Well considering Battery is Metallica's original work..
Yes it's Flotsam & Jetsam who do a good cover of Battery.

Actually, Flotsam & Jetsam did Damage, Inc. My bad, sorry.
Battery with Dave Lombardo on drums, Trujillo on bass and Rocky/Suicidal Tendancies on guitar.

Would have been handy for Rob when he got into Metallica. Anyway, if anyone wants to check Flotsam & Jetsam out, I'd recommend Doomsday For The Deceiver. It was the only album with Jason on and he did a whole lot of writing on it. Very bass driven album...anyway if you wanna be a cheapskate total and utter bastard, you can download the following...

Metalshock
Doomsday For The Deceiver
Hammerhead
Fade to Black (You heard me!)

It's not a cover though. Anyway, have fun.

i've recored a lot of metallica to my four track. one rythm guitar paned right, one left, and bass, lead guitar, and vocals in the middle--gives it a thick sound, at least for a four track. "fade" is one i've done recently. learning songs note for note and recoding them like that has helped me with techniqe, lead phrasing, and even theory. fun stuff.

i've been doing that on cakewalk on my computer. it's been difficult for me for not only timing reasons, but for playing. i just a few weeks ago got the books and the books say what james plays behind the solos. i want the AJFA book and Black Album book now

ok so i dont think i've told this yet. i got extremely bored today. so i looked on my computer and found some metallica music and some pictures online and made this huge slideshow/b-roll thing. it's actually pretty cool. the pictures suck, but the music and titles are cool. it was pretty fun making actually, i love working with film and editing

wrongnote85

one thing that i do for timing, because i don't have a metronome, is to take a bass, a pick, and palm mute a low e note for the count of the song the whole way through, trying to be as accurate as possible and counting the whole way. then i use that as my "psudeo-nome". that can help a lot with timing, especially when i recorded "last rites/loved to deth" by megadeth.

Well the albums after AJFA sound different to those before AJFA (AJFA itself seems to be in a little world of it's own), so it's only natural that people that like one style may not like the other. And then that's before you get into the whole "they sold out" angle many take.

It's not bullshit, though. Whether you like the black album, Load, Reload, etc, or not, when they were underground heroes in the mid-80s, what few magazine interviews they gave insisted that they would never change their sound, would never have an image, would never make a video, etc. And then Justice rolled around, and they made a video, and so appeared on TV, and then they changed their sound, etc..

Is it any wonder many early days fans felt somewhat disgruntled by this?

But the metallica that made those promises wasnt the same Metallica that made the Justic album. After Cliff's death isnt it possible that their ideas and opinions could change, along with their musical influences? I mean, a huge part of their lives was taken away in an instant, and they admitted that they never mourned the deat hproperly. They just continued. Things wernt going to stay the same were they?

shadow_stalker

I think Metallica should drop everything that they are doing and make Justice part 2, with the same kind of sound/playing style and kepp the songs progressing throughout.

Like Lars said about how From lightning to justice the songs got longer and longer more intracet and more progressive. The songs like that were better.

Lars also couldn't duplicate many of those songs live worth a **** (lack of skill++), which is one of the major reasons that the band decided to go in a simpler direction in the first place. There are way better bands than Metallica at that sort of progressive thing now anyway...Metallica couldn't hope to be as innovative as some of the stuff out now if they did try to make Justice Part II.

And do you remember what happened when Lars said they were going back to the Kill 'em All era? St.Anger came out.

I dont think making another album in the same style is the way to go. Metallica was always changing (the majority for the better), and that is the way it needs to stay. They need to be Metallica now. Not the Metallica of a past Decade.

I think St. Anger was actually closer to their thrash days then anything they've released for a while, I might even be inclined to say it's more thrash then Black Album.

I didn't miss Kirk's solos, because frankly, on their recent albums they sucked *** anyway, the production wasn't the best yeah, but I'm not gonna lose good music over that. The songs dragged on for a bit too long, yeah but I don't mind how long a song is, the vocals weren't great, but we'll never have 80's Hetfield again, so I'm happy we got this at least, the riffs were still kick *** and I enjoyed the drums aswell. Overall it was an awesome album, closer to their thrash, and definately deserves another listen, if not a remaster done with better production so the people who doubt it can see how good this album really is.

Did you know James wrote and played most of the solos on the latest albums (Load onwards)? I really do miss Kirks solo-ing. James solos are still brilliant (dont get me wrong), but Kirk is a great solo-ist and his abilities arnt being shown. There was nothing wrong with the production. They have been using the same production techniques since the Black album. St.Anger however, lacked the texture that was part of the polished metallica albums. If you listen carefully to albums such as Load, which at first seemed to be simple riffs, you'll hear that there are atleast 3 other melodies and counter melodies working with the main melody. There was no such thing in St.Anger, so the simple riffs, remained simple and boring. Metallica's overblown tone wasnt going to carry everything. I still do like St.Anger though. Its still a good album..I just feel it could have been better.

Chu
03-13-2005, 11:20 AM
It could have definately been better. But considering the circumstances St. Anger was written under, I mean Bob Rock had alot to do with the writing process.

