metallica is good except for lars i don't think anyone could be less creative with a drum kit than him. i almost feel as tired as he does when i listen to his drumming. and recently... what the hell is St Anger? screw that! metallica just turned into a crappy korn... and korn is something i find in my poop quite often!

New Metallica = Sucks

Oh by the way my fav Metallica song is For Whom the Bell Tolls

No mate, you don't come in here and call Lars uncreative and get away with it!
Lars is a great drummer, in my opinion, and one of the fathers of Metallica. He is a mediocre drummer with a few things going for him. If he was **** they would have cut him years ago, except that he is one of the fathers of the band, as they did to Mustaine. Lars isn't as creative as the next man. He is better than some people give him credit for, and worse than others give him credit for. He doesn't play exuberant drum fills at unecessary times, or indeed at all, or fancy licks when they're not needed. He knows how to play, man . . . . alot better than most drummers out there today, though clearly I am lying. Are you better than him? No I didn't think so(though I didn't even give you time to answer, or have any proof), so lay off him. You may love your mainstream crap everyone else here loves Metallica, so if you wanna talk here don't bag one of the fathers of Metallica. . . . .

 Jesus, I laughed so hard after reading that.
And by the way, Mustaine is a ****ing amazing guitarist, they cut him because he had a drug problem, not because he was lacking any technical skill, and by the way, we've all pretty much agreed that Lars is one of the suckiest drummers around.

Oh no doubt, don't get me wrong, I can't imagine ANY drummer drumming on The Thing That Should Not Be, or many other Metallica songs with as much power as Lars.
I still don't rate him highly as a drummer really though, if you put a piece of music in front of him and a few more famous drummers, I don't think he'd come out on top.

yea sure but as i say, lars is more than tallicas drummer. he helps make songs in some way or another... composition and some lyrics. but most of all he is the founder, and he created much of the ingenious style of music in the early albums

No, Metallica stole material from Mustaine, who simply reused the material that was rightfully his own in Megadeth songs.

I don't think so man. Knowing Metallica they'd change it a little bit, but for the most part it would be the same... just better.
-Better recording conditions
-Fine Tuned Musicianship (yes even lars, if you play the same songs long enough you have to be good at them)
-Better Producing (that kind of depends on the producer too)
-Instruments, i'm not really sure what they used in the KEA recording, but i'm sure their instruments are better now...

I just feel like he could have made the songs better... The feel to the music could have been heavier had he actually known what to do with his drums. But then again... that's my opinion... I personally like Led Zeppelin's drummer... THAT guy knows drums!

SHHHHH don't tell anyone

I have just ran across about 11 different versions of "Junglessence" the bass solo by Robert Trujillo. I have the solos in Dallas,Indianapolis,Qubec, San Diego...etc

With all due respect to Rob a couple of the solo's where great but I think he may have nervous or a bit tired on some of them. I think his strength is more playing with a band and not soloing. I have heard some of Newteds solo's and they were much better in terms of structure. Rob sounded as if he was losing his concentration during some of these solos making them sound real sporadic. Newsted of course probablly has more experience playing solo's than Rob.

He(Rob) can definately defeat me in soloing on his worst day!! I was kind of disappointed when he did not do one in Columbus last year, but he kicked a** anyway.
I imagine when you play 200+ shows it can be difficult to sound 100% every night.

Perhaps his(Rob) solo ability will be stronger the next time out

i put gain up all the way and i put up tone to 10/10, sounds amazing on my guitar, but ive been playing like all lamb of god recently. Drop D sounds so much better with the gain up all the way. I hate reverb so i never put it on unless its like a song that needs it.

When i play things like ratm i put my distortion on like 5/10 and for hendrix or pink floyd it gets turned to like 3/10. I dont use a pedal i just use my amp straight up cause i love the sound.

i cant seem to get my bass, treble, mid to sound right all the time, any suggestions on that?

