speaking of bass solos, cliffs solos in cliff em all are pretty cool.
Cliff was the one to start the trend of Metallica's bass solos. Without him we wouldn't have had the memorable "Pulling Teeth",now would we? Suprised no-one else has quoted on that on yet!

If i remember correctly i heard loads of rumours that they were going to do something like the Black album a while ago, then a little album came out called S.t Anger, I think the truth is, No-One, appart from Tallica and a few producers know a thing, its all what people think, Not what has been officially said.
I do not think the new album will be anything like other albums to be honest, i think it will be quite a relaxed album, with loads of misterious tracks, kinda like Temptation that can be heard on S.K.O.M
(Has that Jaymez hetfield addy on MSN, Not came online as of yet though..)

hey this is a qestion for anyone and everyone, what do you think the band would have been like if cliff burton was still alive and dave mustaine was still in the group?
hmmm...good question there.
one thing's for sure...we wouldn't have megadeth...
kill em all would be pretty much exactly the same...
RTL would also be similar but we probably wouldn't have Escape. The solos would be more reminiscent of what we know as Megadeth solos (eg. rtl)
MoP would have some differences. the songs with hammett credited on them would probably be very different or wouldn't exist, and probably songs that we don't know would be on there.
AJFA would not have Blackened :upset: because that's newsteds riff. to live is to die would be much more extravagent, too i think. and the production would have been much better, bass wise, because they treated newsted like s**t sometimes and left him out.
The black album may or may not have been produced by Bob Rock and there would be no enter sandman (kirk's song). as this was really the pilot of the black album it would be completely different...similar to the 80s albums.
Load and Reload probably would not have emerged.
They probably would have stuck with what they're doing now like slayer but i don't think they'd be as popular as they really are and i don't even know if they'd still be together. i reckon if they'd kept mustaine and cliff hadn't been killed (RIP) they would have sold about 15 million albums in total now compared to about 92 million, because of the black album. AND THERE'S NO WAY CLIFF WOULD HAVE QUIT - HE KNEW BETTER!!! :thumb:

it was good that Dave was boooted cause now we have 2 great bands...everything would have been better with cliff...way better basslines and he wouldn't accept the crap they are putting out lately. I have great faith in future records though.

Do you think that Metallica in 1982 should have picked Gary Holt instead of Kirk Hammett from Exodus?

ANOTHER LITTLE KNOWN FACT
James recorded both guitar parts and bass on the track hit the lights.
theres alot i dont know about james. i never knew he did the solos.
metalcritter666

james did the N.E.M solo and the MoP 1st solo...and he plays the 3rd phrase of the seek and destroy solo live occasionally.
james has a much better tone than kirk, don't you agree?
what distortion does he use?

he writes a lot of the fast solos too (any guitar solo with the song not credited by hammett or mustaine is jaymz' work)...but most people think he can't play them because kirk always plays em. but jaymz is just as good as kirk.

exactly! i mean that album has some **** good riffs..the idea of each song just didnt' get far enough. I mean you can see the great change from the original work that they showed on SKOM...those songs were terrible and though time and patience they became a lot better, but not good enough yet. that album has great potential they just stopped too quickly; no solos and bob rock on bass didn't help much.

THE BAD THINGS ABOUT ST. ANGER ARE:
repetitive riffs
james voice
no solos
confusing lyrics
but after all the riffs are cool and make 70 minutes of music with the budget that other band uses for 45 minutes of music.

I think one of the main reasons st anger came out the way it did was because of all the drama the band was going though trying to write it..Jason leaving, James fixing his addiction, james and lars's ego's going at it..the therapist, to much crap going on to fully concentrate on the music. that's all been fixed now...i think the new album will be much better than this last one.

does anyone really think rock affected metallica,i mean every metallica interview that i saw after the one video, metallica's attitude were different.
metallica will never get rid of rock
I don't have a problem with Rock, as a musician, I actually thought the basslines to St. Anger were kinda cool, he's not as bad as people say, I don't think those people have actually listenned to him. They just think "Oh Bob Rock, he's a producer he can't play music!" if they took into account all the band's he produces for, like RHCP one of the better bassists in rock, in my opinion, he's obviously going to learn a bit...
I have a problem with Rock as a producer, I don't like any of the albums he's produced, except St. Anger, which he kinda wrote, but got Metallica's name on it

they totally should though. bob is a great producer, and he made metallica about a trillion dollars better off, but the music went downhill. everyone knows that. if they rehired rasmussen for the next album the music would be reminiscent of the 80s. good music. and thats what counts.

