Oh I don't think this topic has been discussed. What is your favorite riff? Not like the whole song, like a few seconds of guitar or bass or drums. My favorite would have to be the seconds and solo right after the main solo in Sanitarium

"You know a band is great, when they can play slow, and still blow you the **** away with talent."
Ok, unfortunately, i just registered, and don't have time to look through 638 pages of posts, but i will put my two cents in. Metallica - Greatest band, EVER. Who else do you know can make every generation go crazy for them? My grandmother, at 72 or so, listens to Metallica - Black Album, and loves it. I gave her a CD of a few hits, S&D, nothing else matters, master of puppets, sanitairum, etc..., haven't heard from her in about a week since then.
I think everyone's problem with St. Anger is that they used non-standard tuning. I haven't even tried playing any St. Anger songs, I'd much rather play standard tuning songs, because they just plain sound better. Sad But True, one full step down tuning, was a great song, and it's still a great song, with non-standard tuning, so maybe that's not everyone's problem. I heard Frantic in concert a few months ago, and I'll tell you, it ****cken rocked, and so did Sad But True, I personally don't mid the different tuning.
Now, for S&M, has anyone actually sat down, and listened to this CD all the way through? It's a collection of alot of Metallica's greatest songs, but with extra talent in the background. James - Best metal voice in music. Lars - One of the best drummers Iv'e heard. Kirk - I don't give a **** who their original guitarist was, he plays the solos live just as good as I heard on the CD. Rob - Yeah, he was recruited after a long time, but who cares? Would Metallica recruit a bassist that wasn't the best available. (The YES bassist is already taken unforunately.) And this dude can play, when I saw him in concert, he soloed with a distorted bass, and he was ****en jammin'.
Lastly.... how many bands try to imitate them? I realize that classic rock band to ever play set the stage for Metallica, and other 80's bands, but they just have such a unique sound. I was driving, and "The Hunter of Sorrow" came on. I'd never heard it, but I heard the first few notes, and I was like, METALLICA. Then I heard Jame's voice to confirm it. "Often imitated, never duplicated." How many new bands were at the T.V. Metallica Ultimate Tribute? They idolize this band. Even Linkin Park, Korn, and Blink182 were there, and they sound nothing like them, but their who they listen to when they were my age. (Yeah I'm only 15.) Godsmack, System of a Down, Tool, sound like Metallica, but not quite the same.
For the greatest songs Iv'e heard, I would have to say...
Enter Sandman (the song that got me into Metallica.)
Master of PUppets (the song i hated for a year, then liked it for some reason...)
One (no explanation needed, that last "Darkness, imprisoning me... part is just insane though.)
Ride the Lightning (the hardest solo Iv'e ever heard, even my guitar instructor was dumbfounded by it.)
Wherever I May Roam (this started me off with my guitar, I was only playing intro's until I heard this song.)
I'm also curious, how many people here have seen them live?
great post noob! and yes your exactly right about new bands
and my fav is fade to black
and i saw them live this last tour, it was amazing
ok, adios. yo veo un DVD de Metallica llama "Live Sh*T." Yo volvere en (awhile)

hatchedinalab89,
Obviously lars isn't one of the best drummers, although he has good stage presence. And of course kirk and james aren't the best guitarists nor metal vocalist, but hey, it's all subjective. I dont like when people say Jimi Hendrix is the best guitarist because to many people he's not, etc.

yea, you said lets get off lars, but one more thing about him.
@pepsi, the only other drummer that i can think of that's better is the rush drummer, surrounded 360 degrees in drums. If he isn't one of the best, then who is? maybe the best drummer isn't the one who can hit the snair the fastest, or make a drumrole out of a double bass pedal, (which lars is pretty good at by the way.), but maybe it's who can correspond with the music the best, and with For Whom The Bell Tolls, and the ending of all their live songs. With Lars just beating the **** out of his bass pedals, I'd have to say he's one of the best out there.
Btw, does anyone listen to System Of a Down? Theyre drummer sounds like he's playing live all the time for some reason, anyone noticed?

