My favorite album is a tie between ...And Justice For All and Master of Puppets because they have the more songs that I like than any other albums. I'm leaning a little bit towards Justice because I LOVE all the songs on that album and on Master I don't like Leper Messiah.

Also, what's this I hear about the first American flag?

I don't really like Messiah either. But I think Master of Puppets has more songs that I like than ...And Justice for All.

Personally, my favorite is Ride the Lightning because I like every song on it

who is better? joe satriani or kirk hammett? i know that joe gave 4(?) lessons to kirk back in 1983(?) and that since then kirk's solos have become progressively uncomplicated. but i'm willing to bet he's better now then 20 years ago. please discuss.

Well, I just went to watch the One video on LauchCast at Yahoo.com and it skipped alot because I have 56k connection, but here's what I got out of it. All those clips where from a movie right? Well what was wrong with that one dude with the cloth over his face? I read somewhere that this video got alot of contraversy because it had disturbing footage but it wasn't disturbing to me, I guess it would have been if the audio kept up with the video, lol.

The song and video are both based on a book(I forget what it is) about the attrocities of war. The clips in the vid are taken from the film of the book.

The "cloth" over the guy's face is a primitive ventilator. He was injured when stepping on a landmoine and lost the use of all of his limbs and is being kept alive in hospital, despite his wishes to die.

I love the one video. The clips are from a film called Johhny Got A Gun as far as I know (at least, I think its Johnny). Its not creepy, its just... It sends a chill down my spine no matter how many times I see it, just for the ending... The way he can't communicate that he wants to die, and that he's just a hunk of meat with a pulse basically. Its deep. It seems to me Metallica did what they set out to, with their 'anti-video', and I dig it. Its certainly not a commercial, sell out video, like a lot of fans speculated.

But considering Metallica themselves said on a few occaisons they would never release a video clip (Least, that's what I think they said, or something similar?) most people would consider that selling out, or at least, trying to attract a bigger market, a market which is just for the money...

Even though I like Kill 'Em All- ...AJFA as far as sound pleasing goes, I can't help but respect most songs in the Black- St.Anger album because it introduced me to Metallica. I wish I was a true fan from the start, but the truth is I wasn't even born when they came around. I can admit that I got caught to Metallica when they went "mainstream" so I'm not a true true fan since the beginning, but hey, as far as fans go, that sort of stuff doens't make sense to me.

Yea, me too. I was born right around when Justice came out.

Wow, the whole "cliff alive=better metallica" has been done before. And for those who went into momentary stages of coma during it, it is probably NOT true that Metallica would not have changed. Evidence (sort of) is an interview in which Cliff stated the band would be experimenting with different styles of music. The lyrics and songs would be a whole lot meaningful maybe, but the music would be different.
Besides, I liked Jason Newstead. To me, he was their best performer after 80's James. But I wasn't around to appreciate the awsomeness of Cliff and understand it, so I can't really talk too in-depth about it.

Obviously I'm not talking skill wise because Newstead can barley play fast and I've heard great things about Rob. I'm talking performance wise.

slaytallica250
01-23-2005, 12:10 AM
Rob is freaking awesome. Seen him twice, and his energy level reminds me of Tom Araya, except it's not just head banging. He's running all over the stage, spinning in circles, playing on his back while kicking, crazy stuff like that. And he's one hell of a bass player. Anybody that can play Battery without a pick deserves a lot of respect.

As far as the whole "Cliff=better Metallica" thing goes, here's my take on it. Like everyone else said, he's only 1 guy. I've always liked Metallica no matter what. I like their old stuff more, but I like their new stuff in the sense that it's still a unique sound. I might just be too big of a Metallica fan, but I can hear 2 notes of the newer stuff and tell what it is right away. I guess my main point is that Metallica is good no matter who's playing the 4 string thing.

And yes, Jason Newstead was **** amazing, and very much so under appreciated by Metallica.
I personally believe they should have given him some more freedom and allowed him to write more stuff, I think maybe that's why I dislike recent Metallica (I guess since Load more then the ...AJFA or Self-Titled). But meh, they did what they did, maybe Rob will write some new material. :)

I'm disappointed in post-Black album Metallica. They still put on a ****ing amazing show. And Balck Album and all the ones before are utterly amazing. But really...no solos..what's Kirk trying to do? Save his fingers? The riffs..bad. Drums - good, but the sound wasn't. And alternate tunings? My favorite thing about bands like Metallica and Slayer is that they could play the heaviest **** in the world without having to resort to downtuning their low E.

Either way, they've given rise to a surprising amount of new talented bands, which makes me happy. Prime example: Trivium. Look 'em up, the solos give Kirk a run for his money.

Even though I like Reload, I agree that KEA through Black beats it, but while we're on the subject: Low Man's Lyric, love it, hate it, why? I love it. It's one of the only songs that 'tallica made with all clean guitars, and it's full of emotion that you don't usually see from James.

I agree...Nothing Else Matters, even though the solo is distorted, ownz Low Man's Lyric and Mama Said (sounds too country for me) any day. Given it's all Metallica and it's all good, I think Nothing Else Matters is best.

Sidenote: I don't include Fade to Black on the list because it's mixed the whole way through. NEM is only distorted for the solo.

I think the problem with metallicas more recent albums including the black albums is that the guitar is so clean. James hetfields voice is best heard when theres an army of heavy, distorted guitars behind it. Especially nothing else matters where the guitars struggles to stand up against james' deep growl and lars' thumping drums, cept in the solo(BTW which is way too short, and doesnt have james singing)

what do you guys think the easiest to play metallica solo is? (besides those intro solos)

Am I Evil is very easy and sounds good, so are last Fade To Black (easy, just spend some time) and the unforgiven.

It had strange markings around the outside (denoting powerchords)
Moreover it looks like something a little too advanced for crappy old me

I don't really understand what is so good about Metallica yes they are outstanding instrumentalists but very few of there songs are that great (in my opinion). I think the singer is rather horrible and with the exception of a few songs most of there stuff is boring and redundant. There new stuff is so bad that I would rather listen to the average pop song than torture myself by listening to St.Anger and whatever the other crappy songs are called.

My preferred version of of Am I evil is an improv jazz one. Oh so much more fun.
And I never really got into soundgarden

Tis a pity - Soundgarden are an awesome band and Chris Cornell is one of modern rock's great voices

Their album won't be realeased untill mid this year earliest, so there's no chance that they'll be hitting Europe before next year. Unless they do a festival tour before the states, but I imagine it'll be unlikely that they're in Europe before next year.

Yeah for sure. Soundgarden is one of my next favorite bands, after Metallica. Can't deny, and as a drummer, Cameron has some awesome grooves and fills in a lot of the songs. I love the drumming on Am I Evil? too. It's a song everyone should learn lol. It'll be my first when I start picking up the guitar soon...

I don't know why everyone makes such a big deal about how they think James's voice is supposedly deteriorating. In comparison to others, James's voice is in great shape considering how long they've been around i.e. Brian Johnson of AC/DC--im a fan of theirs but i hope for his sake that AC/DC doesn't go on another tour so he can at least talk in future years.

^^and what about James Labrie of Dream Theater?
Fine and dandy on albums but often like cat-strangling live

You really need to stop doing that.

If people want to ask questions about Metallica let them ask them here. If nothing else, it builds up the community.

Being told to bugger off and look it up for themselves doesn't.
