Why not use coated emp? I find that my favourite head, easy to use and i supose a good "all rounder" IMO

on toms emps are fine nothing wrong with them at all, on a snare, definatly not. i have 1 step worse than the emp, i have the Emp X. it makes the drum dead, on a snare u are best off with a 1 ply head, not a 2 ply

sorry guys! It made my snare sound awesome, how ever that was cos i out it on an "unbranded snare" and the previous head was stock. Im using a tama one at the mind and that needs replacing. :) So ill use your ideas!

eh...the emp may have sounded better than the stock, but thats because the stock wasn't very good to start with. does anyone ever even check that thread when i post it?

^ I have an emporer on my snare, over an ambassador. Tuned up real high, I like it. Yeah I read it.

^the combo is really popular in my area, despite my protests :p really loud timbalish pop sound with no ringing..i suppose some people like it. i hate the sound though

Well It rings a lot , very much like a timbale. Without the Aquarian studio ring it sounds like that, with it- it's very poppy. Without the snares it's very nice sounding bongo/timbale world sounding.
I got a snare through the mail and it came with an emp. Not my normal choice but I actually liked it more then I thought. I still start with an amb, if that doesnt do it try a CS, and if that doesnt do it go with a P3.

ive used clear G2 on snares before. its actually a very good sound.
for those that said it doesnt ring with a 2ply head.... obviously youve never tried one before
it rings, it rings plenty, just as much as a CS but with a very sharp stick definition.
some of you guys are all talk and no experience, i swear :p
coated amb/snareside amb is what I use. Ive also used G1coated over hazy 300. Pretty good combos. The cs/snareside amb is a good combo too. I havent tried it on my own snare but GC here has them on some of their snares. Sounds pretty good even though all GC does is crank the crap out of the snare.

Coated Emperor X will do the job perfectly

Now, please define this ring for me, since I have no experience. Is this a good long lasting tone or just a quick whoong after a rimshot?
Tuning these damn emps and empX's for my school, a fair number of friends and god knows how many new customers who won't listen to me when I tell them they will get more tone out of an amb or g1, I'm tired of hearing subjective stories of how much this and that will ring or sound good.
Take note, I'm not starting an argument, I want to know how much "rings plenty" is. Maybe the difference between a coated emperor and a clear g2 is a very stark one, since I've never had anyone pick this up from me before (for a snare), let alone ask about it's tuning.

i dunno about that, i have one, and my snare sounds fairly dead, i have coated emp. X/ss amb, and it just sounds dead, because u have a 2ply with the extra power center dot thingy, just really dead
