Ahhhhhhhhh, pffffffft! No Megadeth can ever get close to the legendary Four Horsemen! I personally do not like Mustaine. He got thrown out of Metallica for good and obvious reasons. When he started his own band, Megadeth, he basically tried copying Metallica. C'mon look at the Megadeth writing style on Megadeth CDs! Its almost an exact copy of Metallica's writing on CDs.
I don't really think he can "copy" metallica when some of their early and best work was written by/in conjunction with him. That was his style, which he brought to Megadeth.

I would have to agre on a couple of things sum 41 was the best band on icon( why the hell was that canadain B**** on there sing fuel? must be mtv politics) any... and yeah st. anger wasnt what i was expecting form the boys from sf in a "return" album, it has a few good songs on it(some kind of monster, sweet amber imo), but hopefully the next one will be a la Master of Puppets. I did see them on my Birthday actually my 21 first what a nite that was in Spokane on March 21,2004 it was F***ing awesome godsmack played a great set for about 45 min. then introduced MetallicA on stage and came right in with Blackend, the whole place was moving with headbangers thrashers, they played for 3 hours, left go some picks and some of the gear signed, and went and had a beer one of THE best nites of my life so far....and yeah we saw them a couple days later in seattle

Oh my god, people still buy this! Metallica's "growth" over the years just proves that people will buy into anything as long as it still seems cool. Just cause its Metallica people totally bought into the bllues-country thing they did in the 90's, weren't we about thrash? I'm sorry but you people are easily bought, might as well go out and buy a Garth Brooks cd.
Kickflip_Burrito
11-04-2004, 09:27 AM
Shut up, Metallica in the 90's was still good, just not metal. It was different and they wanted to expand their musical accomplishments.
If they really cared about 'looking cool', then they wouldn't have sued Napster would they.

Actually heres what i think. Since i know alot about metallca il tell you guys. Metallica was formed by James and Lars. They wrote hit the lights together before Dave came in and before they had Ron. Hit the lights was pretty thrash right. If you actually buy Kill 'em All the only songs Dave even took part in were Horsemen, Jump in the Fire, Phantom Lord and Metal Militia. I think Metallica's sound is based on James's ideas. All that about James saying he's using Dave's ideas is bull.

Leper Messiah was written by Dave?? I don't believe that. What I heard from Dave, was that Leper Messiah uses HIS spider chords...which he invented but he did not say anything about writing the song.
And Sabian...I didn't mean that writing as in lyrics and music...stupid me...what I meant was the "writing style/font/word art" used for the Megadeth logo on the front of their CDs.

I dont get it why not many people like st. anger? If it's because of unique drums, then it's not a problem because uniqueness is good. If you say it's not considered music, you need to get a head check. It's an awesome song. There is much much much worse music in the world today, st anger is one of the best in today's music industry. But I would agree it doesnt compare as good with other metallica's songs.

No Im saying if you give St anger a chance, it's a pretty **** good song. Most people get turned off with those drums, (I did too) but later I got used to it.
I guess trash can is a better way to describe those drums than uniqueness. Is there a reason they used those drums instead of something more normal?

Because Lars is a horrible drummer.
Well, I gave it a chance, and I found it crappy. I was very open minded going into it.
I remember watching TV, hearing that they were going to play the new Metallica song, getting excited, grabbing a beer/chips, relaxing, wide eyed and open minded, and getting about four seconds into it before I said out loud "WHAT THE **** IS THIS CRAP?!"
That's just me though, some people may like odd percussion.

What kills St. Anger was the horrible songs. I mean don't get me wrong, there are some good lyrics, but not down the tracklist like on The Black Album. There is three maybe four songs on there that are solid, and would sound great without the annoying trashcan (anyone who has heard SKOM performed live should agree).
Some Kind Of Monster, St. Anger (solid, would be good if the song didn't stop and start), Unnamed Feeling. Ok 3 songs, with Shoot Me Again and Frantic with a mention.

I can play tons really well on bass, probably For whom the bell tolls best, but its my own crazy show-offish version.
By the way, Metallica have written over 60 hours of new stuff on the road and are entering the studio around march to work on stuff...yay :thumb:

And in response to the earlier arguments about Cliffs finger style, he used up to all four fingers, and would use his index and little finger (like the metal horns thing '\m/') quite a bit...
Kirk did say in the film a number of times that Rob was the 1st to play with his fingers since Cliff (drawing attention to his fingerstyle, not the fact that he played with them) if you watch Cunning Stunts, Jason finger-plucks Seek And Destroy.

