Now for Kirk and Dave...
Speed- Dave > Kirk
Skill - Kirk > Dave
Soul - Kirk > Dave
Riff Writing - Dave > Kirk
Luckier, richer, and more famous - Kirk > Dave
My favorite - Kirk > Dave
that's all in my opinion
Never thought I'd agree with you!
But, I agree with you, to a point. was the Luckier, richer, and more famous needed though?
My personal favourite is Dave, I also think Dave has more soul then he is often given credit for. Whether he has more soul then Hammett, I'd probably say Hammett.
Edit: The few songs I like Kirk's solos (Fade To Black for example) I think Kirk has huge emotion in, I don't think Mustaine could ever have that much emotion in a solo, so I prefer Kirk in that sense, but unfortunately, Kirk didn't write enough good solos :(

Perhaps if he did more solos then we could have a good comparison between the 3, but until then I think you'll be the only one.

Ill just come in here by saying :
In New Zealand, we had this Top 1000 Rock songs of All Time on The Rock FM. And Enter Sandman won. The thing I hate more than the idea of a countdown of this magnitude on a mainstream radio channel, is casual Metallica fans, the people that think Enter Sandman is the greatest, heaviest song ever invented. For shame NZ for shame. :upset: And Master Of Puppets was nowhere to be seen in the countdown. All Black Album, Load, Reload and St. Anger songs. :amaze: There was One.....but that's it.

i love james's solos he does solos in concert if u go to their concerts u will see that they are all skilled. id have to say they are all very skilled and we are all lucky to have skilled musicians in this genre. most bands just hit their instruments and scream bands like metallica, megadeath, slayer, etc. are good at what they do and i dont care what band it is as long as its metal. each of them have areas that are better.
edit: i just wanted to add, just because somethings mainstream does not make it bad nor does it make it good. enter sandman is a great song and it is heavy, no not the heaviest MOP runs circles around it but enter sandman is great and deserves to be up there. its finally nice that the world sees Metallica as a force in music

I've seen Metallica twice. I never doubted his skill on Guitar, when did you see that? Point is he rarely solos on Metallica records and that's what was being discussed.

Right, james is rhythm guitarist and kirk basically does most solos, but that's just because he and james want him to. Imagine if james did whole guitar parts, and vocals. That would leave kirk out of the band basically. I like James' solo in NEM, although he should have made it a bit longer. It's too short. Hmm, did james or kirk write that solo?

You have a lot to learn about music, my friend.
Since when does being the singer mean that you can't play lead guitar? I'm guessing you've never heard Death, Bodom, Megadeth... actually, I'm going to guess that maybe you've never heard any other metal band?
Oh, and contrary to what Kirk Hammett says about his non solo playing now (I've already proved myself, Metallica fans knwo that i can write solos).... solos are not just some guy in a spotlight wanking off (sadly it is a lot), its supposed to add something to a song.

i wunna learn how to make that sound real bad its not a pick scrape and i doubt its a regular slide maybe a weird setting on his amp any ideas...?
Although a drummer I do play guitar in my spare time, Hence the Gibson Epiphone next to me!
I can create a similar sound using a normal guitar slide...
If I but the guitar to Rhythm and remove all distortion, resulting in a clean sound and put the slide accross all the strings, strum and slide to fret 6, and continue it will sound really wrong, add distortion, turn down bass on amp, add reverb and do it again :thumb:

When going from one string to another try to get the stroke in the direction of the string. So if the string you're going onto is below the one you're playing then move downwards in a downstroke. If it's above move upwards in an upstroke. Really lame advice I know, but it works.

He hasn't been active since you guys started replying...and, to be quite honest with you, you are wrong in places.
No-one likes them? That's news to me. Metallica still headline some of the biggest festivals worldwide, and their albums sell millions on release. They're huge, basically...saying no-one likes them is completely incorrect....as for having good reasons for not liking them, what would you count as a good reason? People might not like Hetfield's voice, thrash metal in general (their older stuff), Kirk Hammett's soloing style...I've seen those reasons given for why people don't like Metallica, and I fail to see why any of them are invalid.
I didnt mean no one likes them I just meant they lost a lot of their original fans. Yes they are still popular. But most of the people who hate them hate them because they heard someone say it on MTV or something. Yes people don't like their newer stuff or even their older stuff but I think that the whole sellout thing has gotten old. Or they hate them because they went "mainstream" which I dont think is right. I think the only reason they went mainstream was because they are good, doesnt make them sellouts. If you dont like their music fine im cool with that, its just whenever someone finds out I like them they give me this ten minute talk that Ive heard a thousand times, like they've been listening to them for along time which half of them ever really heard them. I think its stupid people have to follow the "in" crowd...

