Hello, don't know if this has been done before, but i thought it would be interesting. Basically, post your favorite and least favorite set up of a pro drummer, and why if you want.

I know a lot of you are barker bashers but I love his setup. Smaller kits are great, thats kinda how my drums are and I love it, I added an extra tom, but just couldn't get the ride in the right spot so I got rid of it

Worst kit set up would have to be tre Cool from green day.....I hate the size of his tom and the angle he has it on.

I love Mike Portnoys Purple Monster.

I really hate Jet's drummers kit, and the sound that it produces on the album. absolutly horrible.

Hmmmmm...I really like Josh Freese's set up (the one they show on the DW site, also the one he uses with APC). I also watched the Roadrunner United DVD that shows footage of them making the album, and the setup of the kit Joey plays on it is quite nice, it's very clean, and I like the sound of the drums.

Thats chris slade or cliff williams. I forget which is drums and which is bass.

I rather like Matt McDermotts (Bouncing souls) setup but i hate Portnoys double kit setup.

I dont like any 4 piece.

for little kits, my fav is chris pennie's (dillinger escape plan). playing with a small set like that really helps bring out your rudimental skill.

big kits... martin lopez... but probably more because of the drummer than the actual set.

one idea i found interesting, i have a friend who plays (he's very good), he's left handed, but plays on a right-handed set... at first he did just because he didnt know that you could set it up left-handed (lol) but now he sets up like that just because he likes the feel.

Lease Favorite=the drummer from the white stripes new album, and it sounds terrible because she doesnt know how to play it.

Bonham#1!
02-17-2006, 08:21 PM
As much as I love Bonham I dont like the one tom and two floor tom thing, i found it really different from mine when we played at bar that already had a kit there, and it was bonzo style. For some reason I couldnt do fast rolls.

Yep, Carls the man. ELP, Asia, Atomic Rooster (Off the top of my head)

Nothing against Mitch Mitchell, But his name comes up all the time in the underrated threads. He was beat out for the perussion spot in Keith Emerson and Greg Lakes band by Palmer.

ELM just does not seem right haha.

that's actually Chris Slade on the living in donington DVD, but yes, that set up is mad sick with the 2 bass drums up by his head

i also like Chris Adlers mapex kit he used at MD, and i like Taylor Hawkins kit he used on the One by One tour.

Least Favorite: I love metallica, but i hate lars setup (the one before load, reload, crap, etc...). well the cymbals are alright, but the tom angles bug the hell out of me. i wonder how he didnt bust through the heads after every song.

Favorite: Its kinda like lars' new setup, but i love vinnie pauls drums. sabians are the best and the sound he gets out of his drums is amazing. plus he doesnt tilt his toms to a 90 degree angle

Favorite= Martin Lopez's(Nice and clean setup, cool positioning of chinas, toms, Trym's from Emperor(Minus the horrible snare height and angle, great 4 rack metal setup, I love the row of cymbals he uses, makes alot of fills alot easier), Derek Roddy's new one(Love the weird tom setup and the hihat positioning)
Least Favorite= Travis Barker's (...nuff said), Portnoy's new double kit (awkward looking setup, rediculously high crashes, hard to reach ride, etc), Hellhammer's (Great drummer, but his setup just...doesn't make any sense)

I always like Ginger Baker's set up. I'll probably play a set similar to that when I get a pro kit. I like Bonham's too, but I probably wouldn't have drums that big.

damn, you stole my answer! :) I'd say Stephen has the best sounding kit there is, especially the way he mics it or softens it for certain songs...runner up would be Greg Saunier of Deerhoof, he gets an incredible sound and adds another layer of life to their great live show.

Portnoy must have felt so naked playing on that kit.

Favorite: Peart's pre R30 kit. (Red Sparkle DW Collector's kit with coated amb batters-- Vapor Trails Kit). He got such a great sound out of that kit... I wish he would have stuck with coated ambs on his toms instead of going to the DW stock heads. *Shrug*. Runner up: Purple Monster. Not albino. Purple.

BEST - Chad Smith - Either his Octo kit or the one he played on the By the way tour, I love that kind of setup and his cymbals are fantastic.

WORST - Ian Paice - I saw a clip of him and chad smith doing a clinic and his setup just looks plain WIERD, even in right handed format I can't get my head around it

Another setup which I like is dom famularos, wired but could be fun to play

On the whole 4 piece set thing. It seems to really have been a fad recently to play a 4 piece. And I know I'm gonna hear oh rudiments this, oh groove that, but the drummers i see doing it like basically any punk/emo/hardcore/mainstream metal (not to say all, just alot) have no groove, use no rudiments per se, play extremely basic beats, maybe throw in some 16th double pedal runs, and don't have any sort of personality jump out on the drums, such as ?uestlove for one. I for one would be extremely limited on a 4 piece. Plus i just love toms

Bozzio is brilliant. He's always been one of my favorites.

I could never handle a setup like that the way he does. The way he uses all his options is part of his great drumming. I don't even know what some of those things are, but he manages to fit them in everywhere. I liked the old video of Bozzio in concert (the one with the percussion ensemble) better than the Fantomas one, but they're both good. There's some cool videos of him on Vicfirth.com.
