The double bass drum
called that just to confuse the world. Double kick just doesn't have the same ring to it

I play the drums - had to wait till I got a double pedal before learning most Metallica stuff. Last song learned: Fuel ('tis fairly easy)
I also play the guitar - though I'm an absolute beginner. I can do a few intros (One, Sanitarium, Nothing Else Matters, The Unforgiven, Sandman) but after the first few bars I fail miserably.

I just got onto this thread. And i find it hard to believe that its been goin since sometime in 2003. I am new here so hi everyone. My sis's ex introduced me to Metallica a while ago and since then i have bought all albums and most live dvds. I listened to this band non stop for about a year, and thney made me start playin guitar. There is no real point to this thread just to mnotify if any of you care.

i haven't really thought about it. my friend bought me the concert from this past year so i'll listen to it again and then listen to some dvd's. i haven't heard too many live, only live sh*t, MIAWTW, and S&M

Could someone please tell me why Lars Ulrich seems to get flamed by metal critics in regards to his drumming skill? I'm not a drummer and don't claim to know anything about the drums so if someone who does know a thing or two about the drums knows what i'm talking about, could you please fill me in? Greatly appreciated
Burdcheese
02-06-2005, 03:29 PM
As a drummer I can safely say that there is nothing wrong with Lars.
Criticism is based upon two things:
a) Because a lot of fanboys think he's the best evar[sic], they accuse him of being unable to keep time. This is also based around the fact that he is far from the most technically profficient drummer in the world (DT's Mike Portnoy for one, could wipe the floor with him), yet adoring fans make him out to be
b) Because Lars has been known to do/say some stupid things, this gets transferred onto his musical skills. Just because the man may be something of an *** doesn't stop him from being a competent musician.
The most valid criticism is that his newer stuff isn't as complicated as his older work and thus some accuse him of laziness (courtesy of SFK - as he was known back when he said it)
Leper
02-06-2005, 03:35 PM
Ya i've noticed over the years that Lars's personality leaves something to be desired, that's why i wanted to make it perfectly clear that i was referring to his skill as a drummer. But you're right, his personality probably does rub off on people's opinion or his skill.
In fact when i saw them in concert, he and Kirk nearly got in a heated arguement right on stage! Of course none of it was mic'd but i could tell Lars was upset about something

I dunno what it was, I can't remember what song they had just finished, but it looked like Lars wanted to wind it up with a big, heavy finalee, but kirk didn't seem to be on the same page..anyways lars ended up getting up from his drums and kinda got in Kirk's face about it, but Kirk just seemed to brush him off haha.

I'm no drummer, but if you compare Lars to somebody like Dave Lombardo, Nick Menza, hell, even Joey Jordison, he's not as skilled as them...it took him around 7 years to finally figure out that you can use the C/R cymbals more than 5 times a song. As well as the fact that he doesn't do the double kick live anymore, from the concert boots I've gotten.
I find it sad that Jordison played Enter Sandman better than Lars does. (Download on 6/6)

It's not really that popular. The only reason it sold to much was probably because Metallica were already pretty big before that album was released. Plus the fact Enter Sandman was most likely released as a single before the album came out. I'm sure at the time most people thought that was a great song.
Plus! it's more accessable Metal than the previous 4 albums.

Not nearly as successful. They would have some fans, but a lot of their following came from people who liked the KeA through AJFA.
That's what I think anyways...

I did too. I don't understand what the problem with the black album was. People say that they haven't heard any similarities between MOP, RTL, etc and Black.
How about distortion, wah pedal, hard rock, great solos, cool riffs, great lyrics, and great songs???

I thought it was okay, but I go back to my point that I would rather listen to their other stuff, or a different band. Just my opinion though.

yes he does. there was an article about the top 10 guitarists with the worst tone and #3 was Kirk Hammett. Now that i really think about it, i can't remember a live solo without the wah pedal. It's almost as though Kirk uses his wah, because he wants to make his solos sound cooler, as if they're not good enough for him. I could have done just as good of a doodle as he did when I saw him live, because he just did repeating patterns, and stomped on his wah pedel the whole time.

Yea really. when i saw them last october i noticed that too. when i bought live sh*t he did this doodle with very little wah pedal. maybe he really does have arthritis. he was a really fast and unbelievable guitarist back in the late 80s early 90s. it's 15 years later now and he's been playing incredibly fast guitar for probably 30 years, so i think he really might have arthritis.

His solo's off Live **** are incredible. I've never known Kirk to shred because it doesn't fit Metallica (save some songs) but that was very skillfull. More of what we should hear during concerts, not random power chords.

Cliff 'Em All is mainly bootleg videos of Cliff taped by Fans because Metallica didn't usually tape their concerts. And Kirk does play it different everytime, thats what makes it kickass even more. His best version IMO is the 1985 version, or the Live shi*t seattle version (it uses wah wah, but very skillfully)

Well I don't really give much credit to shredders like Yngwie, except I give tons of credit to Hammett. None of his solos in the songs are shredding except solos like Sanitarium. Kirk really has variation and different notes and tones and that's why I think he's one of the best guitarists ever. Not just because of speed, but because of his writing and variation and speed and creativity

Cliff 'em All is a bunch of different concerts and footage of Cliff and the band at the time. The Wah on the outro solo to Fade to Black ruins it live, IMO. It is a great solo on the recorded version, without the un-needed wah.