By production, I mean the drum sound, which I can't stand, but I like the drums.
And the tuning of guitar, they should have kept it standard :(

I'm very happy Metallica released this, I enjoy it alot.
And even if I'm the only one, I'd say it was worth it by Metallica.

Alot of early Metallica stuff borrows heavily from the classical sound, so hearing their songs on classical instruments is interesting.

yes, you are right. classical is still really cool. it helps me with my writing and gives me a lot of ideas about phrasing and harmony parts.

Wasn't this because Cliff was heavily into classical?

Yes he was, and alot into the theoretic(sry) part too...

The solo for the Unforgiven on cello = sexay

Interesting fact is that Dave Lombardo worked with Apocalyptica on some stuff after he left/was kicked out of Slayer

He was the most musically advanced.

Its True,,, I know Cliff was always the one who got his own way with most of the music, and he did the first four albums.... and when he died alot of the material he wrote was used on the Black album also.... So really its when cliffs material stopped, the band went downhill... I love reload, and load, but many say the best albums are the first five

Hell Yea... Well if you think about it, The first 5 albums were written with Cliff as the bassist, Those albums are put into a main catagory of best...
Then you get the Load/Reload S.t Anger ect: with Bob Rock as the bassist, which most people class as the downhill albums,,,
So now they have Rob as the bassist, it would make sense to see another change.... Do we agree?? or is it just me??? lol
So, this change is either for better or worse.... Lets look at Robs history, if Rob gets a say in the new material being written, what type of music would you say the outcome may be??? Old school??

I read this article the other day in a magazine which I thought was way cool. I don't know if u guys have seen it before but i'll post it n e way.
It's titled " The Unforgiving! "

"So what did US interrogators do to Iraqi POW's to get information about the Weapons of Mass destruction? Tie them up and beat them? Keep them without sleep for days? fed them airline food? No, Worse! They played them Metallica's Enter Sandman again and again. They said ' These people haven't heard heavy metal music before. They can't take it. If you play it for 24 hours, your brain and body functions start to slide, your train of thought slows down and your will is broken. And thats when we go and talk to them'."

I guess when Kirk Said " fight crime with Metal " on the cunning stunts dvd, he wasn't kidding huh. :thumb:

I just found out that Rob Trujillo has one endorsed bass that is called the Gravity 4 Deluxe made by Fernandes.

He also has a signature bass build by Zon the MSRP is like $2595, has any one played or heard these basses??

Before any one says Post this in the bass forum I already did and no one there has played or heard one.

he always wrote on the instrumentals, and i know for a fact he wrote the begining master of puppets riff

I would assume he wrote all of the bass riffs..obviously. Though with Metallica most of the bass does tend to just back up the guitar.

Metallica started a whole awsome genre of music. Then they bent over, grabbed their ankles, and got phucked in the asss by the record company, then they make a documetary about themselves, and payed a guy 40,000g's a month to tell them how to talk to each other. Kirk hammett needs to go solo.

Well, with Cliff, that wasn't the case, Cliff often had bass was independant from guitar (Especially notable on Kill 'em All in my opinion).
But yeah, when Jason came online, I think they kinda did that.

Myself and another person on here read the same article, I now am not sure if it was a recent BassPlayer or Guitar world magazine. The article stated that Cliff was the most "musically advanced" member of Metallica and he did teach James some theory. I have the magazine in a box with my other 12,768 bass and guitar mags and I could dig it up......some people seem to have a hard time believing that....the article also mentions that Cliff was on his way to being a good guitar player according to Hammet....

Lars' sexual orientation does not matter
your post was mindless, unjustified flaming which is not tolerated

**** it... Everytime when some1 mentions Cliff Burton.. I would cry.. U guys prolly tink im some nuts... But to me, Cliff was the god of bassist... That guy is simply original Metallica (maybe if u dont understand me, what i meant was, this guy is just so metallica, his style his appearance and the way he plays it all suits the name Metallica ) .. And the more his basslines are so interesting.. It's simply another true masterpiece... I used to think bass is just nothing but when I saw the videos from Cliff 'Em All... Now i beg to differ... Simply unforgettable bassline... And what tragic way to lose a talent like this... R.I.P Cliff...

1: What Metallica song has the best lyrics?
2: What Metallica song has the best guitar tabs?

The best lyrics are down to the opinion of those judging them.
By best tabs I'm assuming you meant best parts, which is also down to opinion.

To make an interesting comback, which songs from first 5 albums you happen to skip frequently???
(first "5" albums because most of people here hate Load (one of my favs :upset: ))

Kill 'em All:

- Anesthesia
- Seek'n'Destroy (does it come to an end?!)

- Fade To Black (sick of it)

- Ktulu

Master Of Puppets:

1. I'd say the unforgiven. Whiskey in the jar has fun lyrics but imo they're not as deep and meaningful as unforgiven.

2. Blackened, seek and destroy, and maybe master of puppets come to my head with that question.

3. I dont know, but some song from cliff days probably.

4. Drum tabs would go to motorbreath probably. I like the intro.
