The Replacements started out as a punk rock band in Minneapolis, alongside Hüsker Dü. They were considerably more drunken and stupid than Hüsker Dü, but were awesome nonetheless. And like Hüsker Dü they evolved and changed their sound a whole lot, and went on to put out major label records.

Yeah.

Check out the 'Replacements Stink' EP. It's good.

That's my thread.

I've heard some songs from the Replacements Stink EP and some stuff from Let It Be and enjoyed them, but I still haven't picked up an album. I've been meaning to for a while though.

Yeah, The Replacements are great. Let It Be is probably ma favourite album but that EP is good too. It's similar to early Husker Du but in a better way I guess.

I'll listen to Husker Du. Drunk/stupid music doesn't sound appealing to me, though. You need to patronize your music better.

I'm listening to Let it Be right now. I didn't like it when I first got it, but right now I'm liking it.

The Replacements are more then awesome..

They got better and better as they went.

Hootenanny is awesome, and the choice albums are Tim, Let it Be, and mayhaps Pleased to Meet Me, even if it is a bit more commercially accessible. It's all excellent regardless.

Westerberg went on to a pretty slamming solo career, to which he is still enjoying.

The Replacements were never a punk band.

I like them, but Husker Du won the friendly rivalry.

Let it Be is a great album.

Let It Be is an awesome album. I think they had one before that called Sorry Ma, Forgot to take out the trash, which I really want to hear.

The Replacements weren't really "stupid," although their live shows were drunken piles of chaos and didn't quite live up to their brilliant studio albums. I have Let It Be and it's reall great. Like Husker Du, they eventually moved away from the hardcore scene to become more accessible and incorporate different styles/tighter songwriting into their albums. But The 'Mats only had one real genius instead of two: Paul Westerberg.

He sounds like Kurt Cobain, but predates him by a while. I like his voice better because the passion sounds more sincere, and plus he wrote far better lyrics. My favorite lyrics ever are from the song "Bastards of Young":

The ones that love us best
are the ones we'll lay to rest
and visit their graves on holidays at best

The ones that love us least
are the ones we'll die to please
If it's any consolation, I don't begin to understand them.

Kids Don't Follow.

How were they not a punk band DBoon?
By being an alt. rock band.

The Replacements are/were awesome, but I've always preferred Westerberg's solo career. And Tommy Stinson's strangely. Suicaine Gratification is one of the greatest albums ever made.

The Replacements were never a punk band.

Of course they were bud. Their early records were really just typical punk with a frontman who had a knack for melody and ballads. And even on Let It Be, "We're Coming Out" is such a great punk rock song. Whoever the guitarist was, the guy that died (Bobby? One of the Stinsons or whatever), was really the reason for the split. Westerberg didn't want to play punk rock anymore so he moved towards a more alt-rock/alt-country (Probably the first band to cover that territory) beat and would only put a couple fast songs so as to appease the guitarist. TOMMY! THAT WAS HIS NAME! But eventually, Tommy lost out.

Let It Be is one of the best teenage records ever, along with Zen Arcade. The Replacements have done so much for music in their volatile career. They helped to bridge the gap between punk and alt-rock and they essentially created alt-country. The Jayhawks, Uncle Tupelo, Whiskey Town, all of them reference the 'Mats.

And yeah mang, there's a difference between being drunken debauchers and stupid.

Isn't it awesome that Tommy was, what, 16 when he played on Let It Be? I mean, Jesus, it's great to hear kids make good music. Sorta like the Age of Quarrel.

Tommy, now of Guns N' Roses, was the bassist. Bob Stinson played guitar.

Ah, whatever. Point remainds. Bobby wanted punk. Paul wanted ballads. Compromise = Let It Be. Paul's ego = Bobby going off and dying.

So I just listened to Let It Be for the first time. Some songs were pretty good, but overall it didn't do too much for me. Maybe multiple listens will help.

Yeah before he was an asshole pretentious fag.

I think that filter needs to be changed. An asshole is grammatically correct, and sounds normal, but an asshole just sounds stupid. They should change it to a word that begins with a vowel sound so it doesn't screw up the whole sentence.

Some of his solo stuff rules, so is pretty crappy. Heartbreaker is amazing, as is most of his stuff with the Cardinals.

I love playing "Alex Chilton"; it's such fine written, catchy tune.

Perhaps, but I'd say The Jayhawks, Uncle Tupelo, etc are much more "Country" than The Replacements.

Oh yeah, of course they were more country, but the Replacements influence on the genre can't be overlooked. Gram Parsons might not sound very rock and roll by today's standards, but back then, he was a badass. Replacements may not be so country when you got U. Tupelo, but back then, they definately had some twang.
