I know this is so dense of me. But the Fender Bassman (http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=2171000010). Is it a guitar amp, a bass amp or both?

I'm sorry for this

guitar amp. "By the ‘60s and ‘70s, the original all-tube “Tweed” 4 x 10 Bassman gained popularity with rock, country, and blues guitarists as a great-sounding, reliable, easy to use guitar amp."

would it still work as a bass amp?

sure, just dont turn it up loud. bass amps need more power. thats why a 400watt bass amp is relative to a 100 watt guitar amp.

I thought the point of differenciating between bass and guitar amps was the lower frequencies of a bass would wreck a guitar amp and vice versa?

^ Yes, and the fact that to amplify such low-end vibrations to an audible point, you need a more powerful power amp.

The Bassman was originally designed as a bass amp. It instantly found favour with guitarists, however, and you will see far more guitarists than bassists using vintage/reissue Bassmans nowadays. HOWEVER: Fender's current line of budget bass amps are still called Bassman. So in fact there are Bassman guitar amps and Bassman bass amps. The rule of thumb is any Bassman produced before 1980 is a guitar amp. :thumb:

Interesting side note: the Marshall 1959 Super Lead Plexi, one of the most legendary amps ever and the amp that spawned the Marshall line, was a complete rip-off of the Bassman circuitry.

So the amp I posted a link to, guitar yeah?

Also, rather than start another topic, is that thing loud enough to gig with a drummer who thinks he's Keith Moon (and is just as loud, just far less skillful)?

^ It's 4x10, and I think it's around 40 watts? 40 tube watts ~ 100 SS watts, so you're OK. My drummer is FCUKING loud and my Marshall VS65R (65 watt) did just fine.

would it still work as a bass amp?

Yes. Provided they still stock it with bass speakers.

I think theyre 50W, which isnt very much for bass, although it would make one sweet studio amp for a bass player.
