OK, first of all I don't really like Metallica, from what I've heard, but the other day I heard Nothing Else Matters again, and I realised that I actually really liked that song. Basically, are there any other songs they've done that are like that (ballads I guess), and if so, can you recommend me some good ones?
-fade to black
-sanitarium
-one
-orion(its not a ballad but its a very good instrumental)

i recon st.anger was a big slap in the face for them and they will return to the real metallica the metallica the produced songs like fade to black, master of puppets, and enter sand man.

i bet, no, i KNOW that people were excited when kill 'em all first came out. one of many things that made this ablum unique was that there were no later characteristic soft songs on kill 'em all, just 100% rocking out. so what im wondering (since i wasnt alive to see it) is what people were thinking when they heard the soft, melodic intro to "fight fire with fire". anybody who was alive back then feel free to answer.

My favorite is Kill Em All, or Master Of Puppets.
Kill Em All: Metallicas first album. Dave Mustaine was on it. In MY opinion one of the best metal guitar players ever. With songs like "Seek & Destroy", "(Anesthiesa)-Pulling Teeth" & "The Four Hoursemen", you cant go wrong. Also great solos in every song on the album.
Master Of Puppets: Probably the album that changed most peoples lives including mine. This is Cliff Burtons last album. The song "Orion" completely blows me away. One of the best instrumentals ive heard in my life. Heavy riffs, pounding bass line, great transitions & to top it all off a bass solo! One of my favorite songs "Battery" is also on this album.
I know i didnt need to do that im just bored :thumb:

aright im a young kid but ill answer you any way. Metal back then had ballads usually ie; Poison, Cinderella (whom both i hate). So it didnt really seem new to me when i heard it. I was just like alright what ever, it sounds cool any way. But yeah the song is great all & all

No Mustaine wasn't on it, why are so many people saying this? He was kicked out before the album was recorded and they got Hammett in to play on it. Altho most of the solos were written by Mustaine I believe.

i think one thing that makes metallica stand out is james' voice. it is as if his voice hits all 3 notes of the current powerchord in one. it is like his voice is one big chord. i've never heard anything like it before or since. another thing about metallica is kirk's solos. his solos imo are so unique that if he was to die tomorrow, you would never have the possibility of hearing that solo PERFECT except on a recording. you might hear a mediocre rendition of that solo, but creeping death, blackened, master of puppets, that stuff is hard to imitate, even if you're zakk wylde or someone. hammett's style is so unique, it can't be imitated imo. it can be, but you'd know if it was an imitation or the real thing.

Also i'd like to say after the black album, things for metallica went down hill from there. i do not like anything from load, reload, Sm, St. Anger. Metallica's gotta do some wicked ballads. Metallica can't be trying to get new fans, they need to impressive thier previous fans because Metallica has one of the biggest army of fan that would do anything for them and doing this St. Anger is a joke, i wanna see more fade to blacks and and justice for alls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like the Unnamed Feeling; good lyrics, the way James sings them is astonishing.
They just seem so odd and out of nowhere
THE UNNAMED FEELING
Been here before
Been here before couldn't say I liked it
Do I start writing all this down?
Just let me plug you into my world
Can't you help me be uncrazy?
Name this for me, heat the cold air
Take the chill off of my life
And if I could I'd turn my eyes
To look inside to see what's comin'
It comes alive
And I die a little more
It comes alive
Each moment here I die a little more
Then the unnamed feeling
It comes alive
Then the unnamed feeling
Takes me away
I'm frantic in your soothing arms
I can not sleep in this down filled world
I've found safety in this loneliness
But I can not stand it anymore
Cross my heart and hope not to die
Swallow evil, ride the sky
Lose myself in a crowded room
You fool, you fool, it will be here soon
It comes alive
And I die a little more
It comes alive
Each moment here I die a little more
Then the unnamed feeling
It comes alive
Then the unnamed feeling
Treats me this way
And I wait for this train
Toes over the line
And then the unnamed feeling
Takes me away
Get the **** out of here
I just wanna get the **** away from me
I rage, I glaze, I hurt, I hate
I hate it all, why? Why? Why me?
I cannot sleep with a head like this
I wanna cry, I wanna scream
I rage, I glaze, I hurt, I hate
I wanna hate it all away
Bolded for eh
Squirrel

It's about fighting with people clsoe toyou and the inability to control it.
"Lose myself in a crowded room" is saying when he is around people he cant help but not be himself; "you fool .. " means he knew it was gonna happen but he doesnt do anything to help it.
The "i jsut wanna .." is crying out that he doesnt want to be like that and he wants to not be like he is.
Till_Lindeman001

