Just wondering, why don't Metallica usually play Leper Messiah live?
kirk_wylde
12-16-2003, 10:03 AM
I wouldn't go saying that. A lot of their lyrics dig really deep and I think that that's good, it can bring the fans closer to them and them closer to the fans if you catch my drift. St. Anger wasn't all bad, it was just not what people had expected. So yea.
Well said

They played Leper Messiah at the fillmore show, but I don't know why they don't add it to their regular set list. I think it's a great song.

Everyone hates St. Anger but if you think about it is pretty good compared to the rest of the stuff they have now
true its not better then the rest of the 80's rock but its pretty good compared to the songs they have now
Compared to a lot of mainstream stuff, its ok, good. Compared to a lot of underground bands, it isn't so good.

Yeah It's pretty good but I think they should play the Whole of seek and destroy more often, not just in the medely

IMO, yeah they are.
I like Kirks experimental side. Its really cool. They are good quality cds. But if your expecting thrash or metal, then don't bother.
No, that's not necessary, I like all music with guitars in it.
So yeah, I'll probably like them.
I'll add them to the *sigh* endless list of cd's to buy

as a good drummer i can definitely tell u AJFA is pretty easy to do drums. Disposable heroes is harder, and thats not very hard. The hardest drum song is Battery, the double bass is crazy n its exteremly sincopated on the fills. What do other drummers think is the hardest song

Bumping is good
If my drummers whinings are anything to go by then i can agree with ZildjianDummer that battery is very hard to play. I think the easiest Metallica song on the drums is "For Whom The Bell Tolls". Even I can play that, and I suck pretty bad.

Yeah. Frantic. Hate the lyrics to that song. In fact the whole album is quite lyrically shallow.

St Anger is in my opinon a good work of metal... sure it could use a few solos but as Kirk said they really didnt fit... its a new direction to be sure and of cource Master and Lightning are unrepetable masterpieces. Ask Divinci to repain the MonaLisa or something like that it cant be done... We should all accept St Anger for what it is... some good rock and roll... like the guy above said "its catchy as hell". Right. Hey when are we going to find the tour dates for the new US Tour I hope that Metallica does come to NC within the summer if not im going to be pissed.

i think they had to get St.Anger out of their system and that will be the last album of that sort of sound and song writing style, maybe now they will focus more and get back to writing songs that will be considered classics rather than songs that are raw and either completly hated by the majority and loved by a few.

It looks like he's putting effort in yeah, but I dunno.....it seems like he can't deal with his drumming half the time. i think because of the injury, he could use some more practice, a rotator cuff injury is something work with, he shouldn't really be playing to hard either. Drumming lessons will help him get back in the big rythem, like when he was in ...And Justice For All and stuff.

i dont think he got worse for sure... he has some crazy double bass. I dont know if you play drums, but going really fast at the rate he does makes you sweat pretty bad. Hes sticking his tounge out for fun, not cuz he cant handle it. The injury doesnt help either. obviously hes not as good as buddy rich or alot of those other guys, but hes up there.
also, a lot of his beats are simple because back in the 80's almost all rock had simple beats.

That has nothing to do with his playing, just the sound. I think his drumming is awesome on that album. IMO he hasn't played that good since ...And Justice For All.

I've just got back from their London show. It was......amazing.
They played a really good mix, the obligatory greatest hits, and some unexpected ones. Damage Inc., for one. That was a shock to me.
They played 3 St. Anger songs. Frantic, Dirty Window, and St. Anger. And quite frankly I wanted more. I think many people would be surprised at how good those songs sounded tonight. But to be fair, they did 'fix' them. Frantic (Which I always thought was a good song anyway), is now graced by a short, sharp, bloody fast solo in the middle, plus double-timing the intro. Dirty Window also got a proper solo inserted that was surprisingly good. St. Anger didn't get a solo, but again had the riffs 'thrashed up', and the moved the chorus chords/riff down an octave, which makes a hell of a difference. This just showed me what I thought all along - St. Anger has some really great songs on it that were badly let down through some crap arrangement and production. Tone Lars' drums down, speed the riffs up and put in a solo or two and hey, look, its Metallica back to their usual immense self.
After the double-encore that you knew was coming a mile off (Hey, they're getting old, not surprised they need a rest after finishing Master of Puppets ;)), they actually did the only 'spontaneous' encore I've seen. In the middle of throwing the plectrums out into the crowd, James suddenly got behind the drums, started strumming while playing the bass drum with his foot, said 'While we're here.........', and off they went into 'Am I Evil', the only Load/Re-Load tune of the night, followed by....wait for it......Hit the Lights. Oh yes. :D

That must have been a kickass concert. I wanna see them when they come to Australia but the tickest sold out on the first day. It sucked.
The guy who said that Lars is panting, he does that only when the camera is focusing on him. I watch him sometimes when the cameras aren't on him and he plays like a normal drummer.
And I'm getting the Binge & Purge dvd for xmas yeah! Can't wait till I watch it.