Rob Trujillo looks like Donkey Kong playing bass.
Erm, bump, bump, bump.

i only started playing last xmas so almost a year...not much time but i managed to learn rythm parts to Ride the lightning, Orion, for whom the bell tolls, trapped under ice and fade to black. working on learning master of puppets right now which i will then move on to one. my band is doing a show soon and we are hoping to play at least 10 metallica songs. our lead guitarist has the songs learned so it depends on me, looks like i got alot of work ahead of me...

But something about this last time was so moving... It was in Nashville...And it was so ****ing amazing... I was wandering, to anyone who has seen them this leg of the tour...has james said anyof things to you guys?
1. "You guys are in serious trouble...We are in a very good mood tonight"
2. " (Your city) YOU-KICK-AS S!!"
3. and lars saying "Nashville...We're ****ing coming back here to you!"
I was just hoping those few things werent something they said to everyone...Because it was a very warming feeling... Well, bottom line... Best dam show I'll ever see... (Until i see them again!)

Videos arent meant to be accurate, chances are Kirk was making it up, or its a clip from when he was playing a different part of the song... but yea, accuracy isnt necessary in videos, i mean Jason keeps plucking the 5th string in the same song.. which isnt necessary to play the song.
Plus if it sounds right...so what? :smash:
Metallica rocks. My favriot albums by them are Master of Puppets, and S&M. I love all their other albums too. I didn't care for St.Anger much, but I respect that they wanted to do a different style of music. Its always fun to play around with different styles. I hope they go back in their old style of music though, with standard tunning, guitar solos, and great music.

speaking of standard tuning and metallica, how many songs do they that either aren't in normal tuning or out of E key???

Most of the Load songs are tuned to Eflat. The God That Failed is also to Eflat. St Anger songs are in DropC. The Thing That Should Not Be is in DropD. I Disappear and No Leaf Clover are to Eflat, and -Human is DropDflat. Think that's about it, discounting covers of course.

Ok, I was reading all the sleeves of my CDs, because I really don't have a life. Anyways, I was looking through the Garage Inc. booklet, and I was suprised at how many of my favourite bands are also listed as influences in Metallica's music.
So, my suggestion is that everyone check out at least one of the bands in the Garage Inc. booklet, and then post back here what you thought of them. This will give us a really good outlook on Metallica's growth and style. If you guys are too lazy to look through the Garage Inc. booklet, I'll post the bands mentioned in it later on today.

your guitar part came close, but small details of it are wrong. I have the actual guitar pro tab of it, and if you want i can post the midi file also, but heres what it should be 100%. play your pick near the end of string to give it a real treble-y effect.

hey i have been hearing stuff about godsmack playing for about half the show with metallica and that kinda sucks because i hate godsmack.
so for you people that have seen the metallica/godsmack show, please answer these questions
1. Does godsmack play for half of the show?
2. How many times have you seen metallica?
3. What songs do they play for sure, every time?
4. Im gonna see the godsmack/metallica show on nov. 27 2004 at 7 30 pm
at the arrowhead pond in anaheim. have you been their?
5. If so, is that a good place to go for a concert?

if i post anything already said my bad I only read to page 10 sorry couldn't stand reading 300+ pages. so far this is what i think
St. Anger although nothing like Metallica is still good. Reason why the drums sound bad is they were recorded without mices Lars thought it sounded cool(pretty sure its true forgot where i heard it).
Fav. song- if I had to chose would be creeping death but i love anything before Black
Fav. Solo- Ride the Lightning but I still like Anesthesia(Pulling Teath) Rocks
Fav. Video- One love the strobe lights
A little history of how it started:
Lars and James got together and recorded a few songs with james at vocals, bass, and guitar and of coarse lars at drums. after that james got friend Ron McGovney to play bass and Mustaine to play guitar
picked up Burton in the bay area Mustaine fired Hammit picked up from Exodus Metallica was formed
The name was stolen by Lars. While helping his friend find a name for his band his friend suggested Metallica Lars liked it suggested another name for his friend and kept Metallica for himself
And thats all i have to say about that.

Well I already like Mercyful Fate. Misfits are awesome also

Wow....don't think i've ever seen worse english....anyway, i'd have to say The Unforgiven mostly because of the lyrics. I really don't think the lyrics in The Unforgiven II are good.

im sick and tired of all these metallica threads. i go on this site at least once a day and i always see a thread regarding metallica..........bottom line, they're done. and for the record they are not all that. you guys act like they are the godfather's of metal. they're sound is so generic. despite all these harsh words, i don't hate them. but i think they are so overrated.

