Mustaine is a good guitarist, but Friedman was/is better than him. Maybe not now that Friedman is in j-pop and not metal anymore, but back when Friedman was in metal he was the better guitarist.

I think he is. He hasn't got his reputation as a great guitarist just because he was in Metallica, you know.
No no, Friedman > Mustaine. Don't get me wrong, Mustaine's great but Friedman is better. It's a shame he went out so early in the polls.

Mustaines not even better than Friedman though.
Kirk isn't better than hetfield either.
Megadeth solos aren't always shredding, gocaps. Even their fast ones aren't really shred compared to say, Yngwie, or in thrash terms, Forbidden.
not all of them, but i don't really like the way mustaine solos

Actually he's a very capable songwriter. I have two of his solo albums and one of them could fit into speed/thrash metal.
I guess I just keep thinking of Mustaines voice and Friedman's style and I can't see them working. I know he can write good songs, but 80's style thrash I think would be weird.

It worked brilliantly on Rust In Peace.
Oh, I know that, it's just I can't imagine Friedman writing the entire songs, not just doing the solos. RIP is in my top 3 albums ever.

Like I said to you before. Actually hear more than 3 Megadeth songs before you make a judgement on daves solo capabilities. This is what pisses me off about this thread, half of you have no clue what you're talking about, you just defend Metallica all the time.
Dave isn't in the polls anymore, he got voted out. Plus he's there for his songwriting and Guitaring. You don't agree, then go have a cry.

Jason Becker. My favourite guitarist.
i have been playing guitar for about 5 months and have decided to learn my first proper (more complex) solo. Im learning the unforgiven and for a change im enjoying it and sticking with it. After i have mastered this what are other solos about the same level as this (i.e not really hard, but not simple either)

NEW TOPIC: Bass guitar on the Justice album. Do you think it was recorded?
I personally don't think it's recorded, it's simply not there.
And I know that SOMEBODY is going to act like he's all smart and be like "Turn on the bass function on your CD player and there's bass!" because you're a fool. Bass is the lower end of anything, from the snare drum to the bass drum to the guitars to the vocals. Bass guitar is a guitar that specifically brings out this range. Bass and bass guitar are NOT one and the same. I'm talking about BASS GUITAR, not the low end of your voice.

I think that Lars' drumming isn't that mysterious or wonderful etc. I think he's just an average drummer with the ability to make normal beats sound good. He's a lot better song writer than he's a drummer, if you ask me. But still I like his attitude.

Lars does the job competenly, but IMO a better drummer could've made their songs much more interesting.

Yeah, true that. I've also noticed that in a lot of the demos and other stuff before Kill 'Em All. He seemingly can't keep a beat at all at times, which funnily enough Ron McGovney said.
He's a lot better on MOP though.

I feel maybe his drumming isn't the best, but I'll say it again, not every band can be made up of the best members. And no single band is! However, Metallica has 4 very good members, each of which make it Metallica. Without Lars, and his business sense, Metallica wouldn't be so rich probably or in the public eye possibly. Also, look at how many writing credits he gets, and then think 'woah, none of these kickarse Metallica songs would exist/sound the same without Lars...'
I also think many people get into drumming through him and he's more than competent!

Even though i think that James actually holds the beat more then Lars cause of his control on guitar, I think Lars call most of the shots and Metallica woudn't be where it is now, i'm not sure whether that would be a good or bad thing.........

I think it's called Temptation, I might be wrong, but that's what I'm guessing.
EDIT: to sackman - I got it too, but I think it's weak. Nothing is on par with what you'd expect from any Metallica show. Lars skips a few beats, and the guitars sound dull. I believe its from Load/Reload era, because theyre playing in E flat.

Didn't they only perform it live on the "Madly in anger with the world" tour? or am I thinking of something else?

They've played it more than once.
They play in E flat a lot. on the MIAWTW tour, some of you may have noticed they played 2 steps down, in D, instead of 1, for their encore (at least at mine)
I actually like it. I think it sounds so much cooler when they tune down and play it. I've played One 4 steps down on my acoustic and it's incredible

Nope. Metallica definately had a different singer for a short time.
In the band "Metallica" James has always been the singer. He may have played guitar with a different singer in a small band in his early teens, but once "Metallica" was formed, James was the singer.
How come you ignore this everytime I ask :(
This is the first time I see you ask, so when I next see you, you'll find out.

Thats actually not ture, at one point James didnt think he was a good enough singing so they got a guy named Sammy Dijon, he rehearsed with them for about three weeks and never played a show...then James went back to singing.

He is dumb because he doesn't know anything there is to know about metallica?
People like you are why I hate this thread :)
Well in that case you should probably hate yourself...here a direct guote from Ron McGonvey that you might find interesting:
"At the time it was just Dave playing guitar and James was just singing. It got to the point where James had said that he didn't think he was too good of a singer and he only wanted to play rhythm guitar. So we found this singer named Sammy Dijon who was in a local band called Ruthless - he rehearsed with us for about three weeks but we never played a show with him. They told Sammy it wasn't working out and James went back to singing again."

I checked my book and I see you're right. I take my hat off to you.
After practising unsuccessfully for three weeks with a singer called Sammy Dijon, borrowed from a local band called Ruthless, Metallica decided that for the time being James would indeed continue to sing but that Dave would handle all the guitar parts.

He didn't put anyone down, he just hates it when people say someone is "dumb" for no real reason.