What a crock of ****, of course kirk writes most of the main solos have you ever watched the making of the black album??? Thats all kirk does in the band, he goes off by himself to write the solo, comes back to james and lars (and from balck onwards rock too) and they **** with it till it fits the song right.
Mustaine27
12-23-2003, 07:23 AM
Did you see him write all the solos by himself?
Is he credited for them?
on that exact "making of the black album" did you hear James say Enter Sandman was the first Riff Kirk wrote?
So that means if that was his first riff (which he was credited for) that would mean he would be credited for just solos before that spot in time..........right?
That would be why he's credited for writing 14 solos from Kill 'Em All to ....And Justice For All. This is why I'm making that assumption.

Yeah thats what I think as well.
Plus, most of Kirks solos don't take much writing talent as most are just wah pentatonic wankery. But on MOP it states where someone else plays a solo, meaning that it is Kirk unless otherwise stated.

yeah the first MOP solo was made by and played by james, and by my knowledge, that's the only solo he's got his hands on but it's illogical to think that they haven't influenced eachother on the riffs or solos somewhere along the line seeing as they are in the same band for more than 20years.

On the kirk writing solos thing also on and justice it says james does all melodies, harmonies, lyrics and the second solo on to live is to die. So either lars is a closet lead guitarist or kirk writes their solos.
kirk has a fender strat and a fernandes strat (thats in the one video) that he uses for studio work at times. Also on the unforgiven in san diego on binge and purge he uses a white fender strat with singles coils. Quality single coils are good for lead work (look at hendrix, blackmore, yngwie the list goes on), you only really need the hummers for that trademark tallica crunch in the rhythm sections.

kirk_wylde
12-24-2003, 05:49 AM
I want to try and settle this solo argument once and for all. IMO to get writing credits surley that person has to have an intregal par in the song structe or lyrics. Just coming in and doing a solo over the top would probably not get you writing credits. Plus in a recent interview james said Kirk has always done ALL of the fast solos because he can't do them himself. And on the 14 or so songs kirk gets credited on (first Four albums) it probably means he did more than just the solo
RockerGav

Gimme a minute and I'll post mine, needless to say it kicked some ***.
Short review
Setlist as I remember it:
Battery
Four Horsemen
Ride The Lightning
For Whom The Bell Tolls
Fight Fire With Fire
Harvester of Sorrow
Master of Puppets
Dirty Window (+ Solo  )
Frantic
*Encore*
Nothing Else Matters
Creeping Death
Seek And Destroy
*Encore*
One
Enter Sandman
*Half-encore*
Disposable Heroes? 30 seconds of something, can't remember what it was, then:
Blitzkrieg
So I get there at 2:30pm (Doors open at 6), we get to queue inside. I guess there were already 100 people there. So we hang around in the queue, go off to Burger King to get takeaway Super Large XL Double Whopper's (Big hole in me wallet from that dinner), then we get to go in. So we run, and I mean ****in run so that we get stopped by the security guards. Anyway, we get there (standing, that is) and we have a lovely chat with these cool people around us, who hype us up for Godsmack, who weren't half bad.
So Godsmack play, they weren't terrible (OH MY GOD THAT LES PAUL!!!), and end their set with the infamous Drum Duel. And the vocal-type-dude from Godsmack kept reassuring us that they'd shut the **** up soon and let us listen to the Gods Of Metal.
So Metallica have the worst roadies ever who take 1/2 hour to set up their stuff, then finally Metallica break into Battery. As I said, there were two people between me and James (excluding the bouncer-dudes). I was getting ****ing crushed, so after a few songs I move back again (And start breathing again). So that was all cool, and it ****ing ruled. And I had a really cool mosh around me, but without those skinhead twats that were at the front.
*More to come in an eensey bit*

2. The Thing that should not be. Nowhere near as good as the rest of the album.
3. St Anger. (I was struggling okay?)

I saw Metallica live in Earls Court on Friday the 19th! They totally kicked ***
Setlist:
Blackened
Creeping Death
Seek and Destroy
Fade To Black
The Thing That Should Not Be
Frantic
For whom the Bell Tolls
Dirty Window
Sad But True
One
Damage Inc.
-----------
Harvester Of Sorrow
Nothing Else Matters
Master Of Puppets

Hit The Lights
Thats a great set-list to start with!!! The guys played the songs excellently and had the whole place signing along with every song and had us bouncing around aswell!! It was a totally awesome gig! I can't wait to see them live again :D
I think overall we had a better setlist.
We had Battery, you had Blackened, that was the only thing you had better than us. We got Motorbreath :p

