This whole Mudvayne topic has got me thinking... am I the only one tired of bands misspelling their names to draw attention to themselves. I mean, it was cool with led zeppelin and lynyrd skynyrd, but it's just being overdone if you ask me. I also realized that every band at summer sanitarium besides metallica had this...

Linkin Park
Mudvayne
Limp Bizkit
Deftones

It's not rebellious or clever anymore, if it's gonna be done, make it mean something.

Blackened riffs took 20 min-ish but the solo was frustrating because the tapping is hard to nail perfectly. The solo in total took about 2 hours.

Yeah i found it harder than Master of Puppets; that took me about 30 minutes to get to an ok level. I'd already practised my pinky alot so that helped loads.

I'd agree with that. If Metallica ever let one of it's bass players (Cliff, Jason, Rob) turn up the amp so that they could be heard with the rest of the music I think that a lot of people would find that they did some supreme work.

st anger lol wot a joke its like they tried to make a bad album but were still bad at it
i no they have other not so good albums such as "garage inc." an "load" and "reload" but this is just painful to listen to
its such a bad album u can tell its gonna b **** just from the name
their old stuff kikss *** but since they have made the black album they have started to go bad.
"kill em all" "ride the lightning" and "justice for all"
blatantly three of the best albums of all time

kirk_wylde
12-10-2003, 01:12 PM
Hmm justice I have to question a bit... Load and reload weren't terrible they have a fair few really good songs between them. Eg. Fuel, Ain't my bitch ect.
And I personally think that St. anger wasn't meant to be a propper album ( in a recent interview they said that the original new album stuff was quite black albumy before all the rehab) So I think that St. anger was just a way for James ect. to let out all the angst from napster, rehab, jason ect. .. Well thats my theory at least.

OK, I haven't had the time to read the previous 22 pages (I looked at the first one or two), so ignore me if these have been mentioned:

1) Who here's got the Cliff 'Em All DVD? I love it so much...
2) Am I the only person that can see a huge difference between KEA and RTL, even though they're both Thrash Metal? I love both of them, its just I don't find some of their stuff from that era (or at all...) very fast. Unless we go and talk about when they play live. :)

in response to some quote about good songs, too lazy to find it.

Right now my favorite song is Battery. Obviously im a drummer, not a dummer (my bad). It has amazing fills and the double bass is crazy throught the whole song. i play guitar too, but im not very good at it. Master of Puppets has awesome guitar stuff thats not too hard, but the bridge sounds awesome.

Well..... I think that MetallicA did a major stepdown
from the other albums. Metallica have (or used to have) a great
trademark and it made them special.
But now (sad to say) they are beginning to sound like
nu-metal. But I can't complain; they have had 7 strong albums

I can play most Metallica stuff (without solo's usually) after trying for an hour, but here's what I actually know:
1) Master Of Puppets (Yes, ALL of it)
2) Sanitarium (The first minute or so, I drifted off after that)
3) No Remorse (Can't find TAB for the solo)
4) Four Horsemen (Never bothered with solo)
5) Seek & Destroy (Never bothered with solo)
6) Sandman (Again, I've never really wanted to bother with the solo)
7) Leper Messiah \m/
8) One (All)
9) For Whom The Bell Tolls
10) Blackened
...you get the idea...

1. most of Hit the Lights
2. Four Horsemen
3.Seek and Destroy
4.Metal Militia
5.Whiplash
6.Fade to Black
7.Creeping Death
8. Master of Puppets but i screw up alot
9.Sanitarium
10.Leper Messiah
11.Blackened
12...and justice for all
13.One
14.Shortest straw
15.Enter Sandman
16.Of Wolf and Man

kirk_wylde

Whilst were on the subject I can play:

1.One (all of it including fast taping solo)
2.Master of puppets (all too speedish but strugling on main solo)
3.For whom the bell tolls (appart from one little bit)
4.fade to black (haven't tried last solo yet)
5.Nothing else matters (pretty easy one)
6.Seek and destroy (I don't play exact notes on solo but sound adlibbed neway)
7.Sad but true (love the solo on this)
8.My world (oddly I quite like this St. Anger track)
9.Sanitarium (not completely)

Possibly some others can't think right now

Kill 'em All is fast as hell, but in my opinion it's vastly inferior to the rest of their old stuff. A lot of it almost has a melodic punk sound to it, as far as the vocals go. Once Lightning hit that's when Metallica found who they were. They combined speed with a seriousness and intensity that wasn't to be seen on Kill 'em All.

