^^^I know that all too well.......................

but really, saint anger is old news, who wants to hear it. but that addicted to chaos comment gave me an Idea:
someone take the dead horse that is St. anger, and make a cover song of one of the tracks and we will all have anal sex with it. (or just say it sucks)

Farbio
03-18-2004, 02:32 PM
I know I may be one of the few but I really enjoy St. Anger. I have heard alot about the production concerning the quality of the drum sound, guitar sound and overall feel. But I think this album is still a worth-while listen. As for the other albums Metallica my favorites include of course their self-entitled master-piece.

When playing FFWF do they skip the intro. you know the melody thingy.
I would like to see To live is to die played live also. It would be so nice...

They play the intro, but really cool and half-fast and its so great because you're waiting for the main bit and its great and I've run out of adjectives...

My analyzation:

Fight Fire with Fire < Battery
Ride the Lightning < Master of Puppets
For Whom the Bell Tolls > The Thing That Should Not Be
Fade to Black > Sanitarium
Trapped Under Ice < Disposable Heroes
Escape < Leper Messiah
Creeping Death > Orion
Call of Ktulu > Damage Inc.

Ok, so it was hard to choose between each song... and i didn't try to make both of the cds equal on purpose but...there you go.

^^ Ktulu has its charms, esp the symphony version, but i have to say i like orion best. My fav is actually to live is to die but technically its not an instrumental, but i still recognise that orion is one of the metallicas best musical achievements, interplay of melodic and heavy is just beautiful.

Anyway on a completely different note ive found myself listening to a few songs off st anger lately, invisible kid and unnamed feeling. Structural problems aside i can actually appreciate what they were going for on these, particularly invisible kid, i really like the tone of the baritone jaymz uses, and the subtle little delay on kirks too. If you listen to it through headphones you can really hear all the little quirks in the guitarwork, if only the lyrics werent so cheesy, it may have worked :(.

That song was 90% written by Cliff and they haven't played it since his funeral.

What's everyones opinion of Load and Reload; what's your fave songs / solos, what do you think of the guitar and drum work, Hetfields voice ? etc

I personaly like both; if im not in the mood for some thrashy stuff Load and Reload are perfect to chill to, the slow tempo on most songs is good for just sitting and playing along to. I like Hetfields voice - he shows more of a range and more emotion on these two albums, finally i think the drums sound a bit more technical and more well suited to the songs, there were some quality riffs on the albums and some neat little interplay between instruments ?

they should start using some old guitar riffs too.
Reusing lyrics is okay because they can be used in a different context, or be altered, as long as you don't take a whole verse or chorus and repeat it.
But in all honesty who wants to hear the same riffs used over and over?

Wouldn't that be scary if sometime in the far future, every single combination of notes had been used....oooh.

I just got Ride The Lightning on Saturday (my 7th Metallica album).....and why the hell did I only just buy this album now?! It is my new favourite Metallica CD, I like all the songs on it and even the lyrics are good (it just seems weird seeing good lyrics from Hetfield after St Anger ;) ).

I've been learning to play Battery on the bass (thanks to the new issue of Total Guitar) and have just about got it. Just some of those galloping riffs in the chorus catch me out.
Plus I'm learning Orion, Master Of Puppets, and the rest of Anesthesia alongside that.

What are everyone else's favourite Metallica songs to play (on any instrument)? I'm sure that's been asked before in this thread....but what do you expect from 94 pages!?

I like Unforgiven 2, but not as much as the original Unforgiven. I preferred the kind of sad sound of that, and Hetfield's vocals sound a lot more....I don't know, sincere maybe. They're both good songs, but the first one is way superior in my opinion.

thrashfanatic2010

Escape is awesome IMO. It's a song about rebelling against what everyone else wants you to do and just doing what you want to do.

Out for my own, out to be free
One with my mind, they just can't see

Members of the Swedish METALLICA forum Metallica.nu have joined forces in launching a project that they hope will result in a stone being erected in the memory of former bass player of METALLICA, Cliff Burton, who died in a bus accident just outside Ljungby, Sweden in 1986.

"Everyone that we have spoken to [is] positive to this project and wants to support us as much as they can," reads a post on the project's web site. "For example Aftonbladet (the leading newspaper in Sweden). "After some research that we have done we've heard that this project has been 'up on the carpet' before, but for some reason have not come to a conclusion."

check out the site here http://www.metallica.nu/cliff/

Cliff. Him, Lemmy, and Geddy Lee changed the way people think about bass. Also, it's widely regarded by Jaymz/Lars/Kirk that Cliff really brought a very "musical" elemnt to the band and taught them much about classical music and composition. without this knowlege, Metallica would be just another ****ty thrash band, and not the GREATEST ****ING BAND IN THE WORLD!!!! :D

Godd thing. Personaly i prefer him of Jason ( stupid goblin features ), he seems alot better to me and has that kind of attitude that give Metallica a great stage image and presence. I think in terms of writing he's gonna try and take them back towards what they were; he's into old school music - punk/hardcore/thrash, so it'll be interesting seeing what he'll do for them.

Good news hearing about them *writing* new suff already though. :)

Hmm hard one, Hammett is alot better than he shows in their songs but the same goes for Hetfield. If you've got the black album dvd like me then you'll hear Hetfields demo solo for Enter sandman, shows off a bit of skill. I cant see Hetfield with his big hands and arms pulling off some huge shred solos though - just wouldnt look right. So i think Hammett is a better guitarist because he's good at lead and rhythm, but Hetfield can actually write and sing ;)

Although Ktulu is absolutely genious, I like Orion more. Ktulu has better riffs, but I like each of Orion's three solos more than Ktulu's. I like Orion more because it's more progressive. Ktulu's atmosphere stays the same (until the fantastic, almost triumphant, ending), while Orion changes throughout the song. But it's still a hard choice because Ktulu has one of my favorite riffs of all time (the one around 3:30).

But the atmosphere in Ktulu is what makes it so great.

UnknowN Doodl3

Ktulu and Orion are both great instrumentals. That said, I prefer orion's riffs
( especially the one where there is A5, E5, C5 powerchords with open E mutes in between the notes)but I prefer ktulu's solo. Superbeer mentioned something about atmosphere. Atmosphere is what makes those songs great. Its what makes all songs by metallica great.

There's been some contreversy in this thread about including to live is to die as an instrumental. Why shouldn't it? As good as Ktulu and Orion are, in my opinion TLITD takes the title.

if you call a speech singing then yeah to live is to die has singing

Its not singing - its a few of Cliff's words said as a tribute to him - they're quiet and short anyway

hm.. what's the worst song off the first four metallica cd's?

Escape. It sounds so cheesy and dated

the worst song i'd say seek and destroy, it gets really annoying after a while

Can someone tell me what song has the video where metallica are playing on a sort of swinging platform thing and theres an old lady humming the tune?

I'm pretty sure its a Load/ReLoad song.

EDIT: Memory Remains

I think Seek & Destroy is one of their worst songs. It gets repititive, the riff is boring, the chorus is horrid, and the sound quality (as all on Kill Em All anyway) sucks.

Metallica related topic:
Can anyone explain to me the reason that Metallica play The Ecstasy of Gold (from the Good, the Bad and the Ugly) before some of their concerts and why it's on S&M? (besides from the fact its a great piece)

I think that Ktulu is their best instrumental. I wish i can be so creative and make crazy riffs that are like that in a song.
