I saw this thread and I posted my two cents. He says that a 22x28 bass drum feels the same as a 22x16. Can this be true, or am I just an ***?

I think it is true, because its still just hitting a head, the length will have nothing to do with it. I mean how much does air weigh? And so little air aswell.

nonsense!

I've no experience with that huge varying difference between bass drums, but yeah I'd say it was about the same "feel" when playing it. Obviously it's going to sound different.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only thing that affects how a bass feels when you hit it is: Your beater, the tension of the head, and whether or not the reso is ported. Or if you just plain don't have a reso.

Surely if the reso being ported/reso head affected the feel, then so would the length of the drum?

The length of the drum does matter. You can notice a difference with 12x8 and 12x9 toms.

If length wouldn't affect the sound, why would they make them in different lengths.

Although I thought he was asking about "feel", rather than sound.

It goes with both, having a 12x8 and 12x9 will change the feel and sound.

If tuned exactly the same, they would definatley feel different, but theres a chance you could make them feel pretty similar with different tunings(Which you would have anyway, because they are different drums that sound best at different tunings.)

Of course, Ive heard of 22x20 (dumb size) sounding just like a 22x18 if tuned right. But Im sure a 22x28 in no way can sound or feel like a 22x16.

sound can be close with tuning. but feel will be different when not ported. ported, then its the same.

yeah, i've heard ported bass' feel different and that's just a small hole in the head. I figure adding a good 12 in. in length is going to do something to how it feels but i wouldn't know for sure.