o lordy, so much needless posting. i hate it when people deliberatly try to post to get some sort of unpraised record posts or something. the quality of the posts decreases dramatically (observe for yourself) and it becomes a pain in the *** to read the 20 pages the metallica thread has advanced.
but on topic
1) since this is the hot topic, i thought i'd let you know that jameshetfield@hotmail.com is NOT james hetfield because his email would be more along the lines of jameshetfield@metallica.com. the selling emails on ebay is crap because no artist wants his official email in hotmail.
2) if cliff was still in metallica, all that would be different is that there would be better basslines. songs and their variety would remain the same (cliff is not pure metal, he wanted to experiment also)
thats all i feel like posting.

i love this part i can't manage to play it very smoothly, is there any methods to it or does anyone have some tips on that? (ride the lightning- fade to black, around 6:10 onwards)

03-28-2005, 09:37 AM
I'm sorry. Where is all this "JAMES WRITES EVERY SOLO" comming from. James writes the slow solos. The ones he is credited with writing are ones like the first solo in MOP or a solo in orion. James said himself he can't solo that well. The reason most people think hetfield writes them is because hammet barely gets writing credits. This is probably because coming in and writing a little solo and shredding for 30 secconds does not count as "writing the song" and so he doesn't get writing credits. i suppose you have to actually write the "song" part to get credits. But hammet writes those solos. Can you imagine hetfield even dreaming of playing one's solo. Amazing rhytm player but come on
Metallica Rules
03-28-2005, 09:42 AM
James may or may not be able to play a master solo. But at least he is able to sing and play power riffs the same time without losing his concentration.

If that was directed at my last post then my message came across wrong. I think james is an amazing player. To be able to play that fast and that solidly and sing at the same time is quite hard. Definitely and understated guitarist for sure. Are metallica bask in the studio now or is that just me?
ok to answer a few questions
YES METALLICA IS IN STUDIOS
JAMES DOES NOT WRITE EVERY SOLO
he wrote Nothing Else Matters and several little solos. All those incredible solos you hear like in Fade to Black are all Hammett. How could you think Hammett didn't write the solos? Go to 15:18 on disc 2 (Mexico City) of Live Sh*t track 5.

I know what you mean, this happened earlier on in the thread, a bunch of people started saying james wrote all the solos, It happens every now and again lol. HE DID NOT
Cheers for the studio answer though, thanks.

Yeah, james dont write master solos.. but well the least he did was he wrote an awesome nothing else matters solo. It's all full of emotions, and purely just Nothing Else Matters. During the S&M concert, he did another improvised solo, so much better, so incredible.
Then again, he is also good at writting other catchy riffs.. and not to mention about the lyrics...

I'm not sure how were meant to know that. But in an IDEAL world I would say 8 nuggets of pure thrash gold

nah. the most likely thing is an early 90s black album type thing but with the obligitory E flat tuning. they've listened to the fans and the last thing theyll do is a "re-anger".
looking at all the rumours thats my conclusion.

And now can someone answer me question?

Not quite on the same train of thought. But does anyone here wish they would release a new straight (no fancy stuff) live Dvd with a bunch of their old stuff. Like a minimalized Live; **** (i.e one disc) Basically that kinda thing but with the better modern day sound quality. Plus a chance to see rob. Actually summit like the St. anger dvd would be amazing (But obviously NOT playing St. anger songs)

no. it would have to be a long one spanning their career, st. anger songs are awesome live because they put guitar solos in them.

Does anyone know what the tuning is going to be for the new album?

Why do you wanna know that? I mean, personally i dont care about tuning. Exodus downtuned for new stuff and it turned out killer

James can no longer sing in the key of E, they have to move it down to E flat. Some songs sound better in E flat (puppetz) but some sound horrible (seek and destroy)

ironic, considering he took singing lessons in 1990.

Different people have different ranges, so there's no point in playing with instruments tuned to E when your singers voice is most comfortable in Eb.

it's very simple really and any good musician should know this.
if jaymz was singing as if the song was in E, but in actuality is was in E flat, it would sound out of key.
also, voices often deepen over time, and jaymz finds it more comfortable to sing in a lower pitch now.
