That another computer on your internet network has the same IP address as the computer you are using.

Easy enough to fix:

Start>>Control Panel>>Network and Internet Connections>>Network Connections>>1394 Connection-->Right Click-->Properties>>Select Internet Protocol>>Properties>>Then, you can type one in if you want, or request another I think.

1394 is Firewire connection, look for Local Area Connection.

Local Area Connection -> Right click -> Properties
Internet Protocol TCP/IP -> Highlight -> Properties
Highlight the bubble use the following IP Address and use the following DNS server addresses.

i.e. ip address to use (referring to linksys routers)

IP address you'll want to put in:

192.168.1.103 (usually you'll have a computer already on the network using 192.168.1.100, so you can set it to anything)

Subnet Mask to use (it's usually filled in, most routers nowadays use Class A Subnet Masks, just in case it isn't there it'll be)

255.255.255.0

Default Gateway (again, referring to Linksys)

192.168.1.1

As for the DNS server addresses, you'll have to get those from your ISP.

But ones that I believe are universal that usually work are:

Preferred DNS: 4.2.2.1
Alternate DNS: 4.2.2.2

If you're running XP SP2, I have a couple commands you can try here in the command prompt.

Go to Start -> Run -> CMD and hit enter

Inside here type these commands in this order

C:\Documents and Settings\blahblah>netsh i i r resetlog.txt

it'll do nothing but go to another c prompt, if you get any other text under this, you typed it in wrong

the next command to type in will reset your winsock catalogue, which is

C:\Documents and Settings\blahblah>netsh w r

if you type this in correct it'll say "Successfully reset winsock catalogue, must reboot computer to finish reset"

Then reboot your computer. Now keep in mind resetting the winsock catalogue will shut off any firewalls and security you have set up, so you might need to reset that back up.

If that doesn't fix your IP address conflict, try resetting your router...if that doesn't fix it, try shutting off the other computer on the network and see if you're able to access it.

If it works then, then the other computer might have a hardset IP, you would just need to change that, if it still doesn't work...then your ethernet card is fojacked. Try getting a new one or call the pc manufacturer.

It's really quite easy. Set both computer to 'obtain ip address automatically' instead of specifying both.

Right, if it's set to obtain though already, he might need to specify one.

What I would try first actually is turning off all other computers on the network, if that still doesn't work...try following my other steps.

Just restart your computer, so your assigned a new IP. One of the computers on your network as setup a Static IP which can sometimes conflict when a PC connecting with a dyanmic one gets issued the same one from the router.

That sometimes fixes it, but in my experiences have had to do netshell commands to reinstall the protocol.
