I wasn't sure about this, have people committed suicide after listenning to Fade To Black, that we know of?
A couple of years ago I was going through some pretty rough stages myself, and started taking the lyrics of Fade To Black a little seriously, and started thinking how they apply to my own life (Which is the reason, I think, I like Fade To Black so much).
Luckily I'm too weak to actually do it, but I'm sure there are people who could, I'm just wondering if there are people who have?
ya. supposedly metallica got a bunch of letters from "ex-fans" who let them know that they totally agree with that song and that song helped them commit suicide. i guess they might be commiting suicide anyawys sometime in their life, and that song finished it off for them....

What would be interesting to see how people think: Sanitarium vs. One.
In my opinion Sanitarium ****s all over One. Both in musical(ness? :P) and lyrical content.
One for me. It's One and Fade to Black which I can't decide between. I used to like One more, but then Fade to Black really hit me, and now I just can't choose.

yea in one vs. saniterium its one for me, but one and fade to black??? fade to black was the first metallica song i could play and the song that really got me going into metallica. i think the solo is a little overrated in one and way underrated in fade to black. i like both lyrics, but one's more. i like FTB's intro more, but the overall guitar i like more in one.
its pretty difficult to pick, but im going with Fade to Black

When they were recording RTL, after a gig in Boston (i think) most of their guitars and amps were taken including Hetfields favourite Marshall... he searched all over Europe for another but didnt find one and settled with one he found in Norway or Denmark or something...
Its not 100% proven that the only reason they wrote Fade To Black was because of that... as Lars said in an interview that James and him were toying around alot with the idea of death/suicide in a song.

Exactly, it's called "supporting the band". The band has a job, and that is to play music. It's not like Lars, James, Kirk, and Rob have second jobs to cover the rent, they make their living off of music, just like every other band.

People need to stop crying and whining about how metallica are sellouts. if a band tries to make it big, they need album sales, and they cant make that money when 500,000 people download that album instead of paying for it. I dont need to say this, people should just know it and support the **** band if you wanna listen to it. Metallica didn't need the money, but other bands that just come out need that money and when they dont get it, a good band could go to waste because lack of funding. Grow up already, its not hard to support something you love.

I have nothing but respect and support for Metallica and how they dealt with the Napster incident. Only a band with their chops could've done what they did and anyone who considers it "selling out" should ponder the cost of such legal action. Perhaps "paying out" would be a more appropriate term?
People of this opinion are also missing the bigger picture here, as pointed out by Paranoidd and ^Dream~Theater^; if a giant like Metallica had not taken this action, many up-and-comers would suffer as a result - the lack of monetary support for new bands would have resulted in a major hindrance to ALL musical progression.
You may not want to hear this but the music industry is an "industry" and without this corporate, business aspect, most bands would never make it out of their own home towns.
Oh yeah, favourite member = Kirk: excellent guitarist - great speed, technique, plenty of emotion and "feel"
(That last bit is for cai2k :naughty: )
Song: Fuel
Misheard Lyric: Gimme Fuel, gimme fire, gimme donuts on the fire.
Real Lyric: Gimme fuel, gimme fire, gimme that which I desire
Wow, just when I thought i've heard them all. On the other hand, Mmmm...donuts.
lol. whenever i first heard it like 6 years ago i thought it was: gimme fuel, gimme five, gimme double on the jive.

Anybody can play scales. Sure, good lead players aren't that common, but everybody wants to be the flashy center of attention lead man.
A solid, precise rhythm player who can compose and play really good melody is hard to come by. Without a good rhythm player, a good lead doesn't matter.

Cliff owns all. Before he died he was probably the best bassist in the world, in my opinion he would be loads better than claypool, whom everybody says is best, if cliff had not died. Cliff could play stuff on bass that some people would struggle to play on guitar. To top it off, he was the most musically trained of the band, and he wrote several large portions of some of the songs' guitar parts, aside from his own bass part. Last, he had the coolest personallity of the group

Well, Cliff was quite intelligent, and was very inventive, in the way he combined classical music's technical feel with metal's aggressive attitude.
However, there are some far more technically proficient bassists, and also a few who match his ingenuity.

Depending on the style... For example, Robert's bass solo live is most impressive in the funk category. The guy is a monster when it comes to slapping and such. But in his solo, when he hit the overdrive and went for the fast plucking/ Cliff kind of style, it lacked a whole lot of passion, and much more wasn't near the level to Cliff. He attempted the 3 finger humungo runs like cliff did, but it was covered in dead, missed notes.
I, much like most, cannot WAIT to hear how Rob compliments the writing process...Because...WOw, the guy is amazing.