Bolded for eh
I think the first one is probably James describing how he felt before rehab (sort of like loads of thoughts going at the same time) as like trying to talk in a crowded room (good description really) and the second is a progression of the song, it gets gradually more angry as the song progresses. BTW The Unnamed Feeling is by far the best song on St. Anger. :thumb:

hi all, i was a metallica fan before st.anger was released (as most of u r) and i have to say it completely took me by surprise, what happened to the solos, dynamic riffs and his voice CHANGED! but hey, st.anger isnt that bad. but i doubt they'll release an album better than stuff like kill 'em all. but to many of u out there you like st.anger more than the old stuff so, i guess ur in luck.
I still respect metallica, they (like nirvana) have changed music forever.
even some chavs like metallica!
Garage.inc is incredible (not original) but really kick ***! they executed songs like Sabbra Cadabra and Am i Evil? perfectly. but what i would like to know is why Jason left.
Grammar Fuhrer
08-18-2004, 02:54 PM
I think he left because he felt like the rest of the guys weren't in it for the music anymore, they were just in it for the money. At least that's what I heard. He may've just gotten tired of Lars' crap. I'm not entirely sure. I'm a huge fan of Metallica and I was disappointed with St. Anger, but it's still a lot better than most of the crap people are putting out these days. Maybe the next album will be better.

Maybe the next album will be better.
i think its actually because Metallica didnt really treat him very well, the band themselves admit this

They didnt treat him well and other things. It is talked about in SKOM and MTV icon. In Icon, he said he wanted to take a year off to work on his Echobrain project, but Metallica said no. And he told himself, he needed to stand up for his morals, so he left.

I guess maybe because he just played bass, as opposed to being vocal about issue (ie napster) or becoming an alcoholic...he didn't have the big personality that the rest of them do.

Well i know this, James said so himself that if Cliff were still alive, then the Loads (Load and ReLoad) would have bee released a lot sooner. Everyone else in the band was listening to metal and punk, while cliff listened to slower stuff like REM and so forth. And cliff obviously had a huge influence on the band. So maybe, we wouldnt have AFJA and Black Album, and maybe metallica wouldnt be as popular as they are. Ya never know.

my only guess is that since hetfield got out of rehab, some of the material he and/or the rest of metallica have written was based on what James was going through before or during his time in rehab. and i think that would be hard to put a solo to... and the drums are probably just something lars thought went good with the song, but im probably wrong since im clueless when it comes to drums. well, this is just a thought.

when cliff burton died, metallica had to change their lineup. not becuae they suck, but becuase they lost their bassist (which wasnt their fault) so they needed a new bassist. so you are saying they shouldve just given up and quit after it just because their bassist was gone? if they quit, they would be a buch of pathetic loonies, who cant do anyhting about whatever happens. but no, they were strong, and continued being a band, despite the tragedy that happened. they hired a new bassist, and made great albums like AJFA and TBA. giving up just because your lineup changes is pathetic. you have to be strong no matter wht happens. and quit posting such bull****.
RIP cliff burton
So I saw Some Kind of Monster today. It was a good film that tells how most of st anger was made. It really explained why some songs were made lyrically (sweet amber for national radios that hassled them, some kind of monster for them lyrically making a frankenstein out of all the diff parts he mentions durring it, all within my hands for jasons departing of the band/james's way fo showing affection by not letting them leave). They had things about why there were no solos and i guess when the band was at that emotional state where they need like 2 therapists regularly i guess chemistry can be hard to come by. Overall good movie 8/10

I belive that it was because they wrote the songs in a different way, i watched a documentary about st. anger and metallica (on all the other albums) had wrote thier songs in thier own time and brought them in for the rest of the band to perfect it. but for st. anger bob rock (the producer) just gave them some paper and told them to write, it was all forced out of them, everyone knows that thats not a way to write good music.

That's because he can't hit the double bass fast. You've heard about how they double tracked Dyers Eve, right? Double bass is not about being cool, its about sonic potential. Metallica could use some double bass, it would probably make their recent music sound non-shytty.
Look I'm not trying to be a prick, but I call em as I see em. I don't see how people can rave about Lars when he does absolutely nothing special. The only reason he gets credit is because he is in Metallica. If he was in another band, nobody would give a rats arse about him.

There were no solos in St. Anger, suggesting maybe arthritis has finally got the better of Kirk (Nevermind, I wasn't serious...) it would just be interesting, to me, if Metallica got back Mustaine.
Being a fan of both bands...

