Ancient Chinese proverb says:
Mystical mountain path my yield fruit
But boy may also cremate a yak.

It means both yes, no and maybe.

Im new to all this "Challenge" business.
I've read through the rules but Im alittle confused as to how to enter.

Do I post my entry in this thread?

No, put the entry into the thread saying Challenge 103, "Stem". This thread is kind of meant to be for entrants to discuss entries and stuff, but from what I've seen it just ends up as people joking around.

No I haven't. I've only heard Dillinger cover "Come To Daddy". Weird stuff

Anyhow, I reckon we should adjust the rules a little making it compulsory to at least give out a couple of brief sentences on people pieces just to show that the voters are actually acknowledging the persons work and to offer a little feedback. Anyone else agree? Disagree?

DFelon204409
02-26-2006, 11:27 PM
Agreed. People have been getting sloppy as of late. Users won't grow if there aren't crits included. I feel I'm partially to blame because I enjoy being a part of these challenges but I'm reluctant to give really good crits for everybody because I have to write 1/2 page-1 page long e-mail crits on 11 poems a week for poetry class. When people see leadership slack it just sort of falls out. This challenge I'll step it up and I expect others will too. Or else I'll lower their rep, which is of course, incredibly valuable.

RunAmokRampant
02-27-2006, 02:03 AM
Only a few lines would suffice I think. If someone wants something explained about a votesr crit about their work, then they can ask to elaborate. I'm just sick of only having a number next my name but I won't deny that I haven't slacked off a couple of times but yeah, we should all step up a bit a regard each other's work a bit more.

And another thing, making up shoddy excuses like "I didn't have time" is utter bollocks. If you entered, you share the responsiblity and the commitment to take time in reviewing others work like everyone else.

The S&L and LC forum elitists say that the quality of the forums are going downhill. But they're the only ones to blame for slacking off or not contributing enough.

ATC
02-27-2006, 02:25 AM
I agree with both of you. A one line critique should be mandatory. It's the only way to sustain the challenges. Critting in here has helped me so much in my poetry and my course at uni is so much the better for it.
Dfelon, I was under the impression the rep system's gone, nein? It's not a disincentive now, is it?

DFelon204409
02-27-2006, 08:15 AM
I was making a joke about how worthless rep is.

BBB, I just wanted to say that "the masses" refers to all the flower's friends because the flower told me that she liked not being in a relationship so she can work on other friendships. So for that line to be singular wouldn't make sense. Thank you very much for the kind words however.

I'm in total agreement with the atleast one line of comment for each song rule that seems to be coming into effect. It's not that hard to write just a small comment on why you voted a certain way or what your general feeling was.

Plus it might bring a little more conversation in here....

............................GRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr !

We had to give our drummer the boot... Lazy f.cker!! Rushing around like Mad to get a new one (The old one is broken... ) and get him to learn the songs before April in order to play a big show we have coming up. We already had to cancel two possible support slot shows this Month.... GRrrrrr.

Still... kind of feeling optimistic over the oppotunity to work with someone new. but still.... Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Why can't some people just practice to a metronome every now and then.... probably because of an over inflated ego.

We are waiting to get our demo back from a couple of months ago... A friend was doing it at JMC (Sound Engineering College) but he's been busy with assessments and the desk our stuff was done on has been down for awhile.. We were 'spose to go in to finish off vocals the other day but couldn't book studio time... everythings a bit hectic there at the moment...

Maybe I might try and get a sound clip from some live footage off a DVD from our last show.... Any suggestions of a decent program to do this???

I quite like the acoustic stuff, though I notice you say you'll remix the songs into a more electronic ambient style. This is probably a good thing, while I do like the acoustic stuff I just feel you could certainly expand and be far more creative in the sounds you want to use in a different format.

DFelon- This starts off incredibly strong but, but towards the end sounds too self-important. Tossing in random names didn’t help me get into the story any more. Still, you had terrific wording in parts.

About the second two names, I hope you realized I was talking about The Beatles.

About the self-importance, that's the whole point of the poem. I write things that are circular and rotate around themselves. Instead of being an axis for somebody else's rotation and being able to share loving experiences with them, I manage to converge in on myself. That's why the poem is incredibly circular. Notice references to aging/grandparents, redness/fire, music/guitar, basketball, and trick endings laced in the front and back of the poem suggested that it all comes back into itself and is incredibly circular and that that is what cripples the writer. I feel like the way the images resonate and correlate didn't really mean anything to anybody else or at least y'all just didn't notice it. Except maybe ATC.

Bigbadbob
03-06-2006, 06:11 PM
Circular.... The western mind/culture works more linear. Thats what I drew from your opening anyway. I subscribe more to the Neal Peart philosophy "I dont write anything too personal because people dont want to hear it".

Meh neither right nor wrong.

jurialmunkey
03-06-2006, 08:30 PM
Circular.... The western mind/culture works more linear.

Just like how the world was flat.... Now it's round or spherical... or a string or something.

Linear like Leviathan... Round and round and round in a line getting bigger and smaller...

Small>>>>>Big>>>>>Small (upside down and round and round... put your left foot in and shake it all about...)

Or something....

I've lost the plot.

Hey DF, I did realize you were talking about the Beatles with John and Paul. That's not the part I was referring to. And sure, it had a bit of circular rhythm to it, but it all still just seemed far too self-indulgent, which I know now was your point. However, I still just didn't dig it.