There are a couple of brilliant songs on black album but Some I just don't like at all

Why is Justice so low?

^ That one has to grow on you... for me anyway. And Justice at first was awful to me. The only song i liked was one. But now i love blackened, one, dyer's eve, To live is to die, and i think that middle section of Freyed Ends of Sanity that surrounds the solo is some of the coolest set of riffs ever.

Today, Metallica sucks. Everything from Kill 'Em All to ..And Justice For All is amazing. The black album is also good, but the times when they were doing their own thing were great.

I kinda went a little too heavy on the reverb...and i ****ed up the middle (fast section) at the time when i recorded it. Now I can play it with NO problems!

I used my Gibson Gothic Explorer Custom for that. Its got a set of EMG 85 and EMG 81's. Its got skull knobs for the volume and tone controls, and I changed the strap clip holder to where u see it in the picture. I think the guitar is much better balanced there instead of the usual on the back of the guitar.

I set the reverb about 3/4, and used delay had about half effect speed and the delay feedback at about 1/4.

Thanks for the nice comment. I should post the master of puppets final solo sometime soon. I just dont got time to record the ****er! I will tho, sometime in the near future.

by the way...check out my guitars that I have.

The 2rd guitar down, the piece of **** epiphone les paul speical...ya...thats wayy different now, I refinished it. It got a multicolored paint job on it. The colorshifting paint. its really cool lookin.

ne ways as i read thru this i get lots of history questions so ill sum it up in a tru metali-fans words

back in the day lars had an ad the paper for someone to rock with and james called him up and he said he had a band name but he didnt so lars stole one from someone else (but i dont member who) and he started w/ mustaine (who is now in megadeth for all u ultra noobies) and for bass they had james roomate i believe, ron mcgoveny take up bass.
well than around came kill em all but b4 they recorded that they got rid of mustaine and mcgoveny for burton on bass and kirk hammet than they recoreded kill em all and ride the lightning but they werent too big, when they did master of puppets it got big. they started touring w/ ozzy and cliff burton (who was the #1 reason the band didnt die) was killed in a car crash
and than they went back to the begging were they got jason newstead as there new bassist. and they recorded there best album ...and justice for all (there first music video came out for one than)
than they did black album and they sold like an assload of coppies (assload=x, x=about 15 million)ne ways they took 5 years off cuz they were metally f***ed up
than they made load and kirk hammet got his famous esp mummy guitar and they went on tour for sum time
garage days is an entire album of covers (der) but ne ways they did that cuz of there immense success and did s&m w/ the sanfrancisco symphony
than they did st. gay and metallica apealed to the white trash not just the metal-head

send replies on this!

interesting...Kirk comments about the lack of guitar solos on St. Anger
METALLICA's 'Dirty Window' Now Features A Guitar Solo: Audio Available - Dec. 11, 2003

METALLICA performed a special version of the "St. Anger" track "Dirty Window" — complete with a guitar solo from Kirk Hammett — during their gig at Palais Omnisports de Bercy in Paris, France on Tuesday (Dec. 9). Check out the live recording in MP3 format at this location. A high-quality audio clip featuring just the guitar solo can be downloaded here.

