alas, tis my dearest parents that think metallica is sent from satan to bring hell on earth through booze and metal (at least the 80's anyways).
funny part is that sounds pretty true.
But i am not ALLOWED to buy it. Im just wondering if thats the way the file is, or if i just downlaoded a corrupt one?

I've bought a Cort X-6 and a Kustom Dual 35 DFX amp a couple of days ago. It's my first guitar and I really want to learn to play guitar, and especially Metallica.
Now I've tried to get that crunchy Metallica sound out of this amp (full distortion, high bass, very low mid and medium/high High) but I don't seem to be able to get anything more than a heavy rock feeling out of the amp.
Now my question is...is this a known factor with this amp ? And would I be able to get that crunchy Metallica sound (MoP/ AJFA era) with a Boss MT2 metalzone pedal ?
Thanks in advance
Oh yeah, I'm new here :)

First off, welcome to the forums.
Secondly, I know this question is kinda Metallica related but for more guitar orientated questions try visiting the guitar forum.
But the MT2 should help to get a crunchy/scooped sound, but try going to a guitar shop and trying it out to see if it has the sound you want.

Well, I started to find any Kirk Hammett related topics and then i discovered this musicianforums and also I discovered Metallica Official thread. I must admit, I really LOVE Metallica from Kill em' All to St. Anger, tough St.Anger is kinda phatetic lol...
well anyway, I started reading this thread and when i finally got onto th page 30 I started to wonder how long is this thread anyway? And I was kinda stunned when i realized Its over 400 pages
Here are my statements:
Current band members in order of priority ( IMO)
Kirk
Jaimz
Lars
Rob
I have to admit, I'm a huge fan of Kirk Hammett and I like absolutely everything about him.
I saw someone saying that Rob looks like a Donkey Kong when playing and i kinda agree with that lol
Kk, best songs (not in order of priority):
Master Of Puppets
The Unforgiven II (lead me to Metallica)
One
Sanitarium
Whiskey In the Jar
Fade to Black
Seek and Destroy
For Whom the Bell tolls
Ride the Lighting
Creeping Death
Battery
Enter Sandman.
Best Album...hmm...I think they are all good but...hmm..the black Album...and Ride the Lightning and Master Of Puppets are equal...but again, it's just IMO..
Kirk Hammet rules!
Long live Metallica. :thumb:

yea it doesn't look all that bad. it's one of my favorite solos
the only hard thing about it looks like going from low on the fretboard to pretty high in like a hundreth of a second and i can't quite do that yet...
yea most solos i dont touch

learn fade to black. it's really not that hard. i cant do that hammers and bends right at the beginning that he uses the wah pedal on live, but the rest is really simple
btoto
01-07-2005, 09:14 AM
^hehe, I can already do all that bends and hammers at the begining. The only part that bugs me in that solo is to finish it (it fades out). I guess I'll copy it from Cunning Stunts version :)

i haven't tried the last part after he starts going back down the fretboard. the bends and hammers piss me off. my fingers aren't quite fast enough. i can do it with a wah easily, just not distorted and with no effects

Yeah that took me a while to learn. But right now I'm working in KEA solos. They're f*cking hard. I can play only:
1. The 4 Horsemen (both (for second I play Mechanix version))
2. Jump In The Fire (1st little and second)
3. No Remorse (second)
4. Seek And Destroy (3rd from 4 solos)
Plus I'm almost finishing whole Phantom Lord.
I don't have a wah pedal so I haven't tried Motorbreath and first from No Remorse.
I've been working on Metal Militia for so long. That hammer-pull parts in the begining are kind of confusing.....I want to learn it so much :upset:

People at my school like new Metallica and always brag about how good St Anger and Enter Sandman is, when they haven't even heard old Metallica, and probably won't like it when they hear it and won't see the talent Metallica has and how creative their albums truely are. These guys at my school listen to ****ty Nu- Metal and then say how good Metallica is and they still listen to Good Charlotte and Simple Plan. They don't even know what music is for Christ sake. Everybody at my school just like the music that's POPULAR*cough for the moment*They don't get open minded about their music. They wouldn't enjoy Dream Theater,(My favourite band which I have tried to get so many people into but they just don't open their ears and try something new)
Me and my best friends Steve and Paul are the only ones in the school who are actually open minded about music. We are big Metallica fans (not sure how much Steve likes them though) and we try to get others into older Meatllica but all they like is the songs that Metallica is known for along with other famous songs by good bands like Fear Factory, only song they actually know is Cyber Waste, and they think Fear Factory is some new band when they have actually been around for almost 15 years, same thing goes for Metallica. Sorry for ranting for so long, its just that posers piss me off so much.

