In unforgiven the words just don't flow together as i would like them to, sure they make sense if you grab the general gist of the idea but these lyrics feel taped together for me, as in the wording is kind of weird and doesn't feel right

If you read The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald, and compare it to The Unforgiven. The lyrics will make perfect sense.

True, but wasn't it always?

It also provides a decent place for sensible metallica discussion rather than starting useless new threads that will get 3 replies then disappear for all eternity.

Also we have a goal - to beat the original deathheads thread.

Sensible Metallica Question:
Does anyone know why Metallica use The Ecstasy Of Gold (on S&M, before concerts, etc.)?

Hey everyone,I'm kinda new so flame away, let me say, I like this site alot.!!.
This is the longest thread I have replied to.I cant say I read the whole thread,,but quite a bit.I noticed alot of people havent even heard some of the Earlier Metallica,if you like them now, check some older stuff. Those guys came out swinging, and will go down that way..They used to be my Fav band through school,,real 80's and 90's metal. You want to hear Lars play some real kicka$$ drums.?get the older stuff,And justice for all is IMO the hardest fastest album they did.Kill em All was smokin!!.Master of puppets another smokin album. And who can forget Ride the Lightning??
Cry out!!I'm trapped under Ice.For whom the bell tolls is one kick riff..Fade to black was always the favorite ballad from them,or Sanitarium.

R.I.P. Cliff Burton,,you Rock,and always will,imo.

If you want to dig deaper in the metal Archives,,check out some Exodus..Kirk Hammett Started those dudes too..cmon,,,Everybody do the toxic waltz..Slam your partner against the wall.!!THATS METAL!!Exodus is some real old school metal, waaaaaaaaaaaaay back..Pick up some of the First Megadeth, and some of the first Metallica, hear how 2 bands split, and made the same songs real kicka$$.

fav lyric,,hmmmmm...ok ...and justice for all. hits home.."Dyers eve" in full.!!real slam it in your face tune.not really digging the new stuff, but mabey i'm just old........I do like how they have tried alot of different things along the way.Much Respect to em'.

Photophobic

I think what you meant to say was For Whom the Bell Tolls is one kick-*** riff after another kick-*** riff after another kick-*** riff....

not really digging the new stuff, but mabey i'm just old........I do like how they have tried alot of different things along the way.Much Respect to em'.

Ok, now I've seen everything. Someone said they didn't like the new stuff, WITHOUT flaming the band into the ground!

Testament ( heavier and faster mostly ), Megadeth, anthrax, Slayer, Exodus.

No one's voice is that much cool than Bruce's!
And they're not so much heavier, as they play totaly different styles of music

Try Misfits. They sound nothing like Metallica, but after I heard some covers from Garage Inc. I got some mp3s and you may like 'em, I did. And so did James and Lars, obviously.

Yeah, but I guess it's more because of the status and number of albums. There are also other similarities, but I can't be bothered with little details like that.

As a suggestion though, I would go though your favourite songs on Garage Inc. and get a few songs by those artists.

If I'm not mistaken, Cliff had a tattoo of the Misfits skull (the fiend, I think it's called) on his right shoulder.

If I'm not mistaken, Megadeth did the sequal song thing to. They had Hanger 18 and Return to Hanger.

Hey guys, can anyone answer this?

To the best of my knowledge, Metallica had a documentary of the creation of the Black Album. Can anyone tell me if they've seen it, whether this was released on a VHS or anything, and if it is possible to find it anywhere?

Thanks, I'd appreciate it.

hold the pick right

ur pick should be under ur thumb like it's gotta fit perfectly and use ur index finger so the pick wont fall , and just let the edge go out(obviously)

try looking for some pics at google of how to hold ur pick right cos it's hard to explain and just practice man it takes a while to get good a picking and some songs are tricky like battery or blackened :thumb:
if you just pick with your wrist, rather than your whole arm moving that way your hand stays about 1/2 inch from the bridge at all times it will greatly increase the dynamics of your playing, you can stop notes whenever you want and they can be distinguished from one another, the music just sounds sharper and cleaner, remember its all about poise, precision and practice, speed is a reward from practice the more you practice the dfaster you'll get

sMURFJEW
04-26-2004, 11:46 PM
it took me about a month to get the picking right so i could go fast enough for master of puppets. But then when i learned blackend i was so good at fast all downstroke picking it was easy and i learned it fast.

james and Lars wrote it even before they formed Metallica.

hey guys i was wondering what do u guys think is the worst song in every album

i'll begin

kea= seek and destroy(gets too repetitive)
rtl= escape(it's allright but could be better)
mop- the thing that should not be(it still kicks *** it's just the weakest song in the album)
ajfa- shortest straw(gets too repetitive but it's still good)
black album-the god that failed
load-bleeding me
reload-better than you( i never liked this song)

st.anger- some kind of monster(gets too annoying and repetitive, that's what happened with most songs, they have some cool parts but they get ruined by other bad parts in the songs)

FrailandBedazzled1979
04-30-2004, 01:00 AM
Kill- metal militia
Ride- call of ktulu
Master- NONE
Justice- eye of the beholder
Black- NONE
Load- poor twisted me
Reload- the unforgiven 2
Garage- free speech for the dumb
St.Anger- whole record

ThrashMaster27
04-30-2004, 01:20 AM
Kill 'Em All - Whiplash (Far to overrated)
Ride The Lightning - Escape
Master Of Puppets - Leper Messiah
And Justice For All - The Shortest Straw
Black Album - The Struggle Within
Load - Ronnie (Sounds like an outtake from the Black Album)
Re-Load - Fixxxer (Boring)
St Anger - Purify (Tricky one as they're all ****e)

And Frail! how dare you say Metal Militia is the worst track! it's one of Metallicas best songs!

