Has anyone seen the new chips ahoy commercial? It's claymation and has a life-size cookie and a bunch of punk rockers singing "Chips ahoy! oi! oi! oi!", then they say "chunky, not punky."

I know it sounds like i'm kidding, but I'm dead serious here. Maybe someone can get a link.

Speaking of weird/bad adverts, did anyone see McDonald's new advertising campaign on TV aimed at adults? It's so sexist. There's basically some scenes of cliched patriarchy with the roles reversed, for example a builder working and then some woman passes underneath his ladder and SHE dogwhistles at HIM, or a guy passing by a repairman's van and seeing someone sitting with their big boots up on the dashboard reading a newspaper, and then he lowers the newspaper and it's a woman and she winks at him 'lewdly'. All the time the announcer is saying something along the lines of "The world is changing, there's no place for a man, but luckily, if you go to McDonalds, you can get a MAN'S BURGER for only £1.99, or the MANLY MAN'S BURGER for £2.99!"

WHAT THE FUUCK! This really pissed me off. Since when is it alright to mock what feminism took a century to achieve, and then make money out of it? This probably sounds like a lot of petty indignance to you.

The cookie advert sounds about right. Punks like to eat cookies and shout Oi a lot.

Haven't seen the McD's one. Sounds like it may just be a UK thing.

But seriously, don't expect anything from a corporation who wants teenagers to bone a hamburger.

You seriously don't think I said the world is going to s'hit trying to mean exactly that. It's an obvious exaggeration which I do more than I even try.

And it's not a good commercial. Just because it deals with punk you don't have to like it, it's stupid, unfunny, and doesn't serve its purpose. You'll remember it because you feel identified with it but why should normal people remember this or, mantain the link between punks and cookies in their minds? A commercial needs to have a hook, a motto and something to make people remember it. Not to make punks think they are better because they're on a TV commercial.

One Step Beyond
02-25-2006, 05:05 PM
I could care less what it deals with really. I don't even listen to very much punk anymore. I don't identify with it, which is probably one reason I can laugh at it so easily.

How does it not serve it's purpose? It's short, entertaining, and obviously has gotten people thinking about it.

It has a hook to younger crowds, who see punk as a trendy thing. They aren't targeted out "true" punks or anything like that.

And you connect cookies with punk now, at least for the time being, so it does have a way for people to remember it.

Come one dude, it's just a damned commercial.

And as I said, the only reason there are posts here is because there are punks in the commercial. Put any other thing on it and it wouldn't be discussed anywhere in the net, and you wouldn't think it's catchy or anything. And I'd say you'd probably find it annoying.

On a serious note, I thinkt hese types of things are just caused by people wanting to be obscure. I'll admit it does sorta bother me when things I like get really popular, but I think deep inside everyone does too. It does sorta bother me when I see Minor Threat shirts being sold at Hot Topic, but if you think about it, is that really gonna tear apart punk? Even if it does, you can still hide out in your room and listen to SSD and Screeching Weasel.

It's just a problem of people wanting to keeping something to themselves and not share because they don't think others are worthy of knowing about it. I used to be the same way. But you have to get over it, because what fun is knowing about something if you can't enjoy it with someone else?

I'd be miffed, I'll admit that. But I'd never let it upset me, because then I have more people who I can talk to Latterman about, and they may be more open to learning more about what music is about, and then I'd have gained more people to give music to and get music from.

Thats what every show is like at my town its soo good.

I guess i dont like it when some other people liking my music that i do but i dont care about it that much. However it does annoy me when people pretend to like certain bands because other people do, even when they dont actually listen to them

If you guys are so worried about the commercialization of punk you're about 25 years late.

I'd say about 30 is more accurate.

Well, considering that none of us are 25 years old.

Most people pass over the good music at Hot Topic for the new underOATH shirt anyway. Plus this Hot Topic wasent as much of a trendy store as it was covering all genres of music, it was cool.

And to stay on topic, cookies r00l.
And as to the cds, it's never hard to find some good Cruxshadows or VNV Nation since they just sit there while all the trendy kids buy the MCR cds. I have no idea where I'd get industrial without Hot Topic, actually. None of the other cd stores sell any Apoptygma Berzerk or even The Birthday Massacre, and they're fairly wellknown (er....I think TBM is getting to be more wellknown...umm...fine go with Rammstein, I know they're more common). I can think of one store where I might stand a chance of finding industrial cds. It's the only store where I ever found cds by rather obscure ska bands (well, not obscure, but certainly not 3rd wave super-popular stuff)

All the bands you just mentioned are popular among scene industrial kids.

Making HT the only store that sells that stuff. I've never seen any industrial stuff in any other store. I just named whatever ones my friends have gotten me to listen to, so if they're telling me scene industrial bands (that sounds too weird....scene kids listen to fake emo), blame them ;)

I still want to know where I can buy Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, Malice Mizer, Psycho Le Cemu, etc. Those ones I definitely haven't seen anywhere, but I want J-rock cds.

THere are scene kids for all kinds of genres. =\

I love j-rock, but you have to order that stuff.

About the conversation going on the last page: I don't know if it was indirectly directed to me (nice word game there, or whatever that is) but just in case I'll write my thoughts. I wish punk was mainstream. I mean, I'd be really happy if lots of people loved the same music I love, and I try to force people into my music, so far I've made 10 people like punk in part because of me.

My point was that the commerical sucked. End.

I still think it does, it has nothing to do with it being about punks or whatever it is, I'm not a punk anyway, I just like the music, I don't care if "real punk is dead" or whatever you want to say about that nor I care about punkness in general. The only reason why I said the commercial sucked is because it does, and because there is no reason to put punks in a comercial about cookies. What's the point? Nothing, it's like it's done with a random commercial generator.

And by the way, shouldn't this thread be closed like....4 pages ago? Or moved to the pit?

1) Punk is popular among preteens now
2) Punky and chunky rhyme
3) Ahoy and Oi rhyme
4) British monkeys are funny

It makes perfect sense from an advertising stand point. There was probably a former punk on the team who thought it up.

Whatever Nick...

You know this won't lead anywhere, you like it I don't, some people like it some don't. You can defend the ad whatever you want and you won't convince me to like it nor I'll do the same with any of you. What I still don't understand is why don't you close the damn thread.

I don't care that you don't like it. I'm just tired of people thinking this one commercial will make punk commercialized or kill it or some stupid **** like that. Don't like the commercial, fine. I hate most commercials that people find entertaining.

And I'm not closing it because a) it is driving people crazy that I'm not and it's funny and b) I don't feel right about closing a thread with an unfinished argument because it makes bad blood.

But I think this one is finished, so I'll close it finally.

I still love you unibrowed spanish fag.