Thats the great thing about Kirk, he CAN shred and rip notes like Michael Angelo or Petrucci, but he doesn't because hes not an attention whore and he knows in the end, its just a bunch of wanking off on the guitar. The solo sounds terrible of Live **** San Diego if you hear it without the video, because thats what shredding is. Its just showing off and showing your fast skill, but I can't ever imagine listening to it.
ps. Sanitarium doesn't use shredding. Its a patterned alternative picking thats relativley easy, and it sounds good so it doesn't count. Something like Dyers Eve could be called shredding.

Of course Kirk can play it like the original, but it adds so much more exitment and diversity to their concerts if they play it differently each time. If you think of it, almost every song they play is different live than recording (save some like Enter Sandman), because staying the same all the time just doesn't suit Metallica. Throw in a bunch of randomness and the crowds go insane. What would be the point of giong to their concerts for 20 years if they play the same thing again and again.

Therefore all the bands that play what they did on the record live, are boring? I would still go to their shows if they played the same thing live as they did on the recording. I don't go to a concert to hear something I've never heard before, I go to hear an awesome band play songs off of their CD's that I think are cool.

I like the fact he uses some variation on some solos from the recording, just not when he changes it completely.
Or like when he does the same solo live every time. Like on Nothing Else Matters he uses the same solo every single time. It's different than from the album, but it's always the same live

Yeah, Kirk was singing backing vocals when I saw them and he wasn't very good. Someone told me that Rob normally sings backing vocals but he had a sore throat or something the day I saw them.

on the topic of back vocals... i like Jasons backing vocals the best
i like how Jason does the vocals on the last chorus of Creeping death everytime/sometimes when they play it on concert
So let it be written
So let it be done
I'm sent here by the chosen one
So let it be written
So let it be done
To kill the first born pharaoh son
I'm creeping death(James does the creeping death)

I also like how Jason does all of the screaming during the first two verses. It makes it sound really cool.

It's probably around 30 dollars. I got Cunning Stunts for around that. And I think I lost Disc II somehow...that makes me sad. Am I Evil? now permanently lost in the abyss that is my basement...

Metallica keeps their act pretty much standard when they play live. The stage explodes and breaks apart right before One, the stage goes pitch black and then you hear the opening intro of Nothing Else Matters, and a lone spot light shines on James. Not that it isn't awesome, because it's the best act I've ever seen. But it is somewhat predictable. I was very surprised though when I saw them last May and they did Dyer's Eve live. That was so f-ing awesome, and I've never seen it performed live or on any DVD releases either. I felt special, warm and tingly inside whilst headbanging lol

Lol uh yeah Live **** blows everything out of the water. I liked the little drum-off between James and Lars, then Kirk comes out and they do a little cover of Mistreated, pretty sweet. And the cover of Little Wing was awesome too. I liked the Seattle disc the best, from the ...And Justice tour. If I could go back in time to do one thing, I wouldn't prevent wars, or introduce modern technologies to help improve current times, I wouldn't even go back in time to meet Jesus, I would go to a Metallica concert from that tour. Hell yeah!
Ok yeah I would probably opt to meet Jesus above everything else lol, but you know...

Beginner question:
First time I have tried to work on Metallica and palm muting.
Can someone explain how exactly to get palm muting correct?
I am close but can't quite get the sound right with Slither.

There are threads that cover this in the begginer section of the guitar forum. Please take this there.

Are you from Winnipeg? Because when they came to Winnipeg they played Dyers Eve, and i know it's pretty rare for them to play it in concert...

Try the guitar forum for guitar related questions, but just lay your hand over the strings. You might have to move it back and forth to find a position where you get the correct sound.

you might want to try as close as to the bridge as you can, depending on which kind of guitar you have. explorers and flying v's work the best (wonder why hetfield always used them?)

How well you can palm mute doesn't depend on the shape of the guitar.
When I went to see Metallica live it was almost annoying how many different guitars Kirk had. They were all pretty cool though. :)

tr00, shape plays no part in Palm muting. Having a bridge though helps guide you as to where you should rest your palm. You gotta admit though, Kirk's Mummy guitar is a beaut.

Yeah, that was one of my favorites. My favorite was probably his Ouija (sp) graphic one though. I was intent on buying one, but I didn't have the money. Now I chose a different guitar, and I'm glad I didn't have it at the time. Still a sweet guitar though.

The guy said explorers work best for palm muting not because of shape. It's because it has no floyd rose and you can put your hand on the bridge in whatever position you want.

The guitar. Watch the segment on Kirks guitars on Cunning Stunts, the tech tells you about it.

That would make more sense. Since its a smooth transition from the strings to the top of most tremolos, your hand'll slide off and you cant really get a solid spot as to where you can ground your hand. With a bridge though, you can always count on the bridge to dig into your palm and assure you you're doing the mustin right. :thumb:

The guitar Jaymez uses with the choppers inc. logo on it had a great sound but my favourite would be the white E.S.P with EET FUK written on it, the Flying V with green flames from the Whiskey in the jar video is pretty cool also...
