i think bob rock is responsible for the decline of metallica.... he came in at the Black Album and so far in this thread everytime we get to the subject of St. Anger it always says that metallica went downhill after the Black Album.... any coincidences there? and i heard it was bob rock'sa idea to take all the solos outta St. Anger

cliffburtonrules
08-23-2004, 02:34 PM

Paranoidd
08-23-2004, 02:35 PM
I think that people should stop using Bob Rock as a scapegoat. You know, theres four guys in Metallica and one Bob Rock, and Bob Rock works for them...

And rap is great.

cliffburtonrules
08-23-2004, 02:39 PM
Well still i'm just saying things that i heard..... and i thought it was a coincidence that he started on the black album and then metallica went down...... and tru there r four guys but during st. anger there were only 3 and since bob rock did the bass parts im sure he had enough creative control but i dont know thats my opinion and im probably wrong too so whatever...

Paranoidd
08-23-2004, 02:46 PM
There are two ways to view the situation (in my opinion)

1) Bob Rock has no creative control, and any fault with the music lies with the band
2) Bob Rock has all the creative control, and the band are bunch of p'ussies for letting one guy completely 0wn them, however they are not responsible for their shyte music.

I agree with you...I have the DVD and well I thought that he was mostly responsible for the Black Album being as big as it is and gettin Metallica to that point because that is when he came into the pic with Metallica....when they were about to make that album...and Lars said...he came to us and said he had listened to us but we were missing something and we were like uh...excuse me...who the **** are you?!?....somethin like that....so I think he was involved with the Black Album...but well after that it does seem like they declined a little but then once it got to St. Anger...it was off the charts....I like every song on St. Anger...but alot of people dont...it also sounds better on the rehearsals DVD....like in Some Kinda Of Monster....on the album...it sounded like James got his part a little too perfect (sounded like it was wah or somethin....) but well...then it sounded a hell of a lot better on the rehearsals DVD....live feel or something to it

Yeah man, I hear you!
While I do like the more popular Metallica songs (Master of Puppets, Sanitarium, Ride The Lightning, Fade To Black, For Whom The Bell Tolls etc). I do also like their lesser know, or talked about stuff (I think Escape is a great song, in fact pretty much all of Ride The Lightning, and Master of Puppets), they knew how to produce an effective album, the perfect place for each song on both those albums.
Battery is such a well placed song, and the guitaring in that song is brutal, if you've ever seen it Live, you'll know how heavy it would be for James on guitar, yet they do it so well (Not saying it's not heavy for Kirk, and hell Newstead had to fill some pretty **** heavy boots, I think he did well).

Billboard.com is reporting that Elektra/Rhino Vinyl has set an October 26 release date for METALLICA's "Vinyl Box". The set will collect special editions of the heavy metal act's first four studio albums, plus the "Garage Days Re-Revisited" EP and the import-only "Creeping Death" picture disc.

The albums "Kill 'Em All", "Ride the Lightning", "Master of Puppets" and "...And Justice for All" have been expanded to double-vinyl sets on 180-gram audiophile vinyl with new gatefold jackets. "Vinyl Box" will be limited to 5,000 numbered copies and will carry a suggested retail price of $99.98.

Yeah man I know what you mean.

One song, I think would be... Argh, I can't even remember it's name, it's on Master Of Puppets and it's got the SWEETEST alternate picking. What's its name? But yeah, that's a song noone recognises and it's great writing. Lots of talent.
IMO, these are all the un-recognised Metallica songs:
-That one I dont' know the name of (number five on Master Of Puppets)
-...And Justice For All
-The Shortest Straw
-Harvestor Of Sorrow
-The Frayed Ends Of Insanity
-Holier Than Thou
-Through The Never
-Don't Tread On Me
-The God That Failed
-My Friend Of Misery
-The Struggle Within
-(I'll skip KEM, 'cause I don't know which are/aren't on that album)
-The Thing That Should Not Be
-Damage Inc.
-Fight Fire With Fire
-Trapped Under Ice (great song)
-Escape
-Creeping Death

There's probably more, but I'm tired.