03-09-2005, 11:12 AM
the best drummers in my book are lars, gar samuleson from the first megadeth lineup, as well as nick menza. then neil perdt from rush and stuart copeland from the police. i know that's a far cry from metal, but the dude is ****ing killer! anyone agree?

Some one earlier was asking if Metallica recorded all thier instruments at the same time or record them seperately.
On St.Anger Bob Rock recorded the whole band playing together like in a large studio or garage. Bob said he did'nt want to use anything real fancy, just a raw stripped down sound. You notice on St. Anger you can hear some guitar feedback, fingers rubbing on the guitar strings, snare sounds like a tin can ..........that is why it sounds different than all thier other albums.
Normally they record all the instruments seperately

You notice on St. Anger you can hear some guitar feedback, fingers rubbing on the guitar strings, snare sounds like a tin can ..........that is why it sounds different than all thier other albums.
Normally they record all the instruments seperately

I heard alot of things that make that sound that aren't rimshots such as using two skins and strapping a piece of metal to the bottom of the drum to give it that hollow, metallic sound. but rimshots could be all it is. My friend said when he saw them in Sydney that the snare sounded like it always did.

im sure he could play lead if he really wanted to, he doesnt appear to be as quick as kirk but from the little teasers u see here and there, james can really let it rip when he wants, not to mention their riffs arent very easy to sing and play. but he doesnt seem to struggle at any point of any song - peace

I'm sure he could pull off a few solo's, but he doesn't. Why? who knows. Metallica aren't a band that share Lead duties like Slayer, Megadeth, Priest etc etc. Perhaps James isn't good at creating solos, cause I can't see any reason he doesn't do more.

Don't really need to be so hard on him.
It's obvious he hasn't heard much, if any Megadeth (And from that Marty Friedman), and I highly doubt he would have the fogiest idea who Jason Becker is.
You could instead, go about it in a different way and just recommend he listens to some Jason Becker or Marty Friedman (Maybe via Cacophony), and then listen to Kirk again and judge who has the speed.

I dont think Kirk gets the credit he really deserves. Sure he is over-rated to an extent, but i think thats mainly because of the fanboys only know of him because he's with Metallica. After i watch Live Sh*t B&P and he played that monsterous solo before he went into Little Wing, i gained a lot more respect from him.
Cooley is probably the fastest guitarist i have ever heard aside from Baitio, but i really cant stand stuff like that because there doesnt seem to be any real emotion in it. Its just kinda like "I can play THIS fast!...Oh yeah? I can play FASTER!"

I think Kirk is a great guitarist, he lights up the ****en stage during every song in concert. Btw, Lars, James, and Kirk can all write plenty good music, you don't last 20+ years as one of the best metal bands out there, to finally being the best band EVER (imo as i have expressed before...), without having 3/4 or all four members writing good music. Between James and Lars, I never even knew that James soloed in any song, thats new to me. I'd like to see a new thrash album come out from them, with musicianship like Black Album, but faster. Only now, how about both of them solo at the same time? I agree with you completely (no IMO, it's more than us). Kirk is an amazing guitarist. They all actually write great music. St. Anger didn't disappoint me because of the lyrics or the riffs, it's that Lars thought solos weren't trendy.
I'd like this album to be better than the Black Album. I want it to have fast songs with awesome lyrics and cool solos. I can't wait until it's released.
Metallica isn't retiring anytime soon, unless you've heard otherwise. They will probably go on tour in a year or two after the release of the new album.

