ok i found out that lars ulrich isnt the guitarist but why do people say hes the drummer if its this dude
http://www.metallicaworld.co.uk/images/early/early30.jpg
people say lars has brown hair but the drummer doesnt have brown hair
so that means lars is either the bassist or singer
YOURE RIGHT!!! if you have garage inc., look at the drummer. That's lars.I think thats a picture of hetfield F***ing around though.

First off, great thread! I don't go to the forums much but when i saw this one i had to check it out. I love all different kinds of music from reggae to Beethoven but Metallica is my favorite by far. They inspired me to start playing guitar. My best friend introduced me to them when I was 8 yrs old, a little after Justice came out, and I've been a die-hard fan ever since. I too, am one of the unfortunates to have never seen them live, and I've tried so hard to do it. My best chance was last year in Seattle, but I joined the air force and my entry date was moved up so i couldn't see them. Now i'm in korea, and next year i'll be in italy so i may have a little trouble seeing them any time soon which so bums me out. to the others out there that haven't been to a live show i greatly recommend getting the Live Sh*t and Cunning Stunts sets, it's probably as close as you can get without actually being there. Again, awesome thread, and ROCK ON!!!!

Yep, that's James. If you check out the San Diego concert in the Live Sh*t set, James and Lars have kind of a drum duet.

hmm you didnt like master of puppets? i thought i was pretty good because they stopped playing the whole song around 93. if you've seen the other live dvd's ,except the cliff em all and 89 show on live **** binge and purge, they just stop at the master master....and then it draines out and it supposed to go to the little interlude and then the twin guitar solo. but, on the S&M they actually do the whole song witch i thought was great. refreshing! i also enjoyed that no leaf clover song. the orchastra really brought out the power of it.

Metallica are finished. Kill em all they were one of the best new bands around. It was the start of a new genre, Thrash/Speed Metal. Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets are some of the best metal albums of all time, if not in any genre. After the black album they were the biggest hting in rock/metal. *STOP EVERYTHING*. in 1992 metallica are on the road to being one of the best bands of all time. After load/reload, metallica are continuing this line. Experimentation is always good. Metallica STILL are on the road to being one of the best bands of all time.
At this point everything goes wrong for them. Their bassist quits. james is in rehab. They release two safe bet albums, S&M and garage inc (the cover one). Then they try to return to their former glory. They promised an album as good as the 80's ones. If they had pulled it off, they would have been hands down one of the best bands of all time. BUT instead they scrap the solos and make a mistake with production (that crappy snare).
They may still redeem themselves though. A few more excellent albums may make up for St. Anger.

No, not at all.
The Black Album was the defining point in their career when theyd "sold out", as most put it.
Load and Reload werent accepted well at all, infact they lost a lot of their hardcore fanbase.
Jason leaving wasnt bad for them because he was hindering their progress because to be frank, they hated him.
The "safe bet" albums, as you put it, werent that way at all; Metallica and a Symphony was greeted by cynical reviews and sharp looks, then their only release in many years was just covers .. quite a few of which were done 10 years previous. Both these albums werent received very well either.

Its on Kill 'em All and its called (Anesthisia)- Pulling Teeth. Just cool to see a whole song devoted to the most influential member of Metallica ( he died in a crash ) and i'm sure if he were still alive he'd straighten out the "NEW" Metallica.

My favorite guitar solo by metallica (of all time that is) is the first guitar solo in The 4 horsemen. It's perfect, it's starts of a little slow then it picks up speed, then it drops kicks u in the nuts and slowly walks away. Complete awesomeness, sometimes i wish I played guitar instead of bass just to play them. I enjoy playin Orion and My friend of Misery, good bass parts.

u must be a very onesided music listener. because 1 yes st. anger was easily the worst album put out by metallica BUT it does appeal to some ppl. not me in particular but to many who like really thick crunchy sounds and just like to make a c**pload of noise my freind. ALSO "freind" if u did follow metallica then u would know that after teh release of re-load kirk james and lars all said they were tired of showing off and just wanted to play the stuff they loved. metallica doesnt want to appeal to fans it really just wants to appeal to itself if you didnt know that. if metallica had 0% fan support then they would most likely be playing still. metallica is a lifestyle either know about it or shut ur mouth. thank you have a nice day :D