Joe
03-23-2005, 09:42 PM
i go 8 or 9/10 for metallica. for things like zeppelin ill bring it down to 5 or 6 and for other things like pink floyd i do around 2.

i've got a great clean tone on my amp, so sometimes i use my pedal (which i love, metal zone by boss) but also my amps got great distortion

no offense man but i ****in hate the sound of that pedal. its so scratchy sounding and i think its just bad. I like the full and powerful sound over that sound.

i only put my double kick on when i need it,other wise its off,i hate double kick, its cheating,i only have it on like 20% of the time, other than thaqt its single and that would answer if i have 1 or 2 bass drums

double kiking isnt cheating as long as you play it well. theres nothing worse than dble kiking then it isnt needed. i have a iron cobra double kick, if your going to buy one dont waste money on a cheap one it will make it harder to learn, just get a half decent one

I couldn't agree with you more, a cheap one is, as i say cheap, but it will be a matter of weeks before your trying to sell it so you can get a better one lol

p.s, i am losing the poll to steerpike??? lol, His jokes are classic, you saw them in the musical jokes thread?

I think after St. Anger came out, Metallica hopefully realized that this isnt the kind of music that their die hard fans want them playing. They want the good old metal from the 80s, not the modern age crap rock from the 90s.

Thor
03-24-2005, 09:43 AM
Yeah, they were never really one to follow the crowd, at least back in the 80s. They were actually controversial back then.

hey yall just joined the site, saw the metallica thread and knew this was the place to be. but ya about what you said, all metallicans out there want another black album or mop (and personally i want another rtl) but after all metallicas been through, with hetfield in rehab and other stuff (if youve seen some kind of monster you know what i mean) do you guys really think they still got what it takes to come up with another legendary album? cause from the sound of st. anger, theyre losing their touch. im not saying that st. anger sucked, but for a band as awesome as metallica, its nowhere near as good talentwise and lyricwise as some of their other albums.

wow great first post noob :thumb:

and i think it is very possible. i think the bass is what changed them. did anyone else noticed that when they changed bassists the music changed ( i know bob rock too, but we'll see). In SKOM, they were talking about how much rob is like cliff and i'm really hoping this will lead to a classic metallica album like KEA, RTL, MOP.

i'd be perfectly happy with an AJFA or a Black Album. i don't know how other people think, but i really like those albums. it's not the classic metallica, but they're chock full of excellent songs

Josh
03-24-2005, 04:10 PM
hopefully it will lead towards the older style of metallica, but not exactly the same as the classic albums (MOP, ...AJFA, RTL), as another album like that wouldnt live up to the old ones. and remember, metallica are quite a bit older than when they wrote those classic albums, they've been through a lot - but they have more experiences to influence their writing now, so just wait and see what they come out with. are they in the studio at the moment?

ya i see what you guys are saying, and i definetely want another classic metallica album or black and ya ajfa was pretty good too. but dont you guys think that over the years metallica's been slowly going from long, insane, crazy solo songs to shorter, less crazy solos, less talent songs (plus hetfields voice pitch has gone from high in kea to low in st.). i mean, you got kea to start, which is an insane album (ie whiplash) and hell you cant understand half the stuff they say but the guitar is awesome. then you got mop, rtl which kept the awesomeness alive, and have songs that are like 10 minutes long. but then as you get to black, and finally st., the songs are way shorter, less guitar solos, (cough cough st. anger), and you dont get the crazy speed and guitar that you got in the classics.

so though we all want another classic, i just wonder why after all metallicas experience, there making their songs less and less like the old stuff that made them legends. dont get me wrong though, they still got it, i was at their T.O concert in october and they rocked the roof off the ACC, I JUST WANT ANOTHER *$@%@$ CLASSIC! and IMHO, i know there saying robs a lot like cliff, but i dont think itll change them that much cause the crazy drum and guitar parts were what made their old stuff so awesome, and not as much the bass parts.

yeah and thx 4 the compliment, im a diehard metallican

Joe
03-24-2005, 04:53 PM
where do you live?! I saw them in late october at the MCI Center in DC. what an incredible concert...

so yea about your other paragraph it's physically impossible for them to get the album to sound like they did in the 80's. admit it, they are getting old. kirk's fingers aren't going to be as fast as they were 20 years ago when ride the lightning and puppets came out. that's why i'd settle for another black album. i loved the black album. the solos aren't as insane but its still a great album