id buy saint anger. nut i dont know if i was doing my money justice. sure, it had some beauties (title, unnamed feeling, invisible kid), but if given the choice i just couldnt go past ride the lightning. for whom the bell tolls set the bar for bassline ingenuity in the 80's, and the various stages of style in fade to black are still reknowned in worldwide metal circles. without a doubt, no band can emulate what metallica did between their early work and their early 90 music. going from arguable the hardest band to rock the early 80's metal scene, to a band that got themselves on to mainstream radio just by music that came from the head, rather from the alcohol induced insanity that the earlier, better alubums seemed to be written with. there are few bands that really grab a metal fan by the heartstrings, but the moment that cemeted my fanatacism for the four horseman was on the DVD Cunning Stunts, listening to Nothing Else Matters hearing the crescendo of sound and the build up of, yeah, yeah , yeaaahhhhhhh then the explosion of Hetfields solo and watching the feeling that he put out in it, words do not start to describe.

People say that Enter the Sandman was the best song ever but for some reason I just can't like it.
Metallica's style is just to off right now. They need to fing there trueself and play like they did before the Black Album.
I agree, the same was with me..I was seven when my dad bought Metallica Cd-s and videos and since that I really love Metallica....well I didn't start to like em right away but U could kinda say i grew up with em...thatnks to Kirk Hammett I play guitar now, 'cause he inspired me.
I once had a situation when my friend came and i had this burned Metallica disk where I had a couple if songs from St. Anger but mostly from older Cd s .
then she asked me what disc is it I said."It's Metallica's" then she was excited, oh play that, I want to hear St.Anger, it's the greatest song ever...I played that to her and after St.Anger came "Ride the Lightning" she was like:"Ewww what band is this?? I hate that kind of music, put Metallica back!"
After I told her it's Metallica, she hates it. ;)

that was when hetfield was in his prime man!!! his best voice was in and justice for all. hes losin his voice now.hes still good though. :thumb:
Hetfields voice:
The timeline-
Kill em All
Ride the lightning = Definitley not the voice of a budding lumberjack, slightly higher than nowadays but did have an excellent punk rock gravel scream quality, maybe a bit like beavis, but down a few notches, and singin about death and stuff rather than his weiner.
Master of puppets
And Justice for all = Playing all those arenas, and with certain 'changes' he started to notice about himself in the shower, the tough hetfield has started to emerge.
Metallica
Load
Reload
S+M = Hetfield now has a near pitch perfect voice on album and live. With all those pies he ate with bob rock he's got a much deeper voice now. Also pleasing to note that live performances are peppered with "YEE-AAHHH!", "BE-BAAYYY!" and surley the mark of one of the greatest frontmen of all time, "OOOOHH!!!"

BTW, someone said about that No Life Till Leather Demo. I have all songs already from it except Metal Militia, plus Motorbreath is half-cut. And it does NOT isnclude No Remorse and Whiplash. I guess they were released in late 82. Oh there are rumours that 'tallica recorded lots of covers in early days in Ron's garage plus a few of their own songs which were not the exact versions of those we hear on KEA.
Hmmmmm, I'd like to hear that. Lars is a cunning biatch ! Please Mr. Ulrich release those demos :p
Just for record, on NLTL James sounds as a tortured Raptor (dinosaur) baby. Dave plays very good though

BTW, if you want those NLTL songs, download them from Limewire. You can also find there a live 1982 version of Hit The Lights with a horrible quality (however it's a very very very rare thing), Motorbreath live from 1983 with Dave on vocals and video concert of Metallica 1983/03 at the Stone SF with Dave on lead guitar (whole concert is 302 MGB).

Yeah, I feel sorry about Ron too. That's kind of weird, I know we won't have 'tallica the way they are without Cliff but that kind of attitude always pis$es you off. Ron was OK and after some time he'd probably improve his skills but they just said goodbye to him. It's unfair. I mean, like the rhythm guitar/vocalist guy in my band.......he sings very good but he screws up everthing on guitar. However I think I won't ask him to leave because we started this whole thing together. I'll give a chance, if I loose my patience I'll leave myself.