No, they're not overrated. They have succeeded many things that many metal bands haven't. They have one of the largest fan bases of metal bands, they have sold huge amounts of records compared to other metal bands, some of their albums are rated at top charts at one of the best metal albums, same with some of their songs, etc...
Every band has fanboys. The reason metallica has more than most bands is because they are good. Fanboys wouldn't be as obessed with them if their music sucked.
I mean if Maiden sold 20 million copies in one album, whether it is good or not, they would be called soldouts, pop, crap, etc... People just can't stand seeing a metal band succeed into music industry and have a large fan base.

People call them sellouts because they changed to a more commercial style of metal, not purely because they sold lots of albums.

Music is subjective. I'm sure Britney Spears has her legions of fans that go around thinking she's the most amazing person alive. Aswell as Good Charlotte, Blink 182 etc etc. I'm guessing you don't think that? Same goes for Metallica. How many albums have they sold? I forget the total it says at the start of SKOM. I think Coroner should have sold millions of albums, cause they're amazing, but sadly they aren't well enough known.
Metallica fans can say what they want. The Black Album WAS a drastic change from ...And Justice For All, which got them more fans. Fanboys are fine, but you have to be able to deal with negative critisism without resorting to petty insults. I think Kirk Hammett sucked on Load and Re-Load, but that's my opinion. Perhaps what's why they don't let him solo anymore, I don't know.
You say it like Maiden don't sell a lot of album. Most of their albums go near the top of the charts on release. They never drastically altered their style, so I doubt you'd get anyone calling them sell outs. Well, perhaps the metal purists cause Bruce cut his hair, but that's just daft.
PepsiMetal
05-26-2005, 01:13 AM
No, selling out means changing music style to something else for the main purpose of earning more money. There are so many other different reasons a band can change. Bands can change because they're tired of their old music and want to move on to something new. Metallica has sold about 90 million albums I believe. Iron Maiden has also sold 50 million + (That's the best I could find) which is still not as close to metallica considering maiden has made more albums than metallica. I like many other bands, but still do not claim them to be nowhere as best bands. The only bands that I think are one of the best are metallica, maiden, and black sabbath. Yes, it's my opinion just like everyone else's. Nothing special. Just trying to say that what metallica has done is not easy to accomplish and many metal bands couldn't do it even if they tried. Excluding the top 2 of course.

The changes haven't really been favourable in my opinion, but it has gathered them a lot more fans. I don't say they sold out. If they wanna change their music it's up to them. My key point is not everyone has to like it, plus you're obviously gonna get people saying they sold out when James says things like "We'll never make a music video".
Fine, he was young and stuff and I don't really care that they made countless music videos after he said it. Sadly there will be many Metallihaters aswell as many, many fanboys. Kinda balances itself out in an odd kind of way.

Hah, that's the main reason I question their change.
I'd like to see what other people think about it too.

Yeah Dyers eve is kind of tough, but it's not that hard.
As a drummer, I can play the intro to Dyers eve on guitar, I think the ''And Justice for all'' intro was pretty tricky, not difficult, it was just a pain in the *** to get around!
Mama said took be a week or so also
For all Metallica fans! The link below is a lecture about selling out!! I think its worth reading, It brought tears to my eyes!!!
Link 1 (http://www.allmetallica.com/columns.php?id=42)
This is probably going to be incredibly sexist-sounding, but I still am surprised when I come across a girl, or a woman, who is into heavy metal music. And I don't just mean those girls who know of Metallica's post-1991 music, with the odd Megadeth song - I mean girls who know their metal, from No Life 'til Leather to Napalm Death, from Master of Puppets to Mayhem's Pure ****ing Armageddon.
I'll admit, it's bad - when my girlfriend showed me her extensive Metallica and Megadeth collection, when she told me she was into Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath, I was surprised (pleasantly, of course). Growing up in the Persian Gulf, heavy metal is still very much a sub-culture, and people were surprised that me, with my clean-cut, professional image, listened to metal from Load to Emperor. Hell, I get that in the United States, too. My fellow columnist Adam has already spoken on metal stereotypes, so let me steal that idea and run with it.
Women and metal, heaven and hell?

Rock music, and in particular heavy metal, has always been thought of as a man's domain. Maybe it's all the testosterone, the aggression, that has made a female metalhead a rare commodity. It's not easy to imagine a girl mixing it up in the pit when Slayer take the stage and blast "Angel of Death". If you caught the VH1 special "When Metallica Ruled The World", you'd have noted Lars Ulrich mentioning that they started to see more girls at their concerts after the Black Album came out, than before. Maybe this makes sense, a song like "Nothing Else Matters" is a tad more accessible than, say, "No Remorse". And in the mindset of girls being into the emotional, lovey, ballady stuff, it's very easy to comprehend Metallica being a band with a rising female audience if they (the band) show a softer, gentler side.