My fav songs of Metallica are

Orion
To Live is To Die
Fixxxer
Where the Wild Things Are
Hit the lights

Because you touch yourself at night.

Anyways, I'm seeing Metallica next October (I know, it's quite a ways off, still…), and I'm really looking forward to it. From what I've heard, they put on one hell of a live show.

HAHA Im glad you pointed out Im an idiot. I will assure you I am not an idiot although I am alot of other things. Well, if you were a drummer that was worth anything you would realize why most good drummers think Lars is a waste. Metallica should have changed drummers about 8 years ago. His music is un-inspiring, simple, and basically Lars has become lazy. Now, I was a HUGE Lars fan on Metallicas first 2, maybe 3 albums when he actually played drums. After that he became lazy and paid.

Now, instead of calling me an idiot I would suggest you go educate yourself to some of Lars playing. If your a drummer my guess is that you have been playing for less than 2 years and are about 13 years old. Nothing wrong with young drummers, I help them out ALL the time, young drummers just seem to get all riled up when someone picks on poor little lazy rich Lars. SFK.

I wasn't really getting all riled up, it's just that Lars has been a huge influence on my drumming and I respect him a lot as a drummer, and I wanted to hear your reasons for saying he sucks.

Hey Slave,

I'll bet you and I have some of the some ideas when it comes to Lars hatred. For me personally I felt like I have been let down by Lars. He fires out the first several Metallica albums and just flat wears the heads off the drums! I was a HUGE Lars fan! He was right there with Peart. Then after he became lazy, stayed lazy, and then tried to re-invent himself with that crap on St. Anger is just really pissed me off. I just feel like he has sold himself out and wasted the best years of his drumming career. I wish I could go back in time and tell him this........

I think it's by Aerosmith.

And to Stagefrightken, I'm not saying that he is the perfect drummer, and to some extent I agree that the first 2 or 3 albums were the best of his drumming (from what I've heard of them) for the fast stuff, but it's also the way he plays on the slower stuff that I like. For example the drumming at the begining of one, with just the hi-hats and the bass just blew me away, I don't know why but thought as soon as I heard it that it fitted the guitar riff perfectly, which is the main point of drums, to fit with the other instruments.

To answer your questions 1 by 1, if you will listen to an idiot that is...
1. No, Im not saying you should think Lars sucks because I (myself being a great drummer if I do say so) or any other drummer thinks so. If I had to guess you probably think Travis Barker and Joey Jordison are phenominal too. Well I think they both suck! But thats another arguement. I would like to see you, as a new drummer, move past Lars into some REAL drummers who can inspire greatness. Go tie on some Danny Carey, Neil Peart.

The 2nd part of this "discussion" about you being a new drummer and your age, I pretty much nailed that on the head.

The 3rd part dealing with Lars being an influence. There will be a day in your drumming future, if you continue with it, that you will think to yourself, man, that smartass on the MX forums was right, Lars does kinda suck and he sold himself out. Its great that Lars inspired you at this point of your drumming career. But, as your skills increase, and they will, and they will increase past the skill level of that which Lars has played for the past 10 years, you will discover what all the other more experienced drummers have been telling you. At this time words like Colutia, Carey, Beauford, Palmer, and Bruford will make up your vocabulary.

Now as I told you earlier, an idiot I am not.......

Stagefrightken, you said you were a big fan of lars' drumming on the first two albums.

Yet, you say he sucks.

It's not because he sucks (from your point of view) now, that his earlier work was erased.

Joey Jordison is pretty good yes. His double-bass heel-toe technique is quite impressive although he doesn't use the maxim of his technical ability in his songs, presumably because he is not good enough to be able to play it live everytime. Travis is over-rated, but I have nothing against him.

I forget which bands Danny Carey and Niel Pert play for, but I know I don't listen to them. This is why I'm most influenced by Nicko McBrain and Lars, because those are the bands I listen to the most. If you want to recomend some songs featuring those drummers you mentioned at their creative and/or technical best, then I will try and get hold of them.

As a fellow drummer,i agree with SFK on this :thumb: .Lars is terribly overrated.A friend of mine is a huge Metallica fan too,and he also thinks lars is the best drummer in the world(even though he knows nothing about drums),and i think that's just plain stupid.

Message to SlaveToTheGrind- Your avatar rocks. Sweet guitar, is it yours? What make/model is it?

I've been playing guitar for a year now, started off on a 20 year old acoustic, then found Metallica and had to go electric! :thumb: Currently playing an Epiphone SG.
Favourite songs to play are Fade to Black, M.O.P, Creeping Death, Sanitarium (have just nailed the second solo bit) and Sandman. Anyone got any tips for playing Four Horseman and Blackened? I can't get the rhythm right.

Hey LFDY! Caught me over here did ya! Well the drum forum is boring today so I thought I would try to do some good over here hehe!

Ok, Rush, Spirit of Radio, Free Will (check out that hat tempo!), and Tom Sawyer.

Tool, Sober is Tools most popular song but it is kind of easy to play. You wanna hear some Carey in his finest listen to "The Grudge, 46&2, Aenema (which I was playing last night at practice), and really just about anything on Lateralus (the CD.)

Go buy the Lateralus CD and give us a report tomm.. SFK.
