Well, I went and got some glitter today, and gave it a whirl:

Green, Red and White. Now, these pictures are kind of weird, as was the experiment, because I only had green stain. So the base color is green, and it looks kinda funky for white and red.

All things considered, I'm really really happy. Those are permanently attached, and I didn't use any sort of adhesive. I just put the glitter on while the stain was still wet, and they stuck.

Obviously, I still have a lot of practice.

And you might be wondering why there are large spots in there where there isn't glitter, that was intentional. I was doing some testing.

Deffenitly not bad for a first try. No custom finish though ;). Hah but keep at it man, It's good to see you are taking the affermative to do something.

All right, here are some more picutres (I tried turning the flash on)

You can see now what I mean when I said the green base screwed it up a bit. The biggest problem I have is applying the sparkles really thoroughly. Any ideas?

I really like the look of the red one. I plan on refinishing my drums, but I'm waiting until it gets a little warmer so I can use my garage.

Cool...

? ... Are you saying that it's a custom finish because he litterally wrote the guide to refenishing?

I think you should try hand placing each sparkle one by one. But seriously it looks pretty good. What kind of drum are you thinking of using it on?

I have about 20 vintage drum shells that I aquired for free, including tama royalstars and ludwig olive/blue and keyhole badge drums. On all of them, the wraps are shot, so I've stripped a set's worth

eh, i think I read your post incorrectly, saying that its his first time trying stuff like that :p

anyways CW, are you spreading it as sort of a paste?

No, I'm not. What I'm doing is applying the stain, and then quickly pouring the sparkles on there in liberal amounts, letting it sit for a little bit, and then getting rid of the excess sparkles. Not very efficient, but this is just an experiment.

I think what you're looking at maybe is the places where I applied too much stain, and it ran...

I also tried miing the sparkles into the stain, that did NOT work at all. What I do want to try is mixing the sparkles into some clearcoat, but unfortunately I have none with me.

Thats a lot of shells dude. Are you trying to make your own refionshed set? Because that would be pretty sweet. Seriously, if I had the money I would love to do that kind of thing.

CombatWombat3

Ya, that's seriously what I'm trying to do. And believe me, if I had money, this project would have been done a long time ago. But luckily, I don't so instead I spend my time doing things like this and get really cool ideas.

That's awesome. I don't have any advice on the sparkles. Sometimes you can buy like craola paint with sparkles. I don't know, I'm not much of an artist.

The first red one would look real, chirstmas-y. But all of them look good, can't wait to see what you finish with this.

Lime... what exactly is your definition of custom? Obviously, it's done by him, by hand, which basically makes it 'custom.'

Anyway, that'll be hot if you get it down.

Well I was saying Finished by a "Proffesional" whether a custom company or a regular big named one. Non the less it looks very good.

Is your technique apply paint then when it's still wet put on the glitter. Cuz if it isn't you could try that. Otherwise it looks like your getting there.

I got half way through this thread and decided to post this.

Maybe you could use a fertilizer dispenser for the glitter. The glitter might be too fine for it, but it's worth a shot.

Well...considering it says Tama Royalstar in it, that'sa pretty good indication that it's a royalstar. :)

But I definetely have some work to do.

Combat, where the heck did you get all those shells!?

CombatWombat3

Free!

Haha....

My uncle is an art teacher, and he was doing this African drum project with a bunch of middleschoolers. So he got this vintage drum company to donate a bunch of shells (30ish) to him for free. Well, he didn't use all of them, so guess who got them?

And I talked to his supplier, and he said that I could probably get a whole bunch of shells of my choosing for really cheap.

ACtually, it is. I jus remeasured it, and it's 36"x14". It's been a while since I had measured that.

for getting the sparkles on evenly, why not try laying out a big line and rolling the drum through them? couldn't hurt to try.

CombatWombat3
02-20-2006, 10:22 PM
Well, that's not the problem. What I did with these, jsut to test it, was to literally pour the sprinkles on the wet stain totally covering the stain. And as you can see, that didn't work too well. There are still some gaps.

if i had a spair drum id try taking some clear coating or lacquor and mixing the spakles into the clear coating but just a little and mix it up good and see how that came out when you put the clear coating on and i would get as fine of sparkles as i could find