I wish they played more of those songs *points* in concert :(.

Oh, have you noticed how they, like, NEVER play anything off ...And Justice any more? :(

I don't like that song, too much like Fade To Black, I mean props to writing it, but you can't really live off the same song (Although they did it with Load, god knows how..)

But yeah, I think ..And Justice is a pretty good album, although, not great, and hardly lives up to Master or Ride (And Kill 'em All is in a field of its own).

Yeah, I think Fade To Black is way better then One, but I didn't know they played it more... I've seen Fade To Black more times in concert than I've seen One.

Also, I agree with what you say about AJFA not living up to RTL and MOP, and yes, KEM is in a field of it's own.

(Oh yeah, I'm so kewl with my abbreviations!)

EDIT: Listening to Disposable Heroes now, ****! I swear to god that alternate picking (starts at 00:30) still gives me boners!

EDIT 2: I hope when I get my KH-202 (end of the year) the alternate picking sounds like that :D

Obviously Fade To Black is played more, it's like 6 years older!
They play them both at concerts I guess, but that's playing One too much.
They should open with the intro to Fade To Black (Instrumental, of course).
And close with the ending, the whole time not stopping playing their instruments and mixing the other songs in there too (As well as having Fade To Black (Full versiion) too), that would be an amazing concert.

Hmmmm I'm a vinylholic.

My car was written off yesterday as I got rear ended by some dumbass doing about 40 km/hr, and I had both my turntables in the back (about $1500 value). Luckily, they were unharmed. I didn't even turn off the motor, I just ran to see the turntables. I might have to purchase this set.

I'm still a fan of it, but I think some of the songs are too similar, and One is a horrible recreation of Fade To Black/Sanitarium.

Hate to ruin all of your days but um, Metallica sucks and doesn't deserve their own thread. Hell they don't deserve to be able to play guitar anymore. I've been listening to Metallica since 1986 and they have produced nothing but crap since 96. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

I remember Ride the Lightning and being blown away by it as well as Master of Puppets. I was able to tolerate the black album as well but they lost their nuts after Justice was released.

But hey, it's only my opinion and the negativity is geared toward newer metallica. Just disappointed that people think they need their own thread when there's nothing to say.

They got their own thread because there were way too many metallica threads, maybe you would know that if you read the first post.

Black - Reload IMO was them changing their direction with their music, if I recall a few of them did some serious music theory studying between the Black album and the Loads, maybe they felt that they wanted to try something different.

Now St. Anger, well of course it has been said 1000 times, WTF?

Just a cop out my friend. I have been a musician for a long time and I will tell you it was a lie to sell more CD's and to justify their sudden change (uh um selling out). This is the same old **** that new fans and the old fans that still wanted to be fans would say time and time again. They studied music and they wanted a change. Bull****! They changed to match the crap that was getting shoved down our throats on all the radio stations and MTV in hopes that they would win the hearts of the new kiddie and that hopefully most of the old fans would forgive them. They did it for cash and it was a business move. The good music went out the window and anyone that knows the whole story knows that.

Have you seen their live show recently? They play mostly pre black album songs. The show I went to, they only played 1 St. Anger song, 1 Load song, a few Black album songs, and the rest pre-black album. It shows that they still have their fans in mind.

Heres my take on the Load albums. Load was good but different, Reload was bad however. But I really think had they condensed the albums to just one album and selected the best songs for it, it would have turned out much better for them. Heres what I think the track listing should have been for the loads in this order:

1. Fuel
2. The Outlaw Torn
3. 2X4
4. The Unforgiven II
5. King Nothing
6. Prince Charming
7. Bleeding Me
8. Until It Sleeps
9. The Memory Remains
10. Hero of the Day
11. Ain't My Bitch
12. Thorn Within
13. Wasting My Hate
14. Fixxxer

Also, I think the album should have been titled differently, such as "The Outlaw Torn" or something like that, to keep consistent with the many albums they have that have the title track in the number 2 position. Anyways, I think they would have done much better with this but it is no where near as good as any of there previous albums.