I myself was a little disappointed with St. Anger, but after reading a couple interviews from James and Kirk, I at least understand it a little better now. I thought that those that did the mixing and mastering really let the band down, but James explained that they didn't want it to sound like a typical recorded album. Even the horrible snare sound was chosen to try to get a really raw feel out of it. James said that they did the minimum amount of production on it to make it seem more of a garage-band, demo-tape type of thing. And with the solos, Kirk said that he was feeling like they're songs were getting stagnant with how they were organized, and James and Lars finally let him have a little more voice with the entire song instead of just telling him that they wanted a solo at a certain spot, which is what they used to do. So instead of just writing solos like he's done the last two decades (with the exception of a few songs here and there) he wrote second guitar parts that complimented and intertwined with James' parts instead of just playing along with the main rhythm. I'm not sure doing a whole album like that was such a great idea, but who knows, if their next album is spectacular people may look back at St. Anger and praise it for being such a bold risk. Besides, so many people say that they sold out after the black album, or even that the black album was selling out, but what type of band is really a sell-out, one that tries different things and plays what it wants to, or one that plays the same thing all the time just because it's what the fans want to hear?
TemperamentalGoat

So it may have been a nice risky move to do that for half an album, or even 3/4ths of it, but the WHOLE thing? EVERY song? That's just snuffing the fans. St Anger is a royal piece of trash.

Suppose St.Anger did have solos, would it still suck?.....I think even if there were solos on the album that it would still be pretty bad because: songs are too redundant even with a solo, Vocals are hurt'n, production, and Lars. However, it would be tough to judge that because sometimes a bad song is made up by its solo. What do you think?

Metallica were and still are gr8
but for me they don't classify as a song writing band
on every album theres at least 3 classics i find with metallica, but they've never really tryed to change (which is cool) (unless st.anger is there idea of changing)
but they've basically re-copied riffs every now and then and chuck old songs together to make new ones.
I mean when i buy a new metallica album, i know theres gonna' be songs i like, but i also know that it's not going to be anything new/special
But metallica stay close to my heart, without them there wouldn't be alot of bands around today

1. yes, dave did get fired around kill em all (i dunno exact time). the two songs he wrote that arent on kill em all are "ride the lightning" and "call of the ktulu" which are on the ride the lightning album. i guess metallica put them on ride the lightning to make him happy, after what happened.
2. kill em all used to have "am i evil" and "blitzkrieg" as bonus tracks on it. they are now on garage days inc like all the other covers they have done.

Their shows are f***ing awesome! They do play two... maybe three songs off of St. Anger, but they play a bunch of their good stuff as well. They play One, Master of Puppets, Battery, Nothing Else Matters and a few others. Don't worry about St. Anger, though. The songs are MUCH better live.

wow, that's tough. breadfan is cool, and has some kick@ss transitions in it, but turn the page was such a classic even before metallica rocked it the way they do (which makes it even better). i think metallica really did both of those songs justice with their renditions.

Metallica ****in rocks live!!! I saw my first Metallica concert Mon 8/30, and even got the live concert recording from livemetallica.com
Lemme tell you what it took to get to this momentus day:
10 yrs of being a Metallica fan (my brother brought the black album home from college on tape, and I have been hooked ever since)
4 chances since then to see Metallica
2 times of that not having a job or enough money to go
1 time that it was a school night, and also above...
$186.75 in tickets for myself, my wife and my best friend
1 pissed off rant at the ticketmaster lady when two weeks after I got my balcony seats, 2000 more floor seats opened up.
5 months of waiting for the date to arrive, counting down every minute of every day till showtime
8 gallons of gas for the round trip and some cruising in Ames (a total of 103.3 miles, which is the number of the radio station that presented the show)
4 hours before showtime when we left the house to get the **** outta dodge and go see this kick *** show
20 seconds after the showtime slated to start that Godsmack took the stage
45 minutes of Godsmack
20 mins of downtime between bands
20 mins till 9pm that Metallica took the stage and rocked my ****in *** so hard my neck still hurts to this day!
1 satisfied Metallica fan:
Seeing that the best ****in band in the world who can work the crowd like none other and keeping them on their feet for two hours and 18 minutes...and that they can still rock the ****in world, even being in their 40s: priceless!
that being said, Metallica are worth every ****in penny, it was the greatest experience I have ever had being at a live concert, it hurt to stand on my feet for that long, but I didnt care, that was a great religious experience...
now that I have said all of that, I leave you to your lives
and say that Metallica kick ****in ***! :smash: :chug:

Besides, so many people say that they sold out after the black album, or even that the black album was selling out, but what type of band is really a sell-out, one that tries different things and plays what it wants to, or one that plays the same thing all the time just because it's what the fans want to hear?
amen ppl cant appreciate what they are doing which is not much but its different and i kinda like st anger its ok compared to other band music like slipknot and all that nu metal crap

If you havent relised nu-metal has kept metal going over the last 10 years, Nu-metal bands may not be as talented as bands like Iron Maiden and Metallica but they deserve credit for keeping metal alive, Metallicas new material from94 onwards was **** and people kept on listening because of the Nu-metal bands, when i say nu-metal bands im talking KoRn and stuff, the only problem with nu-metal is its to easy to write and eventually it gets to to the stage where it all sounds the same.
If Nu-Metal is **** why did Metallica turn that way?