Hey JackRoxyou, what tipped you off that metallica might be comin out with a new album next year? Just curious- like did you hear this somewhere or are you just assuming/hoping? Anyways, in the event that they do come out with a new album next year...lets all hope it's nothing like St. Anger! Hopefully all their recent touring, and playing mostly the classics in doing so, has reminded them of how they used to thrash when Cliff was still there... :upset:...

i heard the new album is gunna be a return to their roots, sort of black - justice feel. also, from an interview with lars i read on the metallicasite, it is gunna, have some huge bassline innovation from robert (pops, slaps). dunno if they are for real though, but a bit of innovation in bass would be good, a nice change from all of jason's sliding techniques.
All the information I could find on the site about them being in a studio was from St. Anger....

true, but they're 80's stuff was a bit similar, but amazing
i'm actually pretty optimistic, on the MIAWTW tour, they played mostly stuff from the 80's. i heard 3 black album songs (NEM, ES, SBT) and about 10-15 songs pre-black album. they played fuel, i think that was the only post-black album song... so maybe this album will be more like the older things

I don't know, seeing 4 ~40 year olds trying to still play thrash metal doesn't sound like a good combo. Its not that they won't be able to play thrash metal, but they can't create it anymore. All of their riffs post 91 have so bluesy or soft rock feel to them. I'd prefer them playing whatever they want, something different hopefully. It'll keep the 20 year old chain going of them releasing a different album everytime. But if they EVER experiment with country or punk music, I will hunt them down and cut them  .

I dunno 'bout u guys but i'd reeeeally like to hear some new ballady metal on their new album. Seems to me as tho on they really ignored their success with other metal ballads i.e. NEM and the Unforgiven pt. 1 and 2 on St. Anger. Hey I figure they're already as mainstream as they can get, why try to go back now?..

Metallica have lost so much since the early records. St. Anger was pretty terrible, although the rest of the newer albums are pretty good (different style than the likes of Master of Puppets and Ride The Lightning, but still good). They're missing the incredible pace and thrashy style (Battery, Master of Puppets, Fight Fire With Fire, Hit The Lights to name a few are good examples of what I'm getting at). About the closest thing to thrash thats post-black album/self titled is Fuel (which, don't get me wrong, is a good song). Anyways, nuff of my ranting bollocks.
To clear up something, Whiskey In The Jar is a cover of the Thin Lizzy song.
One last thing: Bring back the solo's!!!!!!!! I demand to hear more Hammet.

You guys need to relax. Mama Said is an awesome song. It's not just a simple kill/fvck/smash everyone song. It is deeper. Maybe that's the reason most of you don't understand that song.
Some people here need to grow up :upset:

I liked Mama Said, the fact of the matter is that Metallica is no longer a thrash band, even though everyone wants them to be. Finally, they are one of the best metal bands out there, will continue to change, and this is a perfect example

I don't really mind what kind of thing their new stuff's is as long as:
Its well produced
There are guitar solos
It sounds awesome live.

Where´s the guitar solos on St Anger??
WE WANT HAMMET!!

Thank u guys sooo much for bringing up the lack of solos on St. Anger! It was so empty without Kirk's guitar solos--sounded more like Korn or some crap like that.

First of all, solos on some of the tracks off St. Anger wouldn't really fit IMHO. I don't mind the lack of solos so much but I hope that on the next record we'll have a ballad and/or an instrumental. The thing is all previous instrumentals had something to do with Cliff, they were either (co-)written by him or in his memory so I think asking for an instrumental is far-fetched (let's not forget their refusal to make My Friend Of Misery one), but at least a ballad to see if they still got it.

i think a return to the thrash metal that they helped create would be a huge come back, it would definately make up for st anger.

I kinda wish they'd release the "Elevator version" of NEM on an album. Some may think it's corny to kind of re-release a song, but i'd really like to have that version on an album.

Interesting thought...If Metallica go back to Thrash people will probaly say they sold out. If they continue along their present course people will still say they sold out

Actually, only the posers would say they've sold out if they return to thrash.

How can they sell out if they return to thrash? It makes no sense  I can't see them returning to thrash with their new album. I think they'll have the same kinda sound as they had in the late 90's (ie. No Leaf Clover, Minus Human, I Disappear).
munky_magik
01-10-2005, 03:14 PM
well the majority of their fans wish they would return to thrash, so if they do it to please their fans it would constitute a definition of selling out.

that is of course one of the problems with declaring a band sold out. No one actualy know their personal reasons for doing so, thus they can't really say **** about it.

Just to clear up on thing for all/most Metallica fans, a good song does *NOT* need a guitar solo. I have always found that Metallica fans worship their solo, and think any song without one is crap.
Not that I don't like Metallica. Master of Puppets is an amazing album. The Four Horseman, Leper Messiah, Orion and ...And Justice For All are my fav songs.

Kill 'em All
- Seek and Destroy
- Four Horsemen
- Whiplash
Ride the Lightning (If you have the book, learn them all)
- Call of Ktulu
- Creeping Death
- For Whom the Bell Tolls or Ride the Lightning
- Fade to Black
Master of Puppets
- Master of Puppets
- Battery
- Damage Inc.
...And Justice for All
- Blackened
- Eye of the Beholder
- One
Those are just my suggestions, take them for what they're worth. Those are my favorite songs to play off of each cd up to the Black Album (which I do not like very much).