You just want to hate Metallica because of how they succeeded and your favorite band didn't make it!! Metallica has prepared the way for a lot of successful bands right now that if not for Metallica, they won't have inspiration and desire.
Many have tried to copy their music and figure out their fomula for success, but none has come even close.
Metallica is the best band of the new era, next to ACDC, Iron Maiden and Led Zep,
Wake up Metallica Haters and smell the coffee! Thius band will KICK YOUR ***!!!
Let me tell you something about sell-out. In life, there is evolution - and that is a normal process. It's a universal truth that something evolves from here to there. Even you haters evolve in the course of you mealsy lives, from your wants, likes, needs, desire, etc...
Metallica evolved and you can't handle it!! They create a different, more melodic music, make videos and you call them a sell out. Learn to adapt to the current issue and sorroundings so you will be able to survive. Making a video is not being a sell-out. So what if James contradicted himself. But that's the nature of the beast and business. What is important is they still make good music and still KICKS YOUR ***!!!!!
Metallica Rules!!
Wow, that was quite an outburst. We can handle it though, what with this being the Metallica thread and all.

Refl...*you're.
But seriously...you're making broad, sweeping generlisations about why people dislike Metallica. You say people that jump on the "It's cool to hate bandwagon" are bad but I'd say you're just as bad for saying that that's the reason that most people hate 'Tallica.
Alot of people grew up with early Metallica - Early Metallica being no radio play, videos, etc... - so when Metallica turn around a make a video to those fans the band sold out.
Admitedly, yeah. Alot of people dislike Metallica because they don't like the direction that they changed musically. But also alot of people hate them becuase they think that the music they've made, from beginning to present, is utter shite.

The only thing they did that was selling out was making videos and making St. Anger sololess. Just because they did those things doesn't mean that as a whole they are sellouts.

Do it. Then i can record the rhythm part. Someone can record the bass. Then some1 the solo. Then some1 the vocals. And we will have our own little Metallica tribute song. I think MXican had this idea a while back, and maybe have each Official thread do one and have people vote on the best. It would be fun wouldnt it.

Alot of Kirk Style solos are pretty solid lol, Try the first solo from Master of Puppets, thats pretty simple, the rest are not simple though lol.... And you say no solos from S.t Anger...
The good news is S.t Anger has no solos, also, even if your drummer doesn't have double bass you can still modify the bass drum beats slightly instead of

Cool thanks. It's just, back in 2004, there was a lot of talk about Metallica returning to studio in January 2005, but now that months have passed since then, and I was wondering what the word on the street was in recent times.
I was joking about the rhythm guitarist by the way, the only song I ever bothered to learn by Metallica was Orion, oh sexy Rhythm it is.

Quoted from metal head 617
Well in that case we have our final lineup!
Bass - Metal_Head_617
Lead Guitars - R. Blythe
Drums - Sliptallica
Rhythm Guitars/ Vocals - Chu
:thumb:
Well I don't think that Chu is going to do guitars anymore, but I think that R.Blythe is going to do both rhythm and lead.
Out of the first four albums, what is everybodys favorite opener?
Hit The Lights, Fight Fire With Fire, Battery, Blackened?
I'm stuck between Battery and Fight Fire With Fire.

Bah, starting the internet Metallica band up again (not that it got started in the first place...)? And I see I've been ousted from bass? Boo sucks.
Well, if you want to do some and share some duties of it with me metal_head? Not necessarily share duties on one song, that's just silly.
If you're going to do it, I'd suggest have the drummer record at the same tempo as the CD. Sometimes the guitar or bass cue things in songs, not drums, so that could be a problem (such as the intro for Seek and Destroy). Also, one person needs to have all of the tracks, so that they can mix them. A big consideration is what program is being used to record all of the tracks.

Form your own Metallica cover band on here. I'm sure there are other people on here who want to do the same. We can have a contest to see who is better.

Because that would be fun, eh? Its a bass solo, not a Metallica song. Not quite the same degree of accomplishment. And maybe I would if I had enough leads to hook my pedals up to my computer.
Is not being in a situation to record a lot 'not in a situation to record at all'?

No, its like once a month. But once we get into the summer I can probably do more.
What song do you plan on doing first?
I'd love to do vocals, but have never tried a Metallica song, I don't really have very good recording equiptment (Microphone + Computer :/) so it could be hard for me to get a recording.
That said, I'd still love to do Metallica vocals, I don't know what song/s though.
I think I'd like to do something from Kill 'em All, maybe Jump In The Fire.

4. Chu records vocals

Yes, they're the most accurate, but only the ones that are correct. You get people who rate it wrong because it doesn't match the tabbook, tabs that are off and there's not a full collection of albums or bands.

Chu, do you know if you can put everything together and mix it? You are the last person to record, so just see if you can do it when you are done singing.
Sliptallica, how are those drums coming?

If you're using a recording program capable of Multi-tracking it shouldn't be too hard to mix them.

If the Iron Maiden thread can't get a good enough vocalist, they can do Big Orra, and not all of Joey's stuff is to hard. There should be a song for every thread to do that they can get together.
