The guitar Jaymez uses with the choppers inc. logo on it had a great sound but my favourite would be the white E.S.P with EET FUK written on it, the Flying V with green flames from the Whiskey in the jar video is pretty cool also...

What is everyone's favorite guitar that Kirk and/or James uses? (to give this a point)
James - White esp explorer with the EET FUK in the corner, original gibson white flying v used in the early 80's
Kirk - Black Jackson V, and the custon ESP like the red and yellow one with the wierd skull on it

Well, they would have a different style with Mustaine. I think Mustaine made Kill 'Em All more of a thrash-metal cd and Ride the Lightning with Hammett was a more metal cd which I and apparently 90 million other people think
kirk would have been in another band cause he was already in one at the time he enterd metallica
True but Hammett and Hetfield are amazing. The duos they write are just unbelievable. They're not like crazy solos, but it's two completely different guitar parts that sound so perfect together. I even get non-Metallica fans to agree that they are technically amazing

kill 'em all was the 4th metallica album i heard (before was black, mop, and rtl) and i still like it the best. most bands release great songs on their albums, then they slowly become not so great... metallica was great until black album, where there were only a few great songs, then re/load.... which was pretty bad, then finally what me and my friends refer to as **** anger.
I like Kill 'Em All too, it's just not there absolute best. That's why I didn't say that's the other one i wanted to go through

I personally think Kill 'Em All is their worst album. Kirk is far from being at the top of his game (this was before he got lessons from...uh, Satriani? [I think]), plus James apparently is still learning how to sing. It's still a good album, but not my favorite.

(not that metallica doesn't have fanboys) but in the polling a little while ago for the best song didn't tool come in number two. NUMBER TWO?!?!?! how can it be possible that tool came in number two for the BEST song.
and they've beaten out so many good albums in these polls and it just sickens me that all those guys vote for is tool

MOP definately - it is a classic metal album.
I want to know who exactly has been voting for AJFA above
a) all other Metallica albums
b) all other albums in R&M
I'm not even going to vote in that poll...
And Justice for all... I must say myself i personally do not think it is Metallica's best album musically, i would say as far as instruments go, some of the material on there is very complex and difficult (From a drummers eyes) i also think that it is the complex drum structures that accually destroy the power of this album, just because it is played fast does not mean to say that it is better, just because its hard to play, does not mean it is any better either....
All the same it is still a great album, although i would say Ride the lightning definatly comes above ajfa although i prefer jayme'z vocals on the justice album...
Thats my opinion, what do you guys think???

i think ajfa is their best album.it has classic songs like one, harvester of sorrow(their best song),shortest straw, blackened, dyers eve,to live is to die.although i like cliff over jason and robert.most people dis on ajfa but its a great album.

yes i think it's a great album, i just don't think it's there best. they've produced better songs than the ones on ajfa. yes, i like most of the ones on ajfa, but i like the earlier songs better

I agree with the Cliff part there, i prefer him over jason and rob any day, and Harvester of sorrow would probably be my favourite song of the justice album also, with close competition from Blackened hehe...
On shortest straw, is that Larz doing backing vocals, or is it my ears... i have wondered that for years???

AJFA used to be my favourite, but then the production really started to get on my nerves to the extent that it actually detracts from the quality of the songs themselves. I find most of the tracks quite boring really.
For example, AJFA (the song) really drags, yet its great live - though sadly they don't play it very often.
The only songs on AJFA I actually actively like are One (The definitive Metallica song?), TLITD and Dyers Eve.
I know a lot of people feel the same way which is why I can't understand how that of all Metallica's albums made it into the final.

i like the riffs in ajfa, but your right. the song is about 3 mins too long.
the sad thing is is that Enter Sandman is the definitive Metallica song because it's the only song half of the Metallica "fans" have ever heard.
But besides that, I go with One or Master of Puppets

ok so they first metallica song i heard was enter sandman, but i didn't know it was metallica at the time. i found out it was metallica when my friend asked me to do the wah part in the intro and so he showed me everything and i found out it was metallica. so then i started playing enter sandman in another class and this other dude started playing fade to black so i downloaded fade to black and then bought RTL and it all went uphill from there...

I would probably not put nothing else matters in my top 5 or even top 10, but one song that i would put in my top 5 would be fade to black, it has its gentleness but it has triplets on snare and bass drum and heavy riffs that make it kick *** when it gets going. definatly a song with soul and emotion though... I believe it was written just after all Metallica's equipment was stolen from a lorry in boston!!! so that grey tama kit from the 'One' video has to be somewhere!!!!

The kit that was stolen was the same model as in the One video though not that exact one though, new equipment was ordered of course and everything got back on track, Lars chose to use the same kit yet again as he seems to like the double bass starclassic tama kits, hence the grey one in 'one' the silver glittery one in S&M and the Green glittery one in St Anger!!!

Lars' first Starclassic was the Silver Sparkle one...
And of course he uses the Blue Sparkle Starclassic one in conjunction with the Silver for recording.
His kit in Live **** Binge & Purge is a custom Tama Artstar II with Granstar II lugs...
:thumb:
AND, the kit Lars used during RTL was a chrome Imperialstar (which wasnt stolen I dont believe)...
He upgraded to the white custom Artstar II around MoP time and hung onto it up until the end of the Black Album tours (where he had acquired another one, possibly two)...
And the loss of equipment when recording RTL was not so easily fixable for James at least, who had lost a very rare and beloved Marshall amp.
He spent ages searching as much of Europe as he could for one and had to settle on a similar model that he found in Copenhagen (or somewhere of the sort).