I was wondering If you could compose a dream metallica concert what would it be like. By this I mean what support band would cover and a setlist of twenty songs to be used in the said concert.
Mine would be-
Support act - Ozzy osbourne
Songs
Open with One
Battery
Fade to Black
Escape
Master of puppets
Seek and destroy
Motorbreath
Nothing else matters
Master of puppets
Orion
Welcome home (sanitarium)
Sad but true
Unforgiven II
Harvester of sorrow
For whom the bell tolls
Ride the lightning
Sad but true
Jump in the fire
Blitzkreeg
Astronomy
Probably left out some good ones But just from 20 songs (admitedly two covers) that would be my concert

^ For some reason, a lot of die-hard fans don't like "Escape." It was too cheesy for Metallica at the time it came out (at least the chorus was), and it sounded to Maidenesque for their fans I guess. Either way, it's obviously not popular enough for them to put in a setlist.
*Ponders about dream setlist*
Blackened
Fight Fire With Fire
Motorbreath
No Remorse
For Whom The Bell Tolls
One
Ride The Lightning
Enter Sandman
*****
Battery
Dyer's Eve
*****
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
Harvestor of Sorrow
Leper Messiah
*****
Master Of Puppets

i always loved that song, and i do aggree that it does have more of an uplifitng Iron Maiden type chorus to it. For the time though it was one of James' better lyrical pieces though.

The only Metallica songs I've ever heard are, in this order:
Enter Sandman
St. Anger
I've been thinking about getting Master of Puppets.
I would recommend puppets justice or lightning. They all are sweet.

i'm kind of curious if anyone here knows how to get the real and justice for all sound. i mean effects and pedals. i searched for their gear but i can't really find out which one is proper. kirk and james use so many effects. i know that it is almost impossble to sound like them, but maybe someone knows any effects, pedals that could sound close to justice album. ha ?
thanks

What affects would these be ...? Most of the sound on that album is generated from poor recording technique; set your gain up high, medium contour and treble and have a good deal of bass in it. The sound they got was just generated from using low/medium quality recording equipment.
*Is diehard Metallica obsessive*

Its very...different to their other stuff... Just like Motorbreath for instance. Doesn't mean its bad...

Part of thier sound to would be thier amp, if your using some 8" 40 watt amp thats not going to get your sound, what do you play through? in accordance to what squirrel h4x said, you would need either a good distortion pedal with a decent amp or a marshall half

I was wondering if ne 1 knew how to get a perfect sound for the effect used on the bass at the begining of For Whom the Bell Tolls. I have a Boss GT-6b effects pedal, and i have spent a long time trying to get the effect right, but it never seems to sound right. If ne 1 else has this pedal, and has figured out a perfect sounding setting, could you please tell me it. If not then would you be able to tell me what effects are being used.
Thanks

in terms of skill, rob has cliff smashed into the ground. listen to any of robs earlier works with past bands, the man is a bass machine. its a shame james wont let him (sounds like the jason scenerio) do anything to further the bands sound, i know he joined after the latest album...but i would put money hetfield tells him what to play and how to play it.

I saw a live video of Rob a while ago. The guy has a certain stage presence :thumb:
From what I could hear the playing was good too.

12-28-2003, 04:07 PM
Rob has had more time to show off some more skill. Thing is, Cliff might have just as good or better, but since he wasnt around with the band for very long, the parts he played were prolly just to go with the song. but, rob prolly was better than cliff though anyway...
Rob was very good live. I have no idea if he had any stage presence, because there was a tall dude blocking my view of him, but a friend said that he was spinning and all sorts.

I'm seeing Metallica in exactly 18 days. I can't fuc*ing wait.
Rob has a very good stage presence and i think hes an ace bassist, however I think all 3 of them were good in their own different ways
naboo
12-28-2003, 05:45 PM
i saw a vid of Rob playing blackened with the band and he did have a good stage presence. I like Cliff for my favorite bassist of theirs, he was very creative and just soo good.
by the way, is Cunning Stunts good? I have Cliff em All and i think its great (besides the bad quality at some points).
ZildjianDummer
12-28-2003, 05:46 PM
whats james problem? i think metallica's songs would be better if ucould actually hear the bass
James' problem is that when the whole band (+ Bob ****) jam as in St Anger, we get a really bad song. When James and Lars write the basis, we get a good song.
Go figure.

I like Jason but why is it that he uses a pick instead of fingers to play. Rob and Cliff used their fingers. I think that bassist who play with fingers look alot more skilled. But i like the way how Jason plays like. He really gets into the music.

I didn't like newsted at all, especially on And Justice for all, you could barely hear him! Rock's stuff is insanely simple to play (just drop every string about 10 tones) so i would say Burton. and i dont like playing with a pick, so its easier to play stuff from burtons era on my bass.
vv p.s. the 1000th post better be good!!! i could of taken it but meh. ridethespiral should have the honours
