Why?

Quite a few.... Not on the albums i dont think lol, Just live... On live binge and purge he sings 98% of Seek and destroy.... It that a mistake near the intro, or were they meant to stop?
i also think he sings some other songs. he does a lot of back up vocals like on puppets.

Yeah... I think now that Jason has gone the pressure is on little Kirk to do backup vocals. I must say when St Anger was released, i think it got to number 3 in the charts over here and they played live on there, and he sounded really bad lol.... I wasn't happy all my scally friends kept chanting 'Flush it out, Flush it out'
They soon stopped when i told them they sounded just like him lol. In all fairness though Kirks voice has improved a lot recently.
It reminds me of years ago
I would go to a wedding and all these old women would pinch my cheeks and say awww you will be next!
They soon stopped that when i started saying it back to them at funerals!! lmao :naughty: :D

More than likely.. He was in Exodus at the time, and its obvious that he was a very tallented guitarist right from the start, he had probably saw Metallica playing a hundred times, maybe even gone to there house parties... I know the exodus manager of the time went to Metallicas parties...

Well this thought is my own, i could be entirely wrong, but i think Kirk helped with the making of Seek and Destroy... It seems very different to the other songs on the album, and it matches some of Kirks work in later albums..
Just my thought though...

LONG LIVE METALLICA! Yehea
As far as I know they didn't written The Four Horsemen while Dave was still in the band, they obviously had Mechanix, but I don't know if Lars and James had done their own rendition of it yet. This purely off my own assumption, so my facts could be way off.

Jason did lots of songs:
Seek and Destroy
Whiplash
Creeping Death
The God That Failed
Master of Puppets
those are some of the songs that he did either backup (Puppets and TGTF) or lead (Creeping after the interlude, Seek, Whiplash)
Jason does Seek and Destroy with a very alcohol induced Pantera.

I think the reason why he was playing with Echobrain was because Metallica was kind of on a long break and Jason wanted to do music 24/7......plus James neede some more time off for his problems and Jason was getting aggrivated and impatient..then James told him no side projects you are with Metallica and not Echobrain ..so Jason quit

I'm 100% sure Kirk wasn't in the band during KEA.
but you know how they auditioned rob? they played a few songs with him. maybe kirk already knew some of the songs just from being a fan
From Kirk's interview:
----------------------
The first time I ever saw James and Lars and Metallica was in 1983 at the Stone, which was a nightclub that used to be in San Fran. I was totally blown away by their originality and the ferocity of their sound and as well as the velocity of their sound they were the fastest band I had ever seen up to that point. I remember going up to the front of the stage and in between songs [original guitarist] Dave Mustaine was talking and I screamed out, "Sweet Savage!" which was a New Wave of British Heavy Metal band, and Dave heard me. He didn't look my way but said, "**** you!" into the mic. And it was really hilarious, 'cause if you fast forward to six months later, I remember sitting around with Lars listening to a tape of that very show 'cause he had it on cassette and I heard myself scream out while Dave was talking. I said to Lars, "Hey, that was me!" But I think the very first time I actually spoke to them was when my band Exodus opened up for them at this punk club in San Fran. After the show I went up to them and I was taken aback, 'cause as I was speaking to Lars he was undressing himself, and the next thing I know he was standing naked in front of me. I was just so blown away by his openness. Then I met James, I met Dave and then after that we went to a hotel on Lombard Street in San Fran. We hung out and drank and talked about heavy metal. When I ask them about it now they have absolutely no recollection of it.
I can very distinctly remember getting the phone call to come out to New York to audition for the band. Exodus' manager called me and said, "Hey man, Dave Mustaine is on his way out and Lars and James are interested in auditioning you." It was very peculiar, because prior to that I knew I had some sort of connection with the band, I had some sort of feeling before that I would be involved with Metallica in some way, but I didn't know it would be as a member. So when I got that call it made sense to me in a very strange way, like it was fulfilling a destiny.
I got picked up at the airport by my manager and [Metallica's bassist] Cliff Burton and we all crammed into this little truck and we drove out to Jamaica, Queens. We ended up going to the Music building which was converted into rehearsal spaces. You were not supposed to squat there, you were just supposed to go there and play and leave, but the guys were pretty much squatting there and it was winter and there was no glass on the windows and there was snow and really really chilly winds coming in. I looked around and these guys were sleeping on pieces of foam that were used to pack the amps on the U-Haul truck. James, Lars and I all kind of exchanged "hellos" and then we went into the rehearsal room and we started to play "Seek & Destroy." While we were playing Lars kept looking at James and James kept looking at Lars and I couldn't figure out what was going on. And we played some more songs and after we went out and got some 40-ouncers and started drinking and hanging out. And that continued for about a week, and they informed me that they had a gig at the end of the week at a place down in Dover, New Jersey, and I was totally freaked out. It seemed like I was in the band right off the bat, and I found myself playing a bunch of shows with them. They never formally told me I was in the band, and it didn't fully sink in until they said, "We are going into the recording studio, do you thi nk you can do it?" I was like, "Sure." We went to upstate New York and we began recording Kill 'Em All.
--------------------------------------------
About writing (not recording) the solos, I'm sure 90% of them were already composed by Dave. Except the middle solo in The Four Horsemen (by Kirk) and Hit The Lights (by Lloyd Grant and Hethfield).
The rest was Dave. Kirk did change them a little but Dave's ideas remained the same.
Anyone interested in early Metallica??? Ask btoto :thumb:

He didn't write the songs, but he played them.

I read in Guitar World magazine about how Cliff taught the rest of the band basic music theory...and it shows in their Cliff-era albums...their use of more exotic scales and stuff.

I didn't realise just how great Cliff was until I listened to The earlier stuff, Kill 'em all is especially strong with the bass and the riffs, Cliff wrote with James didn't he.

Lars also took lessons from Satriani's drummer...although I never noticed a difference afterward.
The whole band used to each share input on the songs.

was that Greg Bissonette. It's quite funny how world class players like Hammet and Ulrich were taking lessons when they were famous, Hammet took his lessons after Kill 'em all i believe and Ulrich after Ride The Lightning.

When did Cliff join I always though he was with them from the start. Did Cliff write on the other two he was on then?
I thought the only song on Kill 'em All Cliff didn't write was Hit The Lights :x

Yeah they had a bassist before cliff. I think his name was Ron McGovney. Why exactly did they get rid of him anyway? Just cause they liked Cliff better?
Yeah, he was good friends with James I think.

If lars had lessons from Joe Satrianis drummer, how come whenever him and james would have a drum off, james would win?
metal guitar III
03-11-2005, 04:46 PM
Ron McGoveney was James friend from school. James taught him to play bass, and Metallica needed a bassist so Lars was like "Why don't you join?" And he did. They played gigs and wrote songs with Ron, but then they discovered Cliff, and don't need to explain further really. Cliff>>>Ron

hey heres a really easy way to solve all of this. go look at the little booklit/ cdcover of the album ride the lightning ok? look at the credits for who wrote ride the lightning (the song) DAVE MUSTAINE! NOT KIRK! dave wrote the solo for lightning. thats probly in my top 5 solos of all time.
hope that helped
Dude, don't make me get even a little angry !
Never talk such garbage until you know for 100% !
To all those who always say that Dave wrote Ride The Lightning and When The Hell Freezes Over (original title for Ktulu) solos: Do some research before stating such crap ! (sorry for being rude)
Kirk composed both of those solos !
Prooves???
1. Dave co-wrote RTL. The part in the begining belongs to him. The rest is Metallica. If he did write the solo and finished that song before being kicked out, I doubt they would miss a chance to perform it.
Do you know when it was performed for the first time?
- SF, The Stone - (11/07/83)
Do you know when was Kirk's first gig with 'tallica?
- Dover, New Jersey April 16 1983. (Dave's last gig April 9)
Clear???
2. Dave wrote the intro to Ktulu (which everyone already heard in Hangar 18). This time it's a bit different. We can say that Dave had a huge role in this song because it's all based on that clean intro.
Ok, now about the solo: Do you know when they performed it for the first time? (and it wasn't even finished, it was a jam)
- Las Cruces, University Of New Mexico - (08/28/83)
Well, can you remember Kirk's first gig???
And finally, in booklet there are usually names of authors of music (of a certain song). The solo of a song doesn't give you a credit of a co-writer. That is why Kirk may not be there.
Smith and Murray wrote solos for The Trooper. But who's the author???
- Mr. Steve Harris :thumb:

Just my 5 cents. :upset:

I don't what to say... Didn't they put a "13 years or older" questionon this forum ? Why did you lie?..........
So here's my point if you didn't understand it (which you didn't):
I am tired of people (in general, not just you) using FTB, AJFA, KEA, MOP, RTL etc etc etc when they're too lazy to write Fade to Black ...And justice for All etc... You might not which one you're talking about... If metallica does a new track, Feel the Blood, or somthing like that...
2nd my opinion of a forum is that it should be like small talk... When you talk to you're friends or whatever you don't say TTTSNB... right?
I think using nicknames would be better... Like "nothing else" or "Sandman" etc... Like you speak it...