that wasnt daves stuff he says in an interview that it was the bands music not his own
exactly, THANK YOU! people keep calling it "Dave's stuff" but they don't seem to notice the two (sometimes three) other names along with his. do you really think that they wouldn't use material that the band created just because he had a hand in it. you don't even know how much he really contributed to the song. they created the songs as metallica so they put them on metallica albums, the fact that he was no longer in the band at the time they released them is a different matter. and actually, kirk had a hand as well in creating many of the solos that you hear on the recorded Kill 'Em All. in the book, "The Art of Kirk Hammett," kirk says that overall "90% of the guitar solos on there were all my (Hammett's) licks." he was told that just to stay consistent with the demo that he should start out the solo the same way dave did but then go from there. yet kirk doesn't even get his name mentioned in the credits of any of the songs on that album. now don't get me wrong, i think dave is awesome and that megadeth is a great band, but i'm kinda sick of hearing about it. when you talk about dave and metallica there's only so much you can say, and i think it's already been said many times. this is a metallica thread, if you want to talk more about dave go to a megadeth thread. let us just say that dave WAS on metallica in their early years, he HELPED write some killer songs for metallica, the band felt that it would be better if he wasn't in metallica anymore, now he writes killer songs for megadeth. good for him, good for megadeth, now back to metallica...

I'm sure he gets something, although, I doubt its very much. He also get some credit for the songs he helped write on the old albums.

If Nu-Metal is **** why did Metallica turn that way?

some one give me a double review (in this thread) or RTL and MOP, comparing the two.
Well both albums are well composed, with each song on the album/s being placed in such a perfect way.
Both albums start off with perfect intro songs (Fight Fire With Fire (RTL) Battery (MOP))
Then go into the cover songs, perfect composition.
3rd song is a heavy bass/rum song (For Whom The Ball Tolls (RTL) The Thing That Should Not Be (MOP))
4th song is a mellow chilled back song, again perfect placement, after a heavy song sitting back and enjoying a slow Metal song is great.
Both songs (Fade To Black (RTL) and Welcome Home (MOP) start off with a slow intro, and finish heavy, with Fade To Black being the better of the two, although Sanitarium is also a great song).
After the chilled back songs it's like "**** it, well take them back to heavy!" and they bring in some greats, like Trapped Under Ice (RTL) and Disposable Heroes (MOP) both songs have great guitaring and constant/consistent drumming.
6th song on each album is similar to the 5th being great guitar with nice guitaring/drumming duets, Escape (RTL) and Leper Messiah (MOP).
7th song/s are weird, on RTL it's Creeping Death, and you can definately see why it's a Live show favourite, brutal guitaring, from both James and Kirk, and perfectly composed drumming from Lars.
#7 on MOP is the great Orion, beautiful symphonic bass from Cliff, perfectly smooth guitar just flows over with the bass, the drumming, while not being a big part of the song, adds an extra dimension to the song, all this together definately make one of the, if not the, best instrumental song ever.
8th song on RTL is the dark and haunting The Call of The Ktulu, the title pretty much sums the song up well, it's dark, it's long, and it's amazing, from the very first guitar strum, to the final drum beat it drags the listenner in, and warps them, it has a weird meldoic feel to it, I can't stop listenning to this song, even though it's almost 9 minutes long, it wouldn't have been the same if they made it shorter, one of the best pieces of work from this band.
#8 on MOP is Damage Inc. You really appreciate Cliff's bass work on this song, the roar of the intro can only be Cliff Burton's masterful bass work.
It breaks into some sweet drumming.
You can see why Metallica dominated this genre in the 80s.
These two albums are probably the best work Metallica has ever done, and ever will do.
Ride The Lightning - 10/10 best album. EVER. Nothing comes close (Even though it was done before, in my opinion everyone on it except for Cliff, sounds like they are more experienced then in the follow album Master of Puppets).
Master of Puppets - 10/10 another great album. Technically the best album Metallica have produced (Well ias far as I know :P), although doesn't sound quite as full as Ride The Lightning.
If you enjoy Metal, and haven't got either of these two albums. What the **** are you doing with your life?!

I completely agree, but from the songs, he listed, St. Anger doesn't even sound like the same band. I like the CD as well and too many people bash on it. I think it has some quirks here and there, but overall it's a good album. The Unnamed feeling is one of my favorites on the CD along with All Within My Hands and Sweet Amber.

S&M is an unbelievable album. After listening to that for a while, the original versions of the songs seem a little dry(Still good though). My favorite tracks on there are:
-Devil's Dance-The orchestra just adds a whole new level of melodrama to the song. I love it.
-No Leaf Clover-This song just plain out kicks *** in the S&M album.
-Master of Puppets-The orchestra just adds on to an already kick-*** song.
