I think on average james's solos are better than kirks, well then again james doesnt play that many solos.

Endless Obsession
05-13-2004, 10:56 PM
James is the best rhythm guitarists, and kirk is very good, Kirk has more speed, but i think james' rythm is awesome and so are the few solos he plays.

STaying kind of on the same subject, what order are there three bassists in ability level. I would have to say:
1. Cliff Lee Burton
2. Robert Trujillo
3. Jason Newsted

I love You
05-13-2004, 11:02 PM
Trujillo is good no doubt about it. But i prefer jason and cliff more

Endless Obsession
05-13-2004, 11:04 PM
I agree that jason is more known as a metallica bassist but i think that robert has a better ability at the instrument. After cliff though the use of the bass declined. When they had cliff they could write songs like call of ktulu, pulling teeth etc. cliff is definitly the best IMO

I love You
05-13-2004, 11:09 PM
Songs like My friend of Misery and the god that failed have good bass riffs and they were written by jason.

And i've taken up the guitar and i've been learning tons of thier songs. My favorite ones to play woudl have to be master of puppets and am i evil? those songs rock. Among many others.

I heard a good theory as to why there are no guitar solos on St.Anger:
"Kirk couldn't be bothered to work out all his scales for drop C"
and even if that is true. why hasn't james worked out the scales?

For Drop C, the way to play the scales would be the exact same but two frets higher (excapt on 6th string...)... If you know in Standard Tuning, you know in Dropped C... In Load and Reload they play with Eb and they played solos anyway...

Anyone know how metallica write their songs? Do they write riffs, then lyrics around it? or lyrics, then riffs?

Squirrel
05-15-2004, 04:17 PM
James says its they jam to find some riffs - work over them. He then works out vocal harmonies and tunes around a theme. He sings *na nanaan na* over demos then fits in lyrics over the syllables. Solos and effects are last.

I got all that from the Black album DVD.

My mums 50th birthday. We went camping with a bunch of aged hippies. Sat round the campfire talking about Metallica with one of the best guitarists I have ever met. Then we started singing Rolling Stones and Led Zeppling with his acocustic.

Stairway to Heaven modification:
And then some more verses
if we knew them we would sing them
but we don't, so we go to the rocky bit

I was just looking at the first posts of this tread and realized that I had asked a question many months ago and it never got answered.

Is there a reason that James Hetfield sings the word 'motorbreath' in such a peculiar way or is it just a speaking disorder?

OH MY F*CKING GOD! The best thrash ever? Everyone is a copy of Metallica? You dumb f*cker. Let me begin to tear into your flesh.

1)Last time I checked, Kirk Hammett couldn't play even half as fast as Kerry King, Marty Friedman, Dan Spitz, Jeff Hanneman, or anyone from Dark Angel, Testament, or Exodus.
2)Metallica are good thrash, not GREAT thrash. Anyone who knows the Thrash genre well know that our genre was defined by those with a great loyalty to the thrash underground. These bands still love their original fanbase, and haven't stabbed the thrashers in the back. These bands include Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer, Exodus, Testament, Dark Angel, Kreator, and almost every other Thrash band except for Metallica.
3)Metallica isn't a thrash band anymore. They've turned Mallcore, and I hate them for it. They still sound good live, but only when the older stuff is played. If I met James or Lars in person, I would jusk ask them why they did it. Because of fanboys such as yourself, great albums went unnoticed because of the wait for St. Anger, which was the biggest dissapointment in metal history since Halford left Judas Priest. The albums unnoticed: The World Needs a Hero, We've Come For You All, God Hates Us All, and many more.

Need I explain more? Oh, for the TRUE thrashers, feel free to put in anything that I missed.

First of all pull your panties out of your *** its constricting blood flow to your head. Lets do the paragraph by paragraph.

First of all. I said WAS and I. metallica WAS the best thrash ->I<- ever heard. meaning long ago and meaning my opinion. That means my perspective and that doesnt mean Im a dumb f*cker. Maybe you should try improving reading comprehension. I bet you didn't even read my whole post. OK.

1) First of all, the only guitarist you mentioned in there that could be decidedly "better" than Hammet would be Freidman and Skolnick. They are above most other musicians in general and are virtuosos. Every one else on your list does not own hammett. ESPECIALLY Hanneman and king. Are you f*cking kidding me? Their solos are the most non musical **** ever, they dont even play scales they just make up their own BS scales that have zero melody and zero impact on the songs. Spitz is ok, but I dont see him being much better or worse than hammett. Rhythm wise, I do not see a difference in the fast slayer riffs like alter of sacrifice, etc and riffs like Disposable heroes or dyers eve.... Listen to Justice solos and tell me they are not "fast", since fast seems to be your small minded view of "great thrash".

2) uh. ok. Your saying metallica sold out but megadeth didnt? WTF was insomnia? LAME A$$ $HIT is what it was. SELL OUT MUSIC. as far as testament, they had skolnick, but after a while I began to see their true nature, just a metallica clone. And they do not write better songs than metallica. Most of testaments sh!t is pretty cheeseriffic.

An example of slayer selling out.-->God Hates Us All.

3) you are obviously a troll. If you would have bothered to read the entire thread you'd know that I hate new Metallica, and love old metallica. so shut the f*ck up.

great albums the world needs a hero and god hates us all? rofl. great sh!tty sellout albums yea.

