Ooh, wow, another product by a well-known slightly gimmicy name.
Microsoft, anyone?

I wouldn't write it off straight away.

They are using Dunnett and Fat Cat parts. That's good stuff. I wouldn't be too quick to judge. The sticks are awful, but if they are using good parts, this might actually be a nice snare.

i could make a snare with dunnett and fat cat parts, but it probably wouldnt be very good. its not just the parts that make it good, its the craftmanship.

Ya know what?
I bet half of you people who rag on Aheads have never even tried the goddamned sticks!

Oh man, I bet that will totally break cymbals.
I heard the ahead snare was actually supposed to be kinda good.

Just because a company release one stupid product under a name doesn't mean other products will suck...
I mean, look at Hollywood.

How does that mmatter? All it takes is common sense.

No it doesn't!
That's like saying "This game sakes!" or "This movie sucks!" When your only experience with it is something a friend of yours told you. Or even (as is the case with some things), something a random person heard from another random person.
"Common sense" is utterly stupid.

derryk you cna't say anything about aheads, or anything without trying it.
Ahead has been around for more than 10 years....therefore not a "gimmick". You can criticise all you want, but get your facts right.

Well, would you play your drums with something as solid as an ahead?
I don't think I have to try them to not like them. I just can't have an opinion of weight, feel, etc. I'm saying the concept is bad, I guess..

thing with the sticks, its pretty simple physics. alluminum is more durable than bronze, therfore contact betweent the two, bronze takes more damage. and that plactic sleeve doesnt really do anything.
take an alluminum baseball bat and wrap it with 1/8" plastic, your still not gonna hit yourself in the face with it.
and your movie example has nothing to do with commmon sense.

I am personally not a fan of ahead sticks, and I have tried them. But I definatley won't write off the snare as a gimmick just yet. It sounds like it could be cool.

Bla bla bla, whatever.
All I'm saying is that I've heard of people who have played with Aheads for years and never had anything bad happen to them.
Then there's the other stories...
It's like DW pedals...

What's wrong with the snare? The sticks may not be great, but that snare looks pretty nice. They're using good parts, a nice brass shell. I'm sure the craftsmanship on it is just fine. It probably sounds pretty nice.

what i want to know is, if you break an ahead rimshotting on an ahead snare, are you entitled to a refund??

That's why I stick to my Iron Cobras.
As for the snare, have any of the haters actually played it? It's kind of sad when people can look at what's possibly a quality product and say, "Oh hey, a gimmicky name. I won't be playing that POS snare."
EDIT: Wait, are we talking about the snare now or the sticks? I wouldn't use those sticks. :-\

Its not really about the opinion whether you like the feel of aluminum sticks or not, its more the (maybe unproven) fact that they have broken cymbals. Its like hammering yourself in the foot, you don't have to do it to know its not a great idea.
EDIT - I guess the discussion is Ahead's in general

i dunno man, i think it has potential. it bet it will be just as good or better than any brass snare. if anything i think it runs a high chance of being overpriced. i don't much care for the ahead sticks i've tried, but i'm definatly not writting this snare off until i have tried it

Man I play(ed) with Aheads. The only thing wrong with them is ..... Nothing really.
That snare looks quite good. It would be better IMO if it had Nouveau Lugs.

Sounds like a good snare, nice thin shell, good size. I wouldn't mind trying it out.

the snare actually looks decent. just because people hate the sticks they make doen't mean they make bad snares. that's a stereotype called guilty by association. just because the sticks are crap doesn't make the snare crap as well.

Just because pearl make crap low end cymbals, doesnt mean they make crap kits. ;)
I wanna try one of these snares.

yeah, it is worth a try. i guess what really got me was that in an e-mail i got from ahead, they basically said a company should stick to one area(sticks, cymbals, etc.) which they really had already broken.

it does look good, even the "s-hoop" but what's the point of the "s-hoop". On the snare drum the only thing about it that looks different is that it appears to have a lip on it extending a little over the drum head. Why would they want that and wouldn't that make rimshots harder/sound different?