I find it slightly annoying that you feel you can post your thoughts on the matter in here, yet others can't.
If people want to abbreviate song names to save time, then they shall.
If any confusion arises, then the matter will be resolved as to which song the person is talking about.

No its not about what "real metallica fans appreciate" - look at the term "greatest hit", its a mark of commercial success; how well it hit the mainstream. Not how well it hit metallicas fans opinions.

oh yay, Elitism+
Because someone happens to like Enter Sandman more than any other Metallica song they are automatically disregarded and not considered a "true fan".
What ever happened to musical taste?
And yes, greatest hits is a term used to describe songs that have done very well comercially, so Enter Sandman is one of Metallic's greatest hits.
This is the reason why Greatest hits cds are so awful.

if it is, i was only trying to say that if you haven't heard the pre-black albums then you can't call yourself a true metallica fan. one of my favorite songs at the moment is the unforgiven, but im still a true fan because i've heard the previous albums and know that theres more stuff than the major popular cd

It stems from this post:
yeah but as metallica goes its really not good... just coz it was popular with the mass's doesnt put it into the greatest hits list just coz boppers like it. Its all about what real metallica fans appreciate...
oh ok.
so yea now i'm listening to some punk cd my bassist made me

He was saying he wanted to make himself a Metallica greatest hits, I don't think he's planning on selling his greatest hits album, so it has nothing to do with commercialism...
Just because your favourite song is from Black Album, you can definately still be a Metallica fan, hell you could be a Metallica fan if you only like ReLoad.
I just can't stand Enter Sandman, sorry for starting a flame war about it.

Not necessarily. Catchiness, rhythm and aggression all come into punk bands I like (not necessarily all at once). I don't really care about the message of much punk music.
By the Clash, or is it a cover?
sounds like its a cover, but it's terrible.
the cd's actually getting a little better. theres some nirvana on here and there are some songs with more than four chords :thumb:

Greatest hits is a term used to describe songs that have done well comerically, as in they have done well in the charts and sold very well.
A greatest hits cd is a cd compiled of songs that have been successful.
A best of cd would have the best songs by Metallica on it.
which include enter sandman, one, nothing else matters, master of puppets, fade to black, fuel, st anger, frantic, etc
For a second time this year, a San Antonio man who chanted the chorus to METALLICA's "No Remorse" after fatally shooting a man in the head in Corpus Christi and robbing him of $13 twenty years ago avoided the Texas death chamber when the U.S. Supreme Court stopped his scheduled execution the same day he was supposed to receive a lethal injection.
About 40 minutes after condemned inmate Troy Kunkle could have been put to death Thursday night (Nov. 18), Texas Department of Criminal Justice officials in Huntsville received word the high court had blocked the punishment, the Associated Press reports.
Kunkle was in a small holding cell next to the Texas death house when he received word.
"Ecstatic," Kunkle said when asked to describe his feeling. "Praise God."
"He seemed completely surprised," Michelle Lyons, a Texas prison spokeswoman said.
According to testimony at his capital murder trial, Kunkle was 18 when he fatally shot Stephen Horton, 31, then chanted: "Another day, another death, another sorrow, another breath" — the refrain from the METALLICA song "No Remorse" on an album called "Kill 'Em All". A pool of blood is depicted on the album cover.
"Well, to be honest with you, it was basically just a situation to where it was a juvenile mistake made with juvenile peer pressure," Kunkle, 38, told San Antonio television station KENS Wednesday from death row. "There's nothing about this to be proud of. Really, it's kind of a shame and an embarrassment."
Prosecutors also remembered him at one point playing an air guitar in the courtroom at his trial as lawyers discussed whether the METALLICA song could be admitted into evidence.

About all this "Greatest hits" talk i think you need to split it up... You could divide it into who their bassist were at that time so it's like:
Metallica Greatest Hits Vol 1 (The early years / Cliff Burton era) Kill 'em All to Master of Puppets
Metallica Greatest Hits Vol 2 (The fame / The boring pick bassist era :P) And justice for all to Reload
Metallica Greatest Hits Vol 2 ( ROBZILLA ) St. Anger to ?
Ofcourse you could divide it in other ways like Kill em all to Black album and the loads etc but it Metallica has so many different styles that you need to divide it into groupse ...

Actually, I believe Marty and Ellefson and Menza were all somewhat free in what they wrote and played. Although Dave did make them change certain things to fit what he was playing, IIRC Dave wrote all of his parts (obviously) and Marty wrote most of his parts. I'm probably wrong though. Time to go to the Megadeth thread again, me things.
Anyways. Rob is a beast. I can't wait to see what he does for the next album. I'd love his lines to be a lot louder, just as loud as 'Arry's in Maiden. That'd be awesomeness.