Favorite song stuff....
I never really liked heavy metal music until one day I caught the video for Enter sandman on mtv (i think). I am seriously scared of falling and that video just locked the song in my head for a bit.
After hearing it a bit more I decided to listen to other albums. I didn't like any of the other albums up to that point but like Load & Reload. Hero of the day is another of my favorites.
I hadn't thought about playing any metallica until about 2 weeks ago I relistened to reload and decided Slither was something I liked and could handle.

My first response to you was going to be:
"Saying Metallica is getting better is closed minded because that is your opinion. Metallica was better in the 80s."
Then I realized how hypocritical that was.
Just realize that saying "they're getting better" is only by your standards. They are in fact "Metallica" not "Alternativica". I like those albums myself, but they don't really do Metallica they're justice.

No.
Drumming doesn't make a song sound totally different. If you add a simple or complex beat, the song's melody and such will still be the same. I think lars' playing fits metallica perfectly. It's nothing crazy as in dragonforce, but it's alot more complex than pop punk bands.

Yes, but just because you like older tallica more than newer doesn't mean it's best of metallica, or best music on the planet for that matter. I mean I can find a person that likes newer tallica more than older, so his opinion would be the opposite of yours. Nobody's wrong here, there is just no best music. It's all opinions and what you like or not.

Of course it's more complicated than pop punk. I never said it had to be anything crazy like Dragonforce, I just think it would be cool if he added some more complicated stuff. The drumming obviously wouldn't change the melody, it would just add another element to the song, which could be cool.

I agree, kind of. The Drumming in the first 3 albums is amazingly simplistic, especially in Kill 'Em All. It matters little though as it keeps the Rhythm together and sounds alright. It would be nice if he used complicated stuff now and again, but is he capable?

He probably could be, I was just wondering what it would be like if he had added complex drumming though, not necessarly if he could.

Oh I know, but I'm considering stuff like Dyers Eve which he couldn't actually play. I'm not trying to put him down as a Drummer, even though I don't think he's very good...but anyway, yeah I think it would be interesting if he did try something complex in his Drumming, but not something different! Don't want the St. Anger garbage can Drumming again.

Yeah, I heard they had to record Dyer's Eve in pieces because Lars couldn't do it for the whole song. I don't think he's great either, but he does keep the beat. I still think it would be cool if he did and was capable of doing some cool complex stuff.

lars has no accentation on his hats,he has never had a lesson, hes not very good at double bass(besides those stupid little flams with his feet before he hits the snare),he never incorperates double bass into his beats, overall he is about a 6 on a scale of 1-10,but hey, hes better than me!

Back to Metallica.
How did you get into Metallica in the first place?
I was into punk, and I needed something more challenging to play. Metallica seemed like the way to go, because I had heard some of it through my friends. I went out and bought RTL, and just went further into metal from there.

That's a great song, even though I don't listen to it much. One of the things off the Black Album that I didn't mind as much. For the most part I don't mind the CD, but I just don't like it nearly as much as their previous stuff.

I'm going to change the topic forgive me for this but I have a question. I find I'm a good guitar player. Most of my solo's are Kirk Hammett solo's I just need a good warm up and I can play just like him. I only have one trouble thought regarding the essence of thrash metal. When I palm mute and I strike low e really fast it sounds good but MetallicA sounds so much better (faster). How do they do it is it both James and Kirk's speed put together, or is it just James, maybe is it something I need to practice? Please any tips on this?
metal_milita

A lot of the great clean guitar riffs that james writes are when he is alone and just with himself. Its when he involves everyone else in one big jam session where riffs like "st.anger" are born.
edit: Clean riffs/solo's for One were written by him in 85~ in a truck while he was on break at some cement site/building site.

Uptil Black Album, James played all the riffs and Kirk just recorded solo's. Then it was Bob rocks turn to step up and let Kirk do rythm to get the live feel of Metallica, and to let him contribute to the music writing. they've gone downhill since. Kirk is too jazzy and classical to be able to come up with riffs like Creeping Death, RTL etc that are Metallica's classics.
As for the sound, James uses ESP'S live that are famous for palm mutes quality (right?) and they always have the ever so useful sound editor for albums to really make the palm muted E sound out.

A lot of it has to do with the pickups and amps. Turn it way up, and it will probably sound better. :)
Also, James does a lot of downpicking, and that has a different sound than alternate picking.

Ya, down picking has a much better sound to it IMO than alternate picking on the low strings. But for the spider chord riff from MOP, I have no clue how Jamez can pull it off so easily while doing all his crazy performance faces. I have to concentrate like a bitch to just get it while alternate picking.

Yeah, no kidding. I can alternate pick it just fine, but there is no way I can downpick it that well. It would take so much practice for me to get it like that.

Ya well theoretically, if what Mustaine is true about how he made it up. otherwise its credited to James.
I don't exactly know what a spider chord is, and I'm sure its not even a chord but just a left hand "moving" pattern. I guess if you do it really fast, it looks like a spider is crawling..... Thats my theory, because I asked once and no one really responded back.

If you're not a crazy *** mother****er like the chosenone, then try something like

They aren't that hard. They just take some practice to get down well. I'm not crazy, my friend who nailed Creeping Death in a half an hour is crazy. I have to try to keep up with him becaues I'm in his band. That helps make me a lot better.

My favorite would either be Ride the Lightning or Master of puppets.
I really like St. Anger, even though the majority of Metallica fans hate it.
Also, Rob never played on St. anger, if you meant something is lacking on St. Anger because of the bass.
