** it up,
And show the world that they can't stop the crew.
The crew is me, the crew is you, yeah we're the crew!
The threat of war ain't over,
And yes I fear it's getting near,
With all this hate inside us,
It all may just start.
Here now will you listen,
Or would you rather just ignore
You say we have no future,
Do we have a chance? Do we have a chance?!
(Repeat Chorus)
