Yes, it is safe.
I boil for about ten minutes per string.
Boil them in a saucepan.

Best to wipe your strings with rubbing alcohol.

i do it all the time. The reason strings sound dead is because all of the dead skin and oil and whatnot that gets caught in the little grooves. Boiling them cleans the grooves out. I suggest you reserve a pot for boiling strings and boiling strings only. i don't know if it's safe to eat out of a pot you boiled nickel in.

Put the strings in a pot full of water. put it on high, let the water come to a rolling boil. Let the strings sit in the boiling water for at least ten minutes. Then take the strings out and let them dry. then you restring.

yes ive heard that its better to soak them in alcohol from a bunch of people on these forums.. but what alcohol do you use - plain rubbing? -- and do you soak them or wipe them?

and for boiling - i use rotosounds, and like many others, they have threads on the ends by the tuner area, and by the bridge.. will these get ****ed up when you boil it?
thx -

Apparently, denatured alcohol works the best for cleaning them.

I wouldn't think it would matter much... But you could always hang the end of the strings on the edge of the saucepan so that the thread is above the water.

Boiling strings works fine imo, though I've only done it once.

I was basically pure alcohol, some old stuff my dad had in a huge bottle. Label is faded away into existance...

i boil rotosounds. i just leave the thread part (the part near the tuners, not the bridge above the water.

I think if I ever get really cheap I'm going to try to leave the strings on the bass and put a piece of plastic under the strings between them and the fretboard. Then I'm going to try to clean them with alcohol.

For the person who kept asking and got no answer... Most would recommend taking the strings off. If you do leave them on, try the above. Don't not protect your fretboard because the alcohol could mess up your fretboard.

Good luck.
