View Full Version : Ddrum Diablo Series - Comparible To What?

Alright I did some searching and read some threads and noticed that just about everyone hates these. (http://www.ddrum.com/diablo.htm) Now for $600 Canadian at my local shop, it doesnt seem like that bad of a deal, and the colours do look good together. My question is - what is it comparable to from companies such as Pearl or Tama? I own a 6pc Tama Swingstar setup right now, and I was wondering if these Diablos as they are called are a step down or are about the same? I was also looking at replacing the stock heads with Remo Ebony heads, if that will make a difference.

All I know is that they're some of the ugliest drums I've ever seen. They'd go nicely with your Z Customs

But honestly, they might be ok. The only thing that jumps out at me is 100% mahogany, not the best wood out there.

Only thing is youre not allowed to play the drums at my music store until you buy them, so I have no way of trying them. Its a rip to the max.

They are a visual step up, and quality wise, a small crawl forward. Money wise, its a giant 'accidentally hit reverse into a trashcan' step back.

Both mahogany. Although the higher end DD kits are nice !

So they will sound about the same as the ones I have now? As long as they dont sound like hitting a cat with a broom then I suppose Ill look into them some more

i cant really comment on the playablity but man those colours are ugly. Stay away in my opinion just for the looks

Cat with a broom? Z customs? I think so :)

SpikedCola
02-20-2006, 04:11 PM
Red and black? Theyre my two favourite colours. That kit didnt look bad in my opinion anyways, and the colours were more vivid in person. And leave my poor Z Customs alone. Maybe Ill sell them and get some A Custom's just to shut all of you up :p

hey, no i have the kit! i like the sound IMO. However i still need to replace the stock heads as they are terrible. i thought it was a great deal at the time, but i wasnt aware of hee various kits around at that time :( but im happy with what i got, and esp. seem sit came with good durable stands!

Buying a new kit for the colour? Just refinish it, It'd be quite the expeirence and save you a couple hundred.

As you wish, I highly recommend not doing so ... Stage Custom's are in your range. So are the Sonor Force 3005 ( Jungle Set ! YEAH ! ) WHICH is ALL maple mind you. Which kicks the living **** out of philipine mahogany.

For me its whatevers available locally because I have no credit card, so no MF. And as long as it sounds equal to my swingstars (with new heads of course) then Im sold. Thats all I was looking for really, the sound of them.

mmm, the powdercoating is cheap and not as well done as it should be, the bearing edges aren't the greatest, and the wraps are pfff... they're like a Tama Swingstar or Pearl Forum in fancy colors.

DDrum's upper lines are godly... but the diablos? keep walkin'...

As apposed to the colour ? Than your whole theory is completely WHACK man. Replace your current kit with new heads man.

swingstars are great beginner drums, wtf you talkin' bout.

you seen TTTSNB's kit? it's a swingstar...

I just said I liked the colour. Im sure if you saw a nice set of drums and they were puke coloured, youd be turned off towards them. And I just put new ebony heads on my kit, but I dont like how tall my bass drum is. Sure if a drum set looks good Im going to like it more than an ugly one, but if I can find a set that sounds good AND looks good, then I see nothing against that, vs one that sounds good but looks like *** on a stick.

I know theyre a beginner kit, but Im not looking to move up yet, just because Im not that good. Id like to get something in my price range and get better, rather than buy a 12pc double bass DW set and show up at a show and cant play worth crap.

Your going to spend all that money just so you can have a cooler looking drumset, that sounds just like the one you have now? I personally can't understand that, sorry. Take that $600 and replace your Z Customs, or buy new hardware, or possibly save up more and buy a better quality drumset, like a Sonor Force 3005 or Mapex Pro M. Oh, and that ddrum looks like crap, in my opinion anyways.

I would honostly recommend against it ( as i've stated ) it'd only cost you more. But as you wish man. Good luck.