Yeah the instrumentals were awesome, Call of the Ktulu, hello? Dyer's Eve is pretty sweet, one of my favorites. I was stoked when they played Madison because that was the last song they played, which I have never seen or heard of being played live at all. My list of Metallica favs:
Dyer's Eve
Call of the Ktulu
Phantom Lord
Leper Messiah
Frayed Ends of Sanity
Ride the Lightning (love drumming that song)
and Trapped Under Ice in no particular order

Yeah and so was Dave Mustaine (the guy who kirk replaced), but we dont give a **** about him!! get with the times, sure cliff was original, but he's dead now (RIP). theres none of this 'tis just that cliff was the original' bull****. Hell, no matter how much of the ongoing metallica legacy his memory is apart of, cliff is gone, id even go as far to say that Jason was more metallica than cliff, or maybe not. but i do know that rob rocks now and NOTHING ELSE MATTERS
i'll drink to that - the crazy bass

12-08-2004, 03:15 PM
Lol ok Mustaine contributed to a small portion of very early material. And besides, he went on to form Megadeath, so we all like to give him credit for that. Maybe if he wasn't such a crazy drunk we would be worshipping Mustaine-created Metallica riffs lol.

[QUOTE=JACKROXYOU]Robert Turillio is brilliant as well(great 5 min solo at the concert I went to) but saying that Cliff owned the bass world is strechin it. dont get me wrong cliff did own, as a songwriter/ riffmaker. but best bass of his time. na[/QU
how long did rob trujillo play with ozzy for?
i'll get to you on that
Ya mustaine did ride the lightning, ktulu, and kill em all. He did have some wicked solos... ride the lightening is in the top 5 for my fac songs.
My top songs.
1. wherever i may roam.
2 no leaf clover.
3 mop
4 ride the lightening
5 creeping death
eye of the beholder is a close 6 but i had to give to creeping death. eotb has some powerful, meaningful lyrics about the d-a-m-n us government

I, much like most, cannot WAIT to hear how Rob compliments the writing process...Because...WOw, the guy is amazing.
is rob a better bass player than jason newsted?

how many people have seen the bass solo by cliff burton in "Cliff 'Em All" where he just plays a jaw dropping solo (fingers no doubt) for about 2 minute?? Because if people can beat THAT solo, im just gonna quit guitaring/bassing(<-word doesn't sound right) forever.
on the other hand, where is this live solo by rob? I've never seen it, but it sounds pretty good. The only problem i have with that guy is the way he walks on stage likes hes trying to take a turd, and his headbanging style. Whats with this side-to-side motion? He's a terrible performer, but an awsome musician. Best performer is obvioulsy Cliff (the only one who did hand actions relateing to songs WHILE playing bass, showed a hell of a lota emotion, pretty neat), but Newsted also comes close because throughout the entire time he was with metallica, he was the only one that truly kicked *** on stage (i would have to argue that he commanded almost as much attention live as james and kirk on stage, which made the band sort of complete). Now, everones givin up on headbangin (due to health reasons no doubt), and i actually feel compelled to turn off the T.V when I see rob perform. With Burton/Newsted, seeing metallica live was so different than today. I almos think that fans see them live just out of respect for the band and to see them play their favorite songs. I don't believe they're accumilating fans because seeing metallica live is still that awsome. I think its the old age....or the lack of alcohol...
boy did I ever drop some hard opinions. don't flame me, metallica rocks and all of its previous/future/present members do also.

i don't like avril, but i think the only reason it sounded "bad" is because it was sung by a girl. The voice thing wasn't there, and actually neither was the tone. But hell, did you see when Limp Bizkit performed?? The pained expression on kirks face is priceless!

That's unfortunate because anyone who misses Metallica is missing out on an awesome show. They won't be playing like they are now for much longer I don't think. They still have such awesome energy, which is very impressive considering a 25 year career. And when people bitch about them changing their style of music it's just crazy. Think about it: are you still playing the same exact **** when you first became a musician? If so, you really need to grow musically, because that's kind of weak. Just because Metallica is a metal legend doesn't mean they're a whole lot different from us as far as musicianship and ideals.

Metallica were simply great from kill em all through to and justice for all.....
After that it starts to go down hill I hate to say. I'm a big metallica fan, and have been for a long time. But it is rare I will listen to anything on the black album or later....unless it's live of course. Sandman really doesn't agree with me. I still watch anything live I can get my hands on though ^^
Favourite song has to be Fade To Black I think though, or to live is to die....(that song still makes my spine shiver everytime I hear it, in a good way I mean.)

I bought me a bass guitar the other day and i've been working on Metallica songs (of course), but for some reason, even playing the simplest stuff sounds crappy. the bass is a rogue, but im thinkin maybe the strings are crap. see, once my bro got a crappy acoustic and the strings sucked so you had to like, mash the strings down really hard for it to not make that BWOW noise. the same thing is happening with my bass so im thinking getting better strings would make it easier to press down and make the sound flow more smoothly. think that would help?

Wow finally someone other than me has said that...and who was that clown talking about blues guitar? Is that guy insane? Because if he has EVER listened to Metallica, it would be very apparent Kirk's deep blue's influence. You're a moron my friend, a true disgrace to not only yourself, but humanity. Just another little thief bitching about file sharing. I mean if you were a painter and some guy came into your studio, snapped a bunch of pictures and printed them off and started spreading them around without your consent, would you be happy with it? No, doubt it. Music is art, too, as any musician knows. So stop bitchin because you can't steal anymore. (btw I have downloaded songs too but I'm not complaining because people are cracking down on that stuff.) And please, Cy-bonk, change your avatar, because you're giving us drummers a bad name.