Well their main influences are Iron Maiden, Judas preist, etc. Dave(indian guy) was in an Iron Maiden cover band and if I'm not mestaken, a Metallica cover band as well.

I love everything Metallica has written from the first note of Hit The Lights to the last note of All Within My Hands (espiaclly the kill part at the end of the song :)) I will never understand how people can say metallica sold out after the released St.Anger. That is the most mainstream unfreindly album out there and Metallica new it too. I like it all too.

im so glad to hear someone actually say they enjoyed st.anger! YAY!!!!! I do like all within my hands, unnamed feeling, and basically all the songs i know i said i only liked everyhting form kill'em all to garage days inc, but i actually took the time to lisitn to everytrack throughly. and they do rock!

I've heard them play solos for a few of the tracks off of St. Anger live in Dever. They weren't bad at all. Anyway St. Anger is a great album, it's just not the Metallica we were expecting.

I don't know if this is the truth, but listenning to St. Anger, their tuning sounds different? Almost like that of Korn? Why?!
They made standard tuning heavy, why'd they change it? So Kirk and James can do less work on their axes? I dunno.
St. Anger can be a good album, just rerecordered (What's with the drums?) with a couple of well placed solos in a few songs.

Hitroshimite
08-28-2004, 01:53 AM
They didn't use standard tuning on St. Anger. Most of that album is is Drop D 1 Full step down (low to high, CGCFAD).

Hate to ruin all of your days but um, Metallica sucks and doesn't deserve their own thread. Hell they don't deserve to be able to play guitar anymore. I've been listening to Metallica since 1986 and they have produced nothing but crap since 96*.

****, that whole thing was a ****ing joke. Not a single real metal band on the whole set. Avril Lavigne (not to mention such ****tards a s staind, korn, and shrimp dip****) has no buisnes covering Metallica songs. For ****s sake, thay can barely play their own. The whole thing was just embarrasing.

^^you cant have such high expectayions because you will never be satisfied...with any band. If you are waiting for an album to come out and you hype it up then it will usually fail your expectations when you get it. Thats what happened to st. anger (imo)because the media and everyone hyped it up to be just like MOP and we all know that didnt happen. Just dont set your standards too high

New album will be completely different. I doubt that they're going to bring back the AJFA or MOP you're all waiting for. In the same time, it won't be another St.Anger.

Metallica has always surprised us with unexpected things. That's what they do best. No matter which style they follow with each album, they manage to do great. That's what makes them one of the greatest bands in the earth.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
As for the new album again, I guess it's going to be more Rock/Hard Rock stuff. And as compared to you, I don't want them to play speed/trash again. 4 albums is more than enough for me. I expect from them some beautiful Hard Rock album.

End of passion play, crumbling away
I'm your source of self-destruction
Veins that pump with fear, sucking darkest clear
Leading on your death's construction

Taste me, you will see
More is all you need
You're dedicated to
How I'm killing you

Come crawling faster
Obey your master
Your life burns faster
Obey your master
Master

Master of puppets, I'm pulling your strings
Twisting your mind and smashing your dreams
Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
Just call my name, 'cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master
Just call my name, 'cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master

Needlework the way, never you betray
Life of death becoming clearer
Pain monopoly, ritual misery
Chop your breakfast on a mirror

Taste me you will see
More is all you need
You're dedicated to
How I'm killing you

Come crawling faster
Obey your master
Your life burns faster
Obey your master
Master

Master of puppets, I'm pulling your strings
Twisting your mind and smashing your dreams
Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
Just call my name, 'cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master
Just call my name, 'cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master

Master, master
Where's the dreams that I've been after?
Master, master
You promised only lies
Laughter, laughter
All I hear and see is laughter
Laughter, laughter
Laughing at my cries
Fix me

Hell is worth all that, natural habitat
Just a rhyme without a reason
Never-ending maze, drift on numbered days
Now your life is out of season

I will occupy
I will help you die
I will run through you
Now I rule you, too

Come crawling faster
Obey your master
Your life burns faster
Obey your master
Master

Master of puppets, I'm pulling your strings
Twisting your mind and smashing your dreams
Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
Just call my name, 'cause I'll hear you scream
