This is probably a stupid question, but I'm gonna ask it anyway. Would I be able to get more low-end out of maple or birch shells? Right now I'm trying to decide whether to get the Mapex M Birch or the Mapex Pro M, and I need don't really know what the different woods sound like. Thanks! :chug:

Theres an explanation on the Pearl website, I was looking a few weeks back. Ive forgot what it said though.
If you want a cheap Maple kit look at the Peace DNAs, 100% Maple but for £399

chances are you couldn't tell the difference very well, between woods. Edges and heads and tuning > wood type, when it comes to priority.
Low end will give you "warm" sounding drums, meaning not-easily-heard-over-guitars-and-everyone-else kind of a sound. If you want drums that PROJECT, i.e. knock your socks off even over 2 screaming guitars and a bassist and some crazy vocallist, you want HIGH end -- that high cuts through other noise.
Maple is a "warm" wood and birch is a "projecting" wood... so to answer your question, maple. If you want SERIOUS low end, though, look into mahogany.

Yeah Chippy has it.
Thats why my next kit will be Birch and not Maple.

Yeah, maple will be warmer, but if you're looking to cut through birch is the wood option. If you're willing to go to a material that isn't wood, acrylic is also a good choice, cut through, huge sound, but not much warmth. Acrylic kits sound huge.

if you want projection and warmth, check out the oak customs or beech customs with bigger sizes.

^ They don't have to be bigger sizes. I played a 10" beech tom at my local shop and that thing had a great low end and projected nicely aswell.
