Hey guys, I have a question regarding Santana's current/older drummers.
Recently, I was listening to the radio, and they played an older Santana song which featured a beautiful latin solo. I'm not sure if this is the norm in Santana's music, but if it isn't someone's bound to know who performed it and what song it was.
Sadly, I don't remember the lyrics, tune, or name; I just remember almost crashing my car in awe.

Rodney Holmes was Santana's drummer for a while, and so was Dennis Chambers. Both are monster players, so it could've been either of them.

Horacio Hernandez was the other Santana 'big dog'. Dennis Chambers only replaced him in what...2002?

Michael Shrieve was one of the santana greats, listen to the triple album "Lotus" and hear his drumming, it is amazing, he drummed for them in the 70's and 80's i think. But there's also dennis Chambers and horacio hernandez who were great. But i think dennis is back with them now.

Honestly man, you can get that same sound, if not a better one for less. Don't let the marketing fool you.

I think my all time fav drum solo is Michael Shrieve's from the "Soul Sacrifice" performance @ Woodstock... the best part is that he was probably totally fried on lsd.

If any one can find the video online, and post the link here - I would love you.

p.s. - just listened to the live woodstock version, it's actually truncated - in the movie "Woodstock", he does another section where he plays some snare rim clicks 'n such.

Yes! that solo is the best! The end where he leads the band back in is flawless. and his grooving and chops throughout the solo are amazing.
On The 2nd disc of Lotus, the song "Kyoto" has a drum solo for 3/4 of the song. Check that out, threadstarter. Tis fully sik mate!

soul sacrifice. that used to be my big drum solo song in my first band. i was really into santana and michael shrieve's playing. i believe he was the youngest musician at woodstock when he played that solo.

^^^ I almost could say the same thing, (except it wasn't my first band) - a couple buddies and myself played at a high school "spirit" type rally, we closed the assembly with SS - half way through the drum solo, the lunch bell went off, no one even flinched, it was awesome.
If you go to Shrieve's website, he's got a pic of him really young with the kit he used @ Woodstock... I thought that was neato.