When asked about the lack of guitar solos on "St. Anger" during an interview with Canada's Chart magazine in September, Hammett said, "I've served our fans well in that department. It feels like I've played a million guitar solos over the past 20 years. If they don't get a few on this album, they're gonna survive. To me the bottom line is that these songs are so dense and so musical, where the **** do you begin putting in the guitar solos? There were many problems with solos. Where do they fit? Do they compromise the sound of four guys playing in a room spontaneously? Do they compromise the 'band statement'? This was supposed to be about four guys working together musically, so that's what it called for. I was fine with it. I know I can play a solo, the fans know I can. If you need them, come see us live, I'm playing a million ****in' solos! Gimme a break!"

gots a live version of Dirty Window with a solo..anyway, more stuff..later?

Tim, about ALL of your information is wrong...

1) Lars placed an ad in an LA based magazine called Recycler. James replied, they jammed once, but nothing happened. Also, Lars and a friend had been wanting to start a NWOBHM fanzine for a while, so one day they were sitting around thinking of possible names. Lars' friend suggested 'Metallica', Lars quickly said it was terrible, and thought of another name.

2) Time passed, Lars had a space on Metal Massacre Volume 1 for his band, but he didn't have a band at the time, so he called James and Lloyd Grant, (the former taking Vocals, Rhythm Guitar and Bass; the latter taking Lead Guitar).

3) Dave Mustaine is ex-Megadeth, they broke up...

If your reffering to seek solo then yeah I was off I just wanted an opinion whether it was good for an improvised alternative (thanks for being considerate unlike jon 3003 who you can tell is a kid who only pays guitar because it makes him "cool")

I don't know if anybody else feels this way (probably not, considering that this is Metallica thread) but doesn't Metallica's music seem kinda cold and unemotional. So in a way metal does describe it pretty well. Theres just solo after solo and every solo seems just to be some kinda outlet for Kirk Hammet to show how fast he can play. The only solo I like from them is the I Dissapear one, because it has some kinda of melody to it.

Someone was talking to me about why I thought Jimi Hendrix was better then Metallica, better then Kirk Hammet more specifcally. "You can barely comprehend what he's playing. The tunes aren't hard enough. He's not moving that fast." Is he what he said regarding Jimi. I replied saying that Jimi and the Experience did more then jsut play the instruments, they had more then just technical skill which is what seems that people think is the only way you can be good at an instrument. Jimi played with his instrument and I can't seem to see more then a band who has badass technical skill in Metallica.

Again, this is just my opinion, and I figured it would open up some discussion, if not some idiots telling me I'm a "faggot" for saying it. Oh yeah, Jimi was just an example I used so don't go all ape**** on me and say "this isn't a jimi hendrix forum you ****ing queer, go to the ****ty guitar forums to write that"

Thanks:)

i agree with ya uglyugmo, metallica music does sound unemotional in a lot of their songs, but then again theres a lot i can relate to. And, yeah Jimi is a better guitarist then kirk anyday.

every1 always blasts st.anger for being the biggest bunch of **** ever but its actually a good album..if it was released by the average metal band then every1 would think it was a good album..for those people who have actually listened to it beyond just the title track they would know there are actually some good songs on it and if they had thrown in some solos they oculd be really amazing songs (exmaple. invisible kid, some kind of moster, unamed feeling, frantic)
kill em all is by far there best album they have ever made, it has the craziest solos, the most complex riffs and the most perfect structure out of any album they have ever made.it shows their raw talent and doesnt use all their processed crappy sounds of today...its them using their old-skool v's and original mesa amps = a classic raw sound.
memeber wise..james is the most talented memeber by far, he can take the most credit for every song..hes an unbeleivable rythmn guitarist, and can play drums 1000x better than lars can

I'd say Master of Puppets is there best album structurally. Just sounds a lot smoother... I dunno... just me, maybe.

And actually, if you watch the footage from Cliff Em All... you can see that back in the day, when they still weren't all that big yet, that they used Marshalls, and not Mesa's, yet. And not to mention they had a different sound on each album.

But yea, I think St. Anger is a really good album.. I think they could've done a hell of a lot better, but I still like it. Hey, I bought it, and I'm not pissed off about it (if you're like me, you get pissed off when you buy a bad cd)..

I don't know....for me its the lack of Guitar solos and the fact that the Riffs aren't inventive enough to warrent songs being over 3 minutes long.