Poser song: something made up by some sh!thead so he can harass another poster for liking a song.

Even though I hate enter sandman, I love MoP. how can you say master is 'poser', or even associate it at all with Enter Sandman. Anyone who claims that a Cliff Burton tune is a 'poser song' should be taken out back and put out of his poser misery.

3. Master of Puppets
4. ...And Justice for All

thnx. My brother told me he remembers listening to orion all the time while he was a kid lol, so that song is pretty much ingrained into both of our dna. I think the reason I liked it so much was becuase I originaly heard MOP on a recorded cassette, that didnt have the whole album. It cut off half of orion. I only heard the beginning of the bass solo, so i never knew for a while what was on the other side of that song. Once I got the real one, i wigged out when I head the real ending, its been my fav ever since. Plus i heard damage for the first time so that was cool.

I think my favorite metallica songs to play on the guitar were (looong time
ago) Damage, Blitzkring, Shortest Straw, and Disposable Heroes.. (i been playing guitar forever and I still cant play the song all the way through non stop. I get f*cking cramps at the end of the first verse right before the pre chorus, and of course the pre chorus is insanely faster than the verse, ow.)

I also liked playing Garage days- Green hell, helpless, the wait; they are so cool to jam with, esp cuz they're pretty easy songs to learn.
My fav on that record was probably small hours. That songs kicks ***.)

There is a DVD supposedly coming out in month MAYBE, they havent set concrete dates although my brother is in Tool Army so he gets good intel.
If u have kazaa you can find some good (and bad) Tool vids.

I cant tell you exactly how I think Tool is a better live show. It has more to do with the songs being played. Both bands perform great, unlike A LOT of bands out there, Metallica and Tool (and a few others ) can actually add to the songs personality and sometimes hearing them live gives you a new perspective on the songs. But for me when the lights go down and the Tool show begins with that synth drone, it becomes other worldly, and almost spiritual, and while Metallica performs with excellence, with tool the show becomes more personal and on a different level than metallica. Tool doesnt play off the audience as much as metallica does, and this does bother people who like to be entertained by the artist interaction. Not that tool doesn't, its just a different interaction than metallica. But since I am a bigger fan of Tool than metallica at this point, My bias leans toward Tool. But Both bands perform well, and sound great.

Id like to hope metallica finds a new approach to their next record. Id like to hear some prog metal again...'

edit: btw thanks for the kind words guys, im pretty proud of that song, its probably our best recording to date. :thumb:

re edit: reccomendations for first metallica album

New to metal: Black Album

Not new to heav music: Master, Justice, lightning, Garage Days, Kill em all.
Justice does have pretty bad production, the only reason I said master first. I say Master and Justice are tied imo for the best overall metallica preformace, only tied becuase of the bad recording of justice. lets start a petition demanding metallica remix Justice so we can hear Jasons bass finally.

the black album has some very good lyrics, and VERY good singing by james hetifled probably his best in his whole career, the guitars became more simple than other albums before but metallica gained in singing, that's why it became more appelaing to other people who arent metal heads
  , not that i'm not one, i'm glad that they made the black album cos it showed me that metallica wasnt just another thrash band, it showed me that they could go beyond that and do whatever they want as musicians, and create a beautiful song like nothing else matters, who the **** doesnt love that song, and most of the songs in that album are pretty good imo

all of them :thumb: i coudnt name a favorite man, but im digging triad as of late.

uh, lets hear your masterpiece doodooflinger. unless you have music that is better than metallica you shouldnt be making rulings on whether a band that has sold millions and millions of records and pleased millions of fans with live shows should be able to make music. tard. So please post your music I want to hear your ingenious riffage.

 So now you need to have the same quality music as the music you are judging?

So what, he doesnt like Metallica, he doesnt have to be as good as them not to like them, or to judge them.. The way he stated it wasnt exactly exuding intelligence, but I still stand by my statement.

or maybe it's cuz Metallica sucks *** and shouldn't be aloud to make music except for Kirk Hammet everyone else in that band is a gay waste of semen.

If he is the Decider of Who Should Be Allowed To Write And PLay Music, then **** straight he better pwn metallica.

i think Fade to Black is kind of hard, but then again im not the best at guitar. My band may play one in the fall at our schools talent show we were gonna play the one thats going on now but we didnt have enough time to get our **** together. Im in the middle of learning the last solo at themoment. its the only part i dont have down, but can someone show me the tab for the part right after the chorus plays for the last time. i can play what it says on this one tab but its kind of confusing what goes where, so if ya can replie to this and giveme a site or just put it in here. thanks. Fade to Black and One are thier best songs i have to say. but call of the ktulu and Orion, both instrumentals are awesome to, but not alot of people tend to say anything about them.

Musha is a wigger, thinking metallica fans are goths. HE is the true bane of the human race.

You come to me, me and about 5 guys I know who all hate wiggers will fu.cking kill you.

EDIT: Wait, I'm not done yet.

You know absoluetly nothing of any lifestyle other than the pathetic, wannabe-gangsta lifestyle you've chosen in your demented little head. You're too much scum for me or anyone I know to even think about beating. So here's the plan. Why don't you just take your wigger as.s down to a REAL gangsta area, and we'll see how long you last, you fu.cking pile of dog vomit.

If Rob were to quit or something happened that stopped him from being a musician, do you reckon Jason Newsted would ever return or do you think Metallica would get a new bassist altogether?