Why do people come on here and ask questions, then disregard any advice given?

All I asked was how they sounded, if they were comparible to my Swingstars. All I needed to hear was 'yes they will sound about the same' or 'no they will sound much worse'. I didnt ask for this whole thing to start but Ill be the bigger person and stop. Just figured that forums were a place for personal opinion.

the dominoins are good. the all maple ones. Those are so nice. Ive played them in a local shop. The guy who owns the shop liked em so much he bought them for himself just so he could use them on a new years show he was playing.

Yeah he's a nice guy, I could get the entire set of Ebony skins for free if I tried. And yeah I know everyones just giving personal opinion, its just that I get frusterated when I ask something and people blow it out of proportion.

To answer your question about the Remo Ebony heads. I wouldn't use them as batters, but they're not bad as resos.

Note taken. How about pearl exports? Just out of curiosity this (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Drums/Percussion/Acoustic/Drums?sku=447878) didnt look like too bad of a deal, except its more than I need. Or are Exports frowned apon aswell?

100 percent poplar is worse than 100 percent mohogany. I have a poplar set, and it sucks. Plus isn't that rather out of your price range ? Sonor 3005's are in that range, much better.

Upgrade for sound not looks. Its just a waste of money. By the way, I think those drums look like some cheap toy drums.

Agreed. But again, do as you please. I personally favor the white sparkle for sonor 3005's. Jungle Set! DO IT!.or not, no worries.

ok, i have a question... why are you looking into the same level quality drums as the set you have right now, that doesnt make sense.
or is there something wrong with your set right now?

i would highly, highly recomend in finding an all maple kit. ddrum would be a unnecessary purchase. i'd really recommend searching into a kit for tama or pdp.

Because I dont like Tama's tom holder setup. You cant bring them closer to you, and Im looking at going to a 20" bass drum instead of my 22". Plus Ive had them for awhile so I think its just time for a change anyways.

There's nothing wrong with mahogany. It's all about the quality of the wood used.

Personally i think you should just keep your kit now and save up for a good one.
Its really stupid to keep buying beginner sets over and over and waste all that money. Just think, your paying 600 bucks for a 2 inch smaller bass drum, toms that are a little closer, and a finish that is catchy, but will get boring after a month.
But i honesly dont care and cant tell you what to do with your money, just a suggestion and what i would do.

02-21-2006, 06:59 AM
Alright, thanks for the input. What would you suggest as being a 'good' kit from Tama, Pearl, DW, etc?

We_Love_Lime
02-21-2006, 07:18 AM
Tama- Starclassic and Up
Pearl- Sessions and Up?
Sonor- 2005's and Up
Mapex- M Birch and UP
Yamaha- StageCustom/Oak Customs and Up

santi3hg
02-21-2006, 07:50 AM
eh im not sure on the Pearl Sessions and up. and i wouldnt go get a dw if i were you either. A Tama Starclassic or Yamaha-Stage Custom. I would recommend a PDP LX seeing as it is the kit i have and bought for 1700.

what i meant by the DW by the way is that buying a kit thats worth 2500 and up is something a bit irresponsible, same with almost high ends, look into intermediate kits. which im sure everywhere can recommend you one here.

SpikedCola
02-21-2006, 05:28 PM
Ive got an intermediate kit and I was looking to buy another along the same level, but I was told not to, to save my money and get a pro set (even though I dont think Ill be able to afford one for some time). Ill just have to browse around and see if any good sets come on sale

If you like that set-up, wait till Ddrum releases theur Ash kits. Its a 100% ash kit, 13x7 snare, 12x8 rack tom, 14" and 16" floor toms. They look REALLY good, and I hear from people that went to NAMM that they sound amazing.

0O0O Ash, I was looking into those, Gretsch have them out right now,Catalina Ash, Was going to get them, Or Sonor 3005 Jungle, Or DD Ash, but now i just think im going to wait till im 40 and buy the Orions.