And why the hell do people keep calling it the "some kind of monster" cd...do you realize it's in fact entitled "St. Anger"?
They're not talking about St.Anger, but the Some Kind of Monster EP which has the Some Kind of Monster single and some live performances

Geez, to be honest I do not like St.Anger. And i do not understand why Metallica says it's the best album they ever make. They say it's a bigger album than the black album. And songs that totally blows and skull-crashing metal which they had never done before. I beg to differ.
1) I don't understand why they made that statement of saying St Anger would be Metallica's best album.
2) I don't understand why Kirk didn't make any solos in the Album. Solos really can define our emotions our pain adding-on to the lyrics.
3) I don't understand why they rush into an album since they've returned, why can't they make a proper album so the new generation of kids don't get misuderstood that Metallica sucks because of St.Anger.
4) The lyrics in St.Anger totally doesn't make any sense at all. Compare Fade To Black and Unforigven, it's so meaningful and could mean so much to each and every one of the fans out there.
5) Do they even know St.Anger had really cause a big disappointment to the fans? And to as far as some will hate Metallica.
I will still respect them but this are the questions i wanted to get off my chest for quite some time and i hope someone will answer them properly and reasonable.

You do not like St. Anger? I think that's a farfetched thing to say for a guy with a user name stating "Metallica Rules". As far as Kirk's not soloing, did you read the feature in Guitar World last year on St. Anger, where Kirk said they didn't fit with the songs? And the lyrics mean something personnaly to Lars, Kirk, and James.

Hmmm...maybe it's because they love music and want to PLAY music???? I'm just going out on a limb on that one. Seriously, dude, if you really think Metallica rules, you wouldn't be bashing their newest album.

I lost some respect for Metallica there.
1. though it's interesting that Kirk has plugs.
I haven't read back much, but I'm assuming that means ear plugs. They all had ear plugs when I went.
2. They completely ****ed up on one of my personal favorite songs "Creeping Death" (I'll send anyone who wants the live track).
Don't get me wrong, I love Metallica, but I'd have to say lately I haven't been all to pleased with them.

I agree with in cold blood. Don't be bashing them anymore as i think metallica already got the message. Kirk didnt want to solo anymore becasue like cold blood said, they solos wouldn't fit into the songs very well. He was also very tired of soloing. After being on the road for years and years it kinda wears u out. i dont know if he had anything left in him to write more solos for that album (thats what my guitar teacher said anyways). I am pretty sure Metallica will do there best to please fans with their next album becuase St.Anger got a huge response  , and if it's not that good im not gonna bash em cause i respect those dudes and there prolly trying their best to write better stuff. And about the hair thats the one thing metallica did wrong most, they NEVER should have cut it (i guess newstead couldnt help it lol for those fans who know what im talking about) with metal the hair isn't everything but its just an important thing for me lol.

I'm sick of redundancies...
While I'm not a big fan of Metallica, I'm a bigger fan of their more recent hard rock career. But I'm really not catching on to this whole idea that Hammet wouldn't like to solo anymore. Unless he wants to experiment just pure metal sounds free of intricate solos, he should at least try to grip a new method of soloing consistent with the new sound. Yes it's difficult, but it would prove to be a great feat for a band that wishes to inspire the new generation of fans.

I think the whole issue is "time". If Hammet spent some time making awesome solos, which he did for AJFA, then I think fans would have embraced St. Anger. But seeing as he felt the solos he came up with didn't fit with the songs, maybe he'll spend a little more time for the next record.
After what happened with St. Anger, I sure hope they step up to the plate finally and make a better album. The last awesome album they made was Metallica, so its really been a while.

Yes, I still haven't lost my hope for Metallica. But it is a bit depressing that Hammet had to make that compromise. I'm a big fan of Metallica solos.

Yeah. Well, maybe there will be a couple solos. Kirk did say he was tired of doing "Stevie Ray Vaughn solos", I think that's an obvious refrence to the solos on the Black Album, Load, and Reload.

James told the cowd that they were here to have a good time and didn't want to mess around with anybody. Well, since there were cameras everywhere, they decided to review the tape after the show.

yeah. As to Lars and the drum set---absolutely hilarious. Hey--I watched a bunch of tapes of concerts and found that in every one I saw, someone throws a banana peel at James...anyone else notice that? I even have a really old, pre-AJFA tour bootleg of Sanitarium, in which James suddenly starts yelling about someone throwing things at him...
Also...heh...perhaps this has already been addressed (checking 344-ish pages for it is tedious) but if it hasn't, go to stupidvideos.com...there's a clip of a bootleg there in which Kirk falls flat on his face doing a solo in mid-song....
and finally...the lack of solos on St Anger...well, yeah, a lifetime of being a guitar god would soon become less-than-enjoyable, but if you really listen to the music on St Anger, some of the guitar work is actually pretty good...like Sweet Amber and Invisible Kid (although I only payed attention to the cool vocal work on that one)....
yeah. There are my two-to-fifty cents...
