So today I went to the famous "Guitar, amp and Keyboards centre to try out some possible basses I would be buying. I have £1800 to spend. So I played all the following basses (bear in mind they have a huge Warwick section):
Warwick Corvette standard
Warwick Thumb Bolt on
Warick Thumb neckthrough
Fender P bass MIA standard
Fender P bass (the one with the Humbucker)
Warwick Vampire LTD 2000
Warwick Infinity LTD 2000
Warwick Corvette Bleached blonde LTD (???)
Wow all these basses were superb. The main battle was between the Vampire and the Infinity. The infinity was such a beautiful instument and played so nicely and the access to the frets we made so easy, the sound was powerfull and had excelent mids and the controls were awesome. The Vampire was excelent but not as good. The inlays were awesome but it was very trebly and bitey and lacked mids. Growly as hell though. The P basses were everything I expected. nothing more nothing less. Thumb sounded close to the vampire.
Sorry im breif but I have work in 10 mins lol
I answer any question tonight
so i take it the shape of the bass is not an issue, becuase personally I hate the vampire....................
plus is this just one of those............"I have money and am going to buy stuff" threads or is there something specific you are asking?

GAK must be a pretty cool place to be when you have money.
They didn't want to know me when I went there to discover my next purchase before I came across money.

I went to try a Precision. Waited in a cue for 10 minutes, got to the counter, the bloke walked off and served some other guy
Andertons are the most helpful guys out there, I took my fretless to have the radius set and they did it for free :D

Can't you understand the position of such shops? They don't want people sitting murdering Aeroplane all day unless they're going to actually buy a bass.
It's not just that they want to know that you HAVE money, it's that they want to know how much money. It's important so that you don't say
"Hey...I wanna get a bass. Can I try that Warwick please?"
"Ok sure, i'll set it up for you."
"Cheers, that was awesome. I'll take the Epiphone Thunderbird please."
Also, it's "queue".
Finally, why didn't you try out a Fender jazz if you tried two P basses?

I didn't expect to get to play their basses all day. I just wanted to have a go with some more expensive stuff so that I could get an idea of what I would want to buy next so I can see how much I need to be saving.
It wasn't even busy on that day. The problem is the guy working there had a complete hostility towards me and my friends. It makes it hard to make expensive decesions when you feel the staff are against you and arn't helpful.
I wouldn't go back to GAK now, its not worth it.
I agree with everyone who have said Andertons FTW. Does the bass have a security tag on it? No? well you can take it off the shelf yourself, go into a practice room and try it for as long as you want.

 And if it does, ask them and they're happy to take the tag off, even if it's a £2000 bass and you're a 16 year old kid with a dodgy haircut

Yeah its in Brighton, Its a smallish shop but is packed with loads of guitars and its bass section is as big as the guitar section. The staff there are pretty hostile actually, they arent that helpful to be honest. There is a guy named Graham who is a prick. lol when I went there about 2 years ago to play a MIM Fender, he actually said I coulnt play it becuase it was "out of my range" and he had to play it for me to see what it sounded like. ****ing twat. oh yeah and he is ginger :thumb:
Wait, the Vampire you played "lacked mids, but was growly as hell?"
Explain.

it depends what you like..they have a goood range of fender, warwick, musicman, ashdown amps, mesa boogie amps, eden amps, pedals plus a great guitar section and a good drum section..they also have friendly knowledgable staff
its quite a big shop..but if you are near london then you have the bass cellar in denmark street which is a great shop..
andertons is worth checking out though
go to their site at www.andertonsonline.co.uk
I wonder if that's a pre-req for working at a place like this.
"You must be generally friendly, knowledgable, and professional."
Anyone found to be "not friendly" will immediately be fired.

yay, andertons is my local music shop (live about 20 mins away) and its got some pretty good prices on Warwicks, but most of their other stuff is overpriced (i got my Thumb there for about 750 :thumb: )
soundcontrol in London are gits now
everytime you ask if you can try something, they say "Are you going to buy this today?" If you say no, they refuse to let you try it, and if you say yes they look very sceptically at you and follow you around until you leave, in the hope that it will help you buy something
Except for one guy, with dark hair, and who directed us to the Pizza Express where they play jazz, after the shop had closed.
I liked him. He let me play a Spector Euro lots, and various grand+ fenders knowing i had no intention of buying them.

I tend to go in shops when they're fairly quiet in the week. This means they're generally not expecting to sell anything, but I don't camp in there for too long.
Half an hour (over a 2-3 basses) is my usual stint. I'm alwats polite and they're generally not doing anything anyway.

Anyone after some good helpful staff try kempsters swindon, the bass selection isn't huge its more towards the £400+ market they have good bass though.
The drum section they have is great though, good selection of drums and cymbals.
The staff are just great my freind wanted to learn guitar and they let him plug a gibson les paul in and play, even taught him something because he didn't know how to play now that is service.

Strange that, cos he lets me play whatever i want without asking and he always gives me huge discounts... I've found him to be really nice, once you show him that you can actually play. He knocked £200 off my Fender 60's J and just cos i asked him...

lol ive only been playing two years and im 18 so perhaps that had anything to do with it. I dunno. Hes had this certain mood about him, like he wanted me to go before I even spoke to him. He did drive to a warehouse to pickup a warwick thumb :thumb: so I guess thats good service.