Fans like it more than the Black Album.
Sort of like how fans love Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets.
IMO ...AJFA > MOP
what exactly is a "true fan standpoint"?
it was a bad choice of words. what i mean is a fan that doesn't only like the black album. a fan that knows that metallica has had better years (such as the cliff years). i think most "true fans" would believe that.
how about from my standpoint? it should be better than the black album.
i'm thinking it will be. they mentioned in SKOM how certain songs haven't been played like cliff since cliff and that rob made them sound better so i'm hoping because he makes "metallica sound better" (lars) that it will be better.

i agree. metallica was tight as hell during the cliff years. i've watched my copy of cliff em all about a million times and it never ceases to amaze me. they where very tight with jason on the justice and black tours, but when the whole alt metallica came around they lost it i think. i saw em last may and i think rob really did kick em in the *** because they played much better than they have over the last few years.

Hit the lights - 45 MB
Sanitarium - 70 MB
One - 105 MB
Something like that. :thumb:
i'm getting hit the lights now.
why does jason sing some of the songs on live ****?
Just watched the extended Mustaine interview, still too short.
But I liked it.
I wish Cliff was here....
However, I really do like St. Anger, I've been listenning to it massive amounts recently, probably my most listenned to album (Other then Train of Thought) for the past 2 weeks. It's my fav since ...AJFA for sure.

Still, not their best for sure, and I don't even like ..AJFA that much, but I prefer it over self-titled, Load and ReLoad without a doubt.

My favorite tallica album is AJFA as well. It hasn't changed in a while. When I started listening to metallica it was black album of course, but then I discovered AJFA, RTL, MOP and KEA.

is it me or does James sort of look like rammstein singer in the Hit The Lights video?

I know he could shredding wise, but as far the actual song goes (like you said), Satch owns. Hes much more creative and cover a much broader ground the malmsteem does. So in a sense Satch is a better guitar player, because he does more than scales at mach 9
http://s13.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3RQHGRID8P5SU2UJ0SH0XY5QQ2
listen to this solo...Gnahh from Is there Love in Space?
Yeah, as I said Satch is a better composer. But Yngwie can play like a motherfvcker. Too bad he always uses the same tricks. I improved a lot in my guitar playing after listening to Malmsteen.
I wish he put more effort into his solos. :upset:
Well, that's the problem with all virtuosos. Some time ago I bought G3 Denver DVD and apart from a few nice things it was a total disaster ! A whole hour of boringness and dissappointment. Joe playing the fricking blues scale up and down the fretboard, Steve riding his tremolo and producing those wierd "discovery channel documentary" sounds and Yngwie raping the minor scale to death ! :upset:
I did enjoy it a lot when they played and sang together in the end.
IMO ...AJFA > MOP
I'll second that. ...And Justice For All is an incredible album.

i agree wth him too AJFA>MOP
wow really you guys? AJFA is amazing but i'm going with MOP. Master of Puppets I think had better guitar solos and bass by far. AJFA had better drums. I also think i like Orion better than To live is to die (not an instrumental, but mostly)

I'm 99% sure that Kirk not James played the leads on KEA.
Didn't Kirk have to learn all the songs like a week before they recorded Kill 'em all? After they released Dave that is.

He did have to learn Dave's leads pretty quick, but I don't know exactly how long.

why does jason sing some of the songs on live ****?
Because, in live ****, it hadn't been a great length of time since Jason had joined, and as we all know, Jason had some pretty big shoes to fill.... I know that he was rejected quite a bit at first, and therefore, the more Musically tallented he appears the better the outcome, i also think Jaymez likes the opertunity to go have a beer lol :chug: :naughty:

I like his grunt in Sandman, one and creeping death. When he does them live of course. Me personally, i like Jason. I think he's talanted and he brought a good attitude to the band and had a dynamic stage presence.

IMO, anyone who denys Jason's stage presence, is a fool.

only because they knew all the songs before they were signed. they practiced for years and years before they got the deal and started recording. by then they got everthing down easily

Quite a few.... Not on the albums i dont think lol, Just live... On live binge and purge he sings 98% of Seek and destroy.... It that a mistake near the intro, or were they meant to stop?
They kinda just stop and all you hear is the bass drum with Jason shouting Eh! Eh! Eh! over the top of it lol...

Jason also sings on Whiplash, apparently James finds the lyrics cringeful.
