maybe his dad works a lot and doesn't have a lot of time to spend with his kid so he gives him gifts instead, or maybe his dad just makes a lot of money so getting expensive stuff is just a way of life for him, 1,000$ isn't a lot to some people in the US, people in my town get new cars or up to 20,000$ for 16th birthdays so maybe it isn't spoiled but a way of life
btw I didn't even find the kid's post, I just saw a lot of nice kits on that site

Well theres a big difference between being supported as a kid and being spolied 100% of the time. Kids who get spoiled early on and through there lives have ZERO concept of money and what it means to have cash.
Any gift, anything I ever got from my parents or anyone I never take for granted even the smallest things. I'm lucky to be given anything anyway I don't and never expected to be spolied. Even rich kids should be taught some concept of earning and the value of money.

no thats not what i meant, though i completely agree...
What i meant was, you got fed the story too? You believed it? Personally i think it's a load of crap. Just a bunch of kids trying to impress people with stuff, everybody did it sometime.
Every single piece of gear i own, i payed for completely. When i got my first and current kit, my dad payed half and i payed half, i ended up paying him back half just for the hell of it. I didn't need to. I chose too. Hell, i even payed him for the stain i used to refinish it.
Everytime i go buy gear, i go myself. I take the city bus, or walk, or ride my bike. I don't bug my parents with that stuff unless its something too big to carry home (ie. my janus pedal today) and because of that I am very greatful for all my gear because it reminds me of walking through the bitter cold, boom stand in one hand, ride in the other.
That's how serious i am about my drum gear.
Now if I'm wrong and this isn't a joke, i think that's completely pathetic and all i can ever do is feel sorry for the kid. Cause we all know that that kit will end up either trashed, sold, or destroyed somehow.
I know a kid from school. Used to be good friends with him. He got ANYTHING his parents asked for. He asked his parents for a fender strat. They bought it for him literally the next day. In his basement, at one point he had a guitar, piano, bass, drumset, and saxophone. All top line stuff. They weren't touched more than 5 times. He sold them all and kept the money. If anything i would give it back to my parents.
The same kid got a 5 thousand dollar bike from his parents because he passed grade 8.
Its disgusting...

Jesus Jim, you're awfully pessimistic.
You know, not everyone is bad. It's just a select few that give the rest a bad name.
This brings to mind (if anyone has heard about it) the comics that were published in the newspaper in denmark (i think) depicting Mohammed (Muslim God) in vain or something like that...they drew him as a suicide bomber. Now the Muslim's are all up in arms and starting a riot (more than 11 people killed) because of this. They think it depicts all muslims as terrorists. Like honestly, If anyone were to read that comic, and in seeing that, think that all muslims are terrorists, they need to get their heads checked.

You have to open your eyes man, once you really start to watch people and the way things work you'd become the same way. You can't go along fooling yourself. People try to think of ways to make someone look good subconsiously too, thats a real common thing I see especially with younger people. This leads to goofy relationships, dumb behaviour, people lying to each other, compromising things you don't wanna compromise ect ect...
Sorry but once you observe from a neutral perspective I.E Not being biased toward anything you'll see it man. It may seem like the behaviour of a bitter hateful old man but I can't help it. I can't look through a mask and pretend. Thats the way I see it 100% realistic views.

I think a lot of people on here exaggerate a great amount. I do it myself on occasion. But flat-out lying like this kid that got an 11 piece starclassic doesn't seem as common. Sure, 95% of the people on this bored could be faking it all, but hey, what are we losing?
By your logic, we can basically only trust the people who post videos and pictures of themselves, and their kits.
There has to be a certain amount of trust. What i'm taking from you, is that you have absolutely no trust in anyone unless there is cold hard evidence that everything is the way they say.
Just a question, not meant to spark an arguement, but do you believe in God?
It just seems that, with this logic you're showing me, that wouldn't be possible, so i'm curious.

do know that spoilt isn't a word. Rather, I believe it is the word "spoiled", that you speak of. And i believe it refers to something, such as meat, or soup, that has gone bad, or become rotten. And the reason people use it in context with people, is because kids who are "spoiled" generally have a very skewed view of reality, and believe they arebetter than others. So, by their parents treating them the way they do, they become "spoiled" or go bad. Don't mean to be a dick, just wanted to make it known that it isn't just "jealous poor people" who use the term, because it isn't...it's regular people who have to earn their money to pay for their possessions.

No, because my son or daughter (if I ever have one) will need to learn the concept of reality, and that money is something that needs to be earned. There is no free ride in life, so why give your child one for the first 18 years of their life, it just makes it harder for them to adjust to the real world.

nope, they just refuse to pay for any of it. My mom bought me a couple of pairs of sticks the other day, because we made an agreement, that because I need to focus on school (grade 12), she didn't want me to get a job. So, they would pay for small things like drumsticks. When it comes to stuff like cymbals though, and drums themselves, I have had to pay for it all myself.

No, I would not do that. I would give them oppurtunities, but I would not spoil them. For example, I would lend them the money, like actually sit down, and draw up a payment plan with the kid or cosign on payments for a set of drums or a guitar for them, but I wouldn't straight up buy them. I guess you could say I wouldn't walk a mile for them, but I would walk it with them. That teaches them the values of well, value, and respecting their money, not wasting it. You might also notice, that alot of the "spoiled" kids get into drugs and alcohol just as much as others, they just have a way to constantly fund their habits, and that is one way to become an addict. Those kids with endless funding, also usually have parents who ask few questions on what the money will beused for. So those kids can easily get drugs like cocaine and heroin, and can afford to get them regularily. Alot of heroin addicts are those on the "upper level", who live in what we call "high society". They usually get pressured into by others, and in an attempt to save face, they make the mistake of trying the drug. Soon, they're shooting up, and mommy and daddy are paying for their drug habit.

No, it doesn't mean you live a seperate life, but it definetely means that your sense of reality is different. When I pay for something myself, I know I've earned it, and I enjoy it. I don't even like getting gifts from people, I feel guilty. I don't know why, but I do. It's the way I was raised, my dad puts alot of value on earning things yourself, paying for things yourself, and paying back any debts you have, as soon as possible. I will admit, I live a fairly good life, some people even call me spoiled at some times, because my parents give me money to do things I enjoy, like go to the movies or to buy alcohol so I can have a few beers with my friends. What these people don't see though, is that I help out around the house to earn that money. Powerwashing the driveway, vacuuming the house, etc. On my free time. That and the fact that instead of buying more furniture, or a big TV or spending his extra money on anything. He put that money towards paying off the mortgage on our house, and paying off any debts he owed. That way, he's better off now, and I believe that's the way to go. Pay your debts and respect your money. Someone who is spoiled doesn't have respect for money.

not true. If you don't spoil youre kid, they'll have to get a job to make their money. If they are working for their money, they wont have time to get high, or shoot up, or drink.

its not really a matter of a parent spoiling the kid, its the parent making more money than other adults, if you had the money to buy everything your child or wife wanted. would you do it?
My father makes a very very good income, but he isnt buying me pro level kits and pro level equipment. I pay for everything drum thing i get and have gotten.

I like how he has no idea how to hold a guitar.
Judging from his pitful display there, I'd say his guitar has been through all sorts of abuse. Poor Gibson. I hope he grows up to be a big spender, gets poor and learns his lesson - getting everything for free is a stupid idea, however fun it might be.
When I was his age I had a nylon guitar we borrowed from a family friend. Spoilt bastard.

it was on topic. All of that stuff fits into the topic of this thread, and were valid parts of the discussion being had.
I spent every penny i had on my kit in 8th grade. My ma and pa really enjoy listening to me, even 5 years later. I have band practice twice a week and are very supportive.....but to get back on track the only thing they got me (not counting gifts) was a pair of sticks when i was strapped for cash.

Funny though, those same comics were publsihed in another newspaper in Egypt and no one rioted... makes you wonder, eh?
and that kid... I really do feel sorry for.. wait, is that a him?! I swore he was a girl... oh well. Anyways, I realy do feel sorry for shim because in the future shim is going to know nothing about how to save up money and be so much in debt.

the government steps in when your choices have the potential to destroy another person's life.
like drunk driving.
Sure, you can choose to drink and drive all you want. Crash in to trees, it's your call. BUT you're not the only driver on the road. because you pose a greater-than-you-should threat to other motorists, your action has now been deemed illegal.
And even then, you can still choose to drink and drive. But now you have to accept the consequences if you get cought.
Loyton, unless you're ONLY getting stoned when you're locked in your room by yourself with bare, white-washed walls, i hope you get cought.

I'm gonna side with torino here. It's people like the ones bashing the kid (without knowing him) who make this world a really, really, annoying place to live sometimes.
There's absolutely no good will at all. Maybe if the kid acted like a little punk, he'd deserve it. Instead he gets bashed because his parent's support his interests and are willing to put money into helping him out. If anything maybe you should question his parents' judgement in buying him such a nice kit.
Hell, I'm starting to question the way half of you have been raised especially after the way that noob got bashed for asking a question regarding his snare head.
When I become a dad it's going to be hard to beat my kids (even though i was given a good *** whippin every once in a while when i was a kid... brown parents I tell ya), but if this forum's any indication of the way the next generation's being raised, I think I'll keep my options open.

I don't know about the former. Everyone seems to just be mocking the kid. Sure the fat jokes are funny, and I got a good laugh out of em, but it just got really retarded after a while.
And as for my statement about the way people have been raised, I'm talking more in the sense of the sheer flamage. Especially the way torino got bashed. Sure you've all been raised to be independant etc, and that's great, but there are other aspects involved. I never said you were raised badly, I said I was starting to question... implying I was starting to doubt... and the reasons I'm starting to doubt is just because of the way people have been acting lately.
But that brings up an interesting question.... maybe I've forgotten what it was like to be a teen. Maybe I've succumbed to that veil of superiority that all adults seem to suffer from... that holier than thou attitude.
That or we've just got alot of pricks on the forum.
Hopefully i'll be proven wrong. I've talked to a bunch of the 15-17 year olds on here on msn, and they truly seem like good kids, and are definitely good people. I truly hope that the majority of the youth these days are like.
Btw, I'm not excluding the older folk who also flame. If anything it's worse for us to do that.
Anyways, sorry if I offended you by rasinig questions on the way in which you were raised. My post was more of a general statement regarding the state of the forums as I've said above.
I paid for my kit, and all the subsequent pieces. It's a POS, but I'm happy with it.
Also, think of it this way... if the kid looses interest, we all have a cheaper used kit to bid on :naughty:.. in the end... we win :D