Does anyone know of a good site where I can get a live recording of Creeping Death at Woodstock 99? I've looked at a few sites and they won't work when I tried to download. The site mentioned by hilfenburger didn't have it (top of the page). I would seriously appreciate your help if anyone can. :)

WTF?
Are you lazy or blind?
Try a search of "lars" and "sucks" and you'll find plenty of intelligent arguments.
\m/Pete\m/
08-22-2004, 01:34 PM
No they arent intelligent in the least...Most of the arguments ARE about his drumming or always end up about his drumming on St. Anger. Ever listened to Blackened, the drumming on that is awesome. Im not saying that Lars is the best out there, but he certainly doesnt suck. He may be a little bit of an asshole as a person but as a drummer he is good.

I don't give a shyt how he is as a person...that has absolutely no bearing on his music whatsoever, and people who use that are morons.
"I hate Axl Rose because hes a dick"
"Phil Anselmo can't sing b/c he's an asshole"
"Lars is a jerk in real life"
Who cares...I don't know them, I don't care how they are. It's all about the music. And, frankly, Lars is an entirely overrated drummer, lucky enough to start a band which became incredibly famous. Any other drummer could have filled his spot. Nothing special.

I never said that his personality affects the way he drums...i agree with what you said about people who say something like that. It was only used as a contrast not a basis for a statement. You are still dancing around the question and havent given an answer. You just said he's "nothing special" and infamous "overrated". And the sentence about how anyone else can fill his shoes can be said about almost ANY band.

I´ve mastered the first and like this one too and there is no uber fast part I consider those inposible at this point.
Thanks in advance

i think alot of people think lars sux cuz he has no technique at all....... however he is the best drummer iv'e heard in metal....... he might not have traditional technique but he's good in the "hit every drum u can and make it sound good" style
cliffburtonrules
08-22-2004, 04:40 PM
That's because he can't hit the double bass fast. You've heard about how they double tracked Dyers Eve, right? Double bass is not about being cool, its about sonic potential. Metallica could use some double bass, it would probably make their recent music sound non-shytty.
Look I'm not trying to be a prick, but I call em as I see em. I don't see how people can rave about Lars when he does absolutely nothing special. The only reason he gets credit is because he is in Metallica. If he was in another band, nobody would give a rats arse about him.
Not to mention that god awful snare. *shudder*
whaqt do u mean he can't hit the double bass? have u heard One?!?!? and i admit that was a horrible snare choice but that was for only 1 album.

that wont happen, because Metallica dont give a **** who there bass player is. No matter if they had the best bassist ever, it would make no difference at all. Metallica was never about bass guitar playing. Not even during the Cliff days. Metallica is James and Lars, that's it. They call the shots. For example Hammett is a very good guitar player, now tell me, what kind of creative control did he have on St.Anger?, did anyone hear a solo? That's because James and Lars decided to go into a different deriction with the band on the album. Not only that, but if James and Lars told Hammett to write solos for the album, dont you think he would have done it?

Former BROKEN HOPE and current LUPARA guitarist Jeremy Wagner sent us the following report from yesterday's Ozzfest stop in Tinley Park, IL:
"I went to the Tweeter Center in Tinley Park, IL yesterday and thought you might be interested to know that Kirk Hammett was in attendance. I heard he had shown up (METALLICA are doing two sold-out shows in Chicago on Aug. 27 and Aug. 28). So I went back and found him in a VIP booth overlooking stage — left of the mainstage. He was hanging with a mutual friend of mine so I made some small talk with him.
"Kirk was totally pumped to see DIMMU BORGIR, but was kind of pissed because the sound from inside the VIP booth over the side of the stage sucked, and all we could hear were keyboards. When DIMMU exited the stage, singer Shagrath walked beneath the VIP booth, and Kirk commented, 'This guy means business… I mean, look at that ****ing cross [on the singer's chest]!'
"After DIMMU, Kirk decided the sound sucked up in the VIP booth and wanted to get closer to the action, so we all went down to stand on stage left next to Kerry King's rig to watch SLAYER. Kirk commented that he had not seen a full SLAYER show in ages and was stoked about it. During SLAYER's set, Kirk was constantly nodding his head and applauding. Robert Trujillo showed up, too, as SLAYER performed. After SLAYER, Kirk went backstage to hang and then came out to watch full sets of JUDAS PRIEST and BLACK SABBATH.
"Anyway, that's about it. Kirk was way cool and seems to be down with all things metal."

Kerry King once called Kirk Hammet the most overrated guitar in history. I'm pretty sure it was in Kerrang! magazine.
Hence a bit of Slayer/Metallica feud. I wonder if that has worn off with time.