Fade to Black was a much more personal song, and hence was sung with alot more passion.
I prefer Fade to Black.

I prefer Fade to Black. I think One is over-rated.
Except I hate One, but it really is overplayed, they should play 2xFade To Black at concerts instead of playing One :thumb:
But everyone here has good reasons.
Fade To Black is a much more personal song (I guess because we can all feel like that sometimes).

Master of Puppets: Battery, Master of Puppets, and Disposable Heroes
...And Justice for All: Harvester of Sorrow, Dyers Eve, and Eye of the Beholder
Metallica: Sad But True, the Unforgiven, Don't Tread on Me, and My Friend of Misery
Load: Until it Sleeps, King Nothing, and Bleeding Me
Re-Load: Carpe Diem Baby, Low Man's Lyric, Fixxxer, and the Memory Remains
Garage Inc.: Astronomy, Whiskey in the Jar, It's Electric, Am i Evil?, So What, Die, Die My Darling
....and though St. Anger is my least favorite, i would have to say: Frantic, Some Kind of Monster(i love playing that on my bass) Invisible Kid, My World, and All Within my Hands....wheww...there it is

There's nothing wrong with St. Anger. Sure, compared to some of their previous albums it doesn't seem to measure up to their full potential. But musically it's a fairly good album, it's just different from the Metallica that we've all come to know and love.

i can say one thing, i've saw metallica twice this past summer, and i know that lar's drums do sound better than they did on the st. anger album, and rob's bass playing gives the newer songs they do play on the tour a very good plus

That's a good question. I really like One because of the way it changes moods, from the calm beginning to the intense ending. I also like it because it shows Metallica's knowledge, since this song was based on the book called Johnny Got His Gun. Although Fade to Black is a much more emotional song. I'll have to say it's a tie because I'm unable to make decisions.

Yeah. Unfortunately it just doesn't seems as "rough" as it did before. The St. Anger seemed more organized, or something, it's kind of hard to explain.

what metallica songs can you play? and what woyld be some good 'tallica songs for me to learn
i've been playing guitar for 10 months now self taught, and thanks to the help of the internet and guitar pro 4, i can play these songs:
GUITAR: one, fade to black (forgot that one earlier), enter sandman, dyers eve (minus beginning of solo), for whom the bell tolls, fight fire with fire (minus solo) master of puppets, call of ktulu (minus solo), unforgiven, james's part in ride the lightning and im trying to learn to live is to die right now. but maybe i can play a few more. i can actually play most of anesthesia by cliff on my guitar
BASS: mop........ fade to black....... one and enter sandman. most of for whom the bell tolls....... actually i can play all the songs jason wrote mostly, but any song that cliff wrote takes a while
DRUMS: All songs except ones that use double bass ex one or dyers eve (i can't kick with 2 legs too fast yet).
i'd say im doing pretty well so far.

i like jason's bass solos he does on the dvd's, though a good majority of them are medleys, like on live sh*t, san diego, he does the My Friend of Misery line, then goes crazy into that fast thing he does, then goes into the bass solo of orion and etc...then on Cunning Stunts, that bass/guitar doodle, he does that little solo of his to start with, then my friend of misery, then kirk joins in, then they go into the intro of Sanitarium, then jump into Nothing Else Matters...but basically "My Friend of Misery" is his best work, Cliff's stuff was a lot better, thats a no brainer, but Jason had his great moments

11-17-2004, 03:31 PM
on bass i mostly learn Cliff songs, isn't much to Jason songs, i like My Friend of Misery, King Nothing, God That Failed, and Devil's Dance of Jason's, thats about all the exciting songs with Jason to play on bass all with Cliff are fun fun fun

And Justice for All, Kill em all, Master of Puppets. Anyone of those.
i liked metallica's older stuff better than there new (who doesn't?), but my favorite song out of all would be master of puppets.
i like how it goes from there normal stuff in that song, to nice and soft and slow, then to unique solo's
i also like enter sandman, its a preety well balanced song.
lets try to keep this thread alive
hey liketoplaydrums10111 i totally agree with u about the old stuff better. I really like the ride the lightning album. The only thing i dont like about kill em all is its sort of more hardrockish than the heavy ****. i just started playing the guitar and enter sandman was the first thing i learned how to play. all of it. even the solo. my favourite song is probably puppetz as well. i just figured out the solo :thumb:
