Ok, lets talk Metallica. You know the intro to Blackened was recorded Backwards? Well I recorded all guitar parts like it shows in the AJFA by Cherry Lane book and it almost sounded exactly like it. It took a long time. Anyways...I went to show a friend what I recorded and the tape started playing backwards, I flipped the tape over and it was playing Blackened Intro Backwards...omg it sounds like an anthem. You gotta hear it baclwards, the original way they recorded it, it sounds eerie. You gotta hear it. I will never forget that.

Once inside I heard the whispers in the parlour
The killing faces grin
Aware of my final...demise

And I Cried
When she had lied
Her obsession died
It had died...

When Can I take you from this place?
When is a word but a sigh?
When is death our lone beholder?
When do we walk the final steps?
When can we scream instead of whisper?
When is the new beginning and the end of this sad madrigal...?

IMO the greatest 'Tallica song has to be Creeping Death!
Its contains all the aspects that make metallica THE greatest metal band: the great intro riff, amazing solo and slow burning chord progression in the bridge/chorus. And of course the lyrics are amazing 'die by my hands i creep across the land killing first born man'. Hopefully james and co. will produce more of these songs on the new album :thumb:

Exactly Inkybus Mop Or Rtl Would Be So Much Better Than St Anger. The Only Thing I Would Care About Is If They Put Together At Like The Last Minute And Dont Put Any Thought Into It. ive noticed that sanitarium and one are very similar

1. they both begin with a soft, accoustic (or clean electric?) intro

2. the verses are accoustic and the choruses are distorted

3. there are 2 verses and 2 choruses

4. after each chorus is sort of a little accoustic solo

5. after the 2nd chorus the rest of the "second" part of the song begins, which is all distorted

6. there is a part with words during the "second" part of the song
(in sanitarium its "fear of living on..." and in one its "darkness, imprisoning me...")

7. after the words is the main solo

8. the song ends with the same riff repeating a few times, only in sanitarium there is also that high-pitched thingy at the very end

i am typing this because i am bored to death

thank you for wasting your time

anyone who thinks metallica sucks, is ummm... ignorant, because metallica is a bunch of very talented musicians that have had years and years of experience in the industry, I admit that thier old stuff is better than the more recent stuff like Load and The Black Album, mainly because I think all the drinking greatly effected their music, I am not saying those albums I mentioned suck or anything, I think they are great, I just like the older stuff better

The reason St. Anger isn't as good as it could of been is mainly because it was rushed. Their producer, Bob Rock, wanted to maintain the energy and "raw-ness" of it and so he would give them a time frame to whip out a song. This was probably a bad move on James' part, but since the band had to whip out songs in 30 minutes they made Bob produce the songs in an hour or less or something like that. So, I believe St. Anger could of probably kicked a whole lot of *** if the band members and producer hadn't rushed each other. What do you kids think?

People flame metallica because they have been a bit poo since the black album. Also Lars was a bit of a cunt with the napster thing. But think about Kirk standing next to Hetfield, who is the man out of them..Hetfield...Kirk looks a whiney be0tch. End of.

I hate it when people say they want the old Metallica back. I'll tell you a little secret on how to get the old Metallica back, what you do is go grab that greatly loved Master Of Puppets album and put it on. Do you realize how boring it would be if Metallica made the same album over and over again. A lot of people say they want the old Metallica back but if Metallica made the same album over and over again then people probably would be saying something like "Metallica is boring now can't they do something new."

Good for Metallica for constantly trying something new and experimenting. Good for them that they are brave enough to do something without the permission of their fan base and to write the way they see fit. If they keep experimenting there is no doubt in my mind that they will stumble upon something new and great.

I will tell you what, guy:
I'm playing for about a week and a half now. I'm VERY new to guitar(Though not that new to music generally). Now, I took "Frantic", and played it all ****ing through... In some time, I could do it clean. I don't concider writing a song consisting of maby 10 notes a great deal of writing. ****, on "Nothing else matters", one song of their classic albums that is considered "easy", and "Beginner stuff", I've been ****ing struggling for days through, 'till I could do it close to something that sounds as a resemblance of what they have actually done. Now, see the differance? "Frantic", "New Metallica"=3hrs of practice to play fluently. "Nothing Else Matters", a beginner song of the "Classic Metallica"= Something about 3 weeks of practice to be played fluently.

Now, if you know basic math, you would see that claasic metallica is something about AT LEAST(24:3x7x3=24x7=)168 times more proffesional and complicated , not speaking about good-sounding than the "New Metallica".

If you still say that "Classical Metallica"="New Metallica" now, you must've not visited school one day in your whole life. Or you are just a complete jerk.

And for the record, I think that St.Anger wouldn't be that bad of an album if we all didn't know that it was Metallica... I mean, for an average "New Metal" band those days, it can be look upon as one album quite on a level... I mean comparing to Slipknot and Korn and such... ****, god****ingdanm! Look to what level have we degenerated! :upset:

I never said that new Metallica is better because by far it isn't. I completely agree with you on the fact that old classic Metallica is by far more sophisticated and intricate. But one thing you have to understand, yes they may have thrown all of their sophistication out of the window, but you can't expect a band like Metallica who has always kept changing to do something they have already done. It would be absolutely pointless to make another Master Of Puppets CD because they have already done it. Evey album they have made was very different from the last (exception of Load and Reload but they are basically the same album anyways). I'm am perfectly fine with people saying they dislike St. Anger but I just do not like it when they say to go backwards. "There is no u-turn sign in Metallica's road"(paraphrased from Hetfield, Uranium interview May 2003).

Am I the only Metallica fan that actually liked St. Anger?

Okay... Here's my list of albums... best to worst (not that they really have a bad album).....

1. Ride the Lightning
2. Master of Puppets
3. ... And Justice For All
4. Kill 'Em All
5. The Black Album
6. St. Anger
7. Load
8. Re-Load

I have been arguing a theory of mine with my band and anyone else within proximity whilst I am drunk, so let's see how everyone else takes this...

Metallica for their first five albums were THE groundbreaking band. They helped invent the thrash metal genre, the most brutal music of the time, as even Napalm Death had yet to release 'Scum', they then abandoned the genre and invented their own sound and style, notably on the openly progressive MOP and ...AJFA.

Then they did the unthinkable and took metal into the mainstream, and at the same time brought in an emotional introspection that had not been truly done prior to the Black Album.

However, after this, as most fans will agree, they chased the mainstream with the Load and Reload albums.

My theory is that St. Anger is to a certain extent an evolution of this mainstream chasing. Is it a coincedencethat whilst mimsy rock ruled the roost they released the sonic abortion that is the 'Load'-era, but the minute that heavy metal hits the charts, they feel the need to return to the roots that so many of the current chart toppers claim to have influenced them?

hell maybe it's just me, and if you 'Tallica die hards want to crucify me, I would rather you did it with a sensibe and coherent arguement rather than just bellowing poorly spelt obscenities. Also, let's not have all the jazzers just slagging Metallica because they don't like metal. I would really like just a sensible and friendly debate.

Then we can all talk in clever speak and impress the pants off of any nearby members of the opposite sex.

dude, i love load and reload. to me, there are three eras of metallica -

1) early days - includes: kill 'em all, ride the lightning, and master of puppets.
2) middle years - and justice for all, black album
3) expiramentation - load, reload, and st. anger.

i admit that the recording process on st. anger, was a little less than to be desired, but it really reminds me of the justice album. like some guy in here said earlier, Lars finally brought out the double bass's again. if u think that all the songs on st. anger sound the same, go check out the justice album. or really, just any album. they mostly have some sort of theme to them.

metallica killed their career when they killed kirk hammets solos, simple as!

Good theory, very well thought out. However i do not agree so much with the "mainstream chasing" aspect of it. When Metallica is going to do something its because its what THEY want to do. Metallica knows what metal is..they helped create it...I applaud them for trying somthing else with Load, Reload and St. Anger. Everyone constantly complains about "Old Metallica" and "I want another MOP", but in all reality if Metallica would've released another MOP then people would complian that they lost their creativity and should try something different. With St. Anger, Metallica just wanted to get back in the studio and make music they wanted to make and they did, regardless of what people thought of it. St. Anger may not be the most technical cd of all time, but who are they trying to impress? Everyone knows kirk can solo like a mofo, Lars can drum anything (everyone bashes on lars but the time changes and on/off beat half choke style he has is amazing), and James can write unbelievable music and play very fast riffs while singing (i'll leave rob out since he's fairly new).

I've also always thought this...The only reason people do not like St.Anger is because it says "Metallica" acrossed the top and they arent used to this style from Metallica. But if some up and coming band released St.Anger, people would like it.

OK, man, sorry. Thought you were trying to be some sort of a ****master yourself... I think that all that thing started from Load and ReLoad... Although I do like those albums, when you listen to them after classic Metallica, they suck *** just the same as listening to St.Anger after them, IMO... I mean, Metallica are degenerating instead of (atleast) regenerating, now that they're back on stage... From "Ride the Lightning"(I don't really like "Kill 'Em All"...) to the Black Album, they have been changing styles, but not loosing in all aspects of proffesionality and sound, while when Bob Rock stepped into the picture, they suddenly swaped from the deepest texts and musical compositions of their thrash metal style, to those meaningless, musically empty songs like "Aint My Bitch", or "2x4"... I don't, and never will, believe that they have lost their potential of being a respecful ensamble of musically educated, and developped musicians, with some meaning or atleast sense in their songs, and not "I'm Fran, tic tic tic tic tic toe"!
And I say that, because musically talented people don't "loose" their talent, they're just pushed by some cockasses as Bob Rock, to hide it deep in the closet, and start making money instead of music...
I heared that in Load and ReLoad they were just sort of trying out the rock genere, and then, in St.Anger, Bob has pushed it to that stance, that after Kirk has written a 60 seconds of guitar solo, Lars came up to him, and said "Kirk, your ****ing guitar interrupts my drums"! :upset:
We don't say we want a new "Master of Puppets" album, we say we want a new Metallica album, rather than a Bob Rock album...

Cheers BlackDeath. Incidentally, has anyone here read The Dirt by Motley Crue? Not a fan of the music as such, but it was a most interesting read, and I believe when they discuss the whole Dr Feelgood era, they to a certain extent accuse Bob Rock of pushing them to change their sound and their outlook from trashy glam-punk to radio rock.

Maybe it's a coincedence that two relatively underground bands should go the same way..

Also, if, and when, I say I want the old Metallica back over the new Metallica, I mean in the whole essence of their lack of fear to constantly push the boundaries, I mean, look at the huge amount of ground they covered in their first five albums (bear in mind the 'Black' album was mostly written before Bob Rock came into the picture):

Kill 'Em All-Four kids creating the most brutal music of the time to a standard not often heard considering their youth (yes I know half of Death Angel were between seven and foetus when they first the scene)

Ride The Lightning-Almost abandoned Thrash already, writing ballads and slow, groove orientated songs instead of 280bpm open E thrash

Master Of Puppets-Writing 8/9 minute long songs when the metal audience mostly demanded 3:30 songs about whiskey and blwjobs of silicone breasted coke fiends

...And Justice For All-Thought provoking and emotional lyrical matter, songs so long that lesser bands would lose all their limbs trying to play them (Title track is nearly ten minutes long!) 'One' shows a little bit of prediliction towards the mainstream, what with reducing song length for the video, but from spanish guitars to the most metal song conclusion in history makes up for it

Metallica/Black Album-complete departure from what they had ever done before, excepting melodic capability only ever hinted at in 'Fade To Black' etc. Brought emotion into the rock arena. Proved to the world that heavymetal wasn't the preserve of satan worshipping jocks with an I.Q. smaller than the number of chords that Poison could play.

The key in all of these albums is innovation, and going somewhere that they hadn't gone before, and that people didn't think they could go to. Everything after that is simply retreading old ideas. Let's face it, without comparisons to everything pre-91, the Load albums and even St. Anger (I suppose) are better than what some bands put out. there are even some genuinely good songs in there too (not including St. Anger, in my opinion at least).

so when I say I want the old Metallica back, I mean I want them to surprise me, and do the things that made them the innovators of the genre that they once were, instead of the cliches of the genre that they are now. I think it is truly sad to see a band that was once the finest without question to a certain extent waste their phenomonal talent by not pushing themselves like we saw them do in the past.

Woah, a massive post. Sorry. Just hope it wasn't too boring.