Plus I think everyone was expected a crazy album since they said they were "going back to their roots"

But hey.....if you like it, you like it!

Lars and a friend were thinking of names for a NWOBHM magazine that they were going to start. Lars' friend suggested Metallica, Lars said it was terrible and thought of another one.

hi , i read thru the first 3 pages and then got bored. you were talkin about how St. anger was dissapointing. well, the first metallica song i heard was that album. i liked it and asked ma m8s for good songs. they gave me:

Seek&Destroy
MoP
For whom the bell tolls
fuel
fade to black
purify
one

now i liked them even more but i still like st. anger .
the point and conclusion is that metallica fans are so used to them producing excellent songs that when they make a album which is good/average that they think it is crap.

I don't see why people get pissed when Metallica will skip a song or something. They've got an arsenal of 10 records and I think they'd want to touch on all of them. So a three hour set will only consist of a few songs from each album, right?

My favourites
Kill 'em all- Seek & Destroy (or no remorse)
Ride the lightning - tie between fade to black and creeping death
Master of puppets- Master of puppets or Sanitarium
And justice for all - One
Metallica (black album)- Nothing else matters
Load- Hero of the day
Re-Load- Unforgiven II
Garage inc. sabbara cadabara (first disk) Blitzkreeg (seccond disk)
S&M- No leaf clover (out of the two new ones)
St. Anger - If I HAD to pick one My world

Do they play Blackened? I'm really looking forward to that this Saturday (To answer Kickflip's question), but doubt they'll play it.

My lovely list of songs I really want them to play but doubt they will:
1) Blackened
2) No Remorse
3) Leper Messiah
4) Pulling Teeth ;)
5) Whiplash

My list of songs I really hope they'll play, and I'm guessing they will play:
1) Master Of Puppets
2) Enter Sandman
3) KEA/RTL Medley - Seek and destroy
For Whom The Bell Tolls
The Four Horsemen
Fight Fire With Fire
4) One

Last but not least, my favourite 3 songs from Kill Em All
1) No Remose
2) Four Horsemen
3) Seek And Destroy

As I was studying for finals, I decided to pop Metallica's Load and Reload albums in.

I've always liked the 2 cds, load way more than Reload, but GOD **** IT, BOTH CD's rock! I really think that people should take em for the musical quality, and forget that even though they arent pure metal, they still rock and rock HARD.

My favs from Load:

King Nothing (LOVE THE GUITAR INTRO! HEAVY **** AND FUN AS HELL TO PLAY)

Hero Of The Day

Mama Said (beautiful song)

Bleeding Me - (Amazing song, Fun to play, LEARN IT)

The Outlaw Torn (what an amazing song)

From Reload:

Devil's Dance

The Unforgiven II (i used to not like this song, but sheez, after listening to it...i realized its **** beautiful)

Low Mans Lyric ( I cant help but sing along with the song)

The Memory Remains (I love the song, but i dunno about the Maryanne Faithful na na na part)

Fixxer - (amazing song, has one of the coolest intro riffs I have heard, VERY Powerful song)

-------------
Please before I get flamed for this, WHICH I SHOULDNT GET, because there are good *** CD's, give some of the songs a listen will ya.

I agree the Load/Re-Load albums were really good some of the songs are a bit oddd like low mans lyric but most are top notch
And I agree people should stop camparing load with the earlier stuff
Earlier stuff is thrash/heavy metal and Load/Re-Load are just Hard rock they are meant to be totally different

Everyone hates St. Anger but if you think about it is pretty good compared to the rest of the stuff they have now
true its not better then the rest of the 80's rock but its pretty good compared to the songs they have now

Are they worth the money?

IMO, yeah they are.

I like Kirks experimental side. Its really cool. They are good quality cds. But if your expecting thrash or metal, then don't bother.

I wouldn't go saying that. A lot of their lyrics dig really deep and I think that that's good, it can bring the fans closer to them and them closer to the fans if you catch my drift. St. Anger wasn't all bad, it was just not what people had expected. So yea.
