Everyone has to learn sometime. Give the guy a break. This forum's here to help people, not ridicule them for not being able to do something.
I wouldn't know bud, I've never had to replace my snare head before. Take it into your local music shop. They'll prolly put it on for free, and show you how to do it. That or get your instructor to help you do it.

you guys are the biggest jerks I've ever seen on mx, DBJ should initiate mass banning, just because someone new doesn't know what they are talking about doesn't you have the right to bash
to threadstarter,
you unscrew all the tension rods with a drumkey, then put the new head, then screw the rods back in, you probably should let your local music store guy show you how to do it

Same here. The snare is a little more difficult than the rest of the kit though because the beater and the batter are tuned to two different octaves.

what has mx become? yeah i admit this thread is a bit rediculous but come on. sure most of here had to assemble and tune our drums out of the box on Christmas day by ourselves in front of the whole family, but that's no reason to ridicule someone.

If you don't know how to put it on, chances are that you don't have a tuning key either, so just take the sanre down to your local music shop and ask the guy there to do it for you, probably for free. Observe, so you know how to do it next time, and buy a tuning key while you're there. They're like £3/$5.
If you haven't found the FAQ thread yet, you probably don't know what head to get. I'm a Remo guy, so I'd say coated ambassadors are the way to go :thumb:

(to threadstarter) Here's a link to a site which is great for learning how to tune.

It's good to start tuning early on to get good at it. Also, i think it's great that you're getting into drums, dont be discouraged by anyone who talks badly to you. :thumb:
EDIT: I also agree with the two above posters, Remo coated ambassadors are awesome as snare heads.

really? not a big fan of coated anymore, when i get the chance i'm gonna get clear emps over my beated up coated ambs only cuz i don't have enough for both resos and batters.
and as for bashing the noob i say bash away. yes, this is a place for young drummers to learn but when your ignorant enough not to post something like this in the BEGINNERS section you have a flaming coming. It's not like he's posting something on limb independence or poly rhythms so if you're gonna be apart of the forums you must
A) know your place
B) Abide by the rules and procedures(ex: putting a drum head on a kit goes in the BEGINNERS SECTION)

I suggest you let the guy tune it for you first and watch how he does it. Next time when u get a new head, try it yourself. And before that , read the tuning bible (google search: tuning bible)

02-17-2006, 07:53 AM
Bring your snare to a shop and let you show them how to do it, it's always better to have it shown to you than just explained.
For a new snare head, don't get an ambassador when you're just starting out.
You need to develop an ear and gain some experience in tuning, getting an ambassador will just be frustrating if you don't have any experience with tuning. Try a Remo Cs or a similar head.

the rest of these dicks...
You'll see that the dicks as you call them are very helpful once you learn a few basics on how to approach them.
But seriously, now that I have had my fun playing with your self confidence I'm going to offer help. Get new heads. The best snare heads available are REMO Ambassadors. Go to your local store, ask for a coated Ambassador and a Snareside Ambassador in the size of your snare which is probably 14". If the salesperson offers anything else, call he or she a dick and tell them you want these specific heads. Then you come back to these forums and ask about the tuning bible.

seems like a nasty week, everyone went and took it out on this thread. supposedly this was the proverbial straw.
threadstarter, hopefully you've found your way to a music shop and bought a drum key and an amb or something. if not then, read the thread over :p

... and expect even worse flaming
On a more serious note, i really wouldn't get an ambassador batter as a tuning beginner. Those heads are unforgiving if you can't tune, i found it easier to get a decent snaresound with a Remo CS/Evans Power Dot

Seeing as everyone's talking about snare tuning I thought I'd just ask here (instead of clogging the forum with another thread)
My snare has like a 'ping' in it, kind of like the ping of a blown up bouncy ball. I tuned it as best I could and it's been reduced, but the only was I can get it go disappear is by putting a piece of paper on the snare (I found that out when playing a tab)
I'm also unsure of how you tune the batter and reso "an octave lower" or the same note. Doesn't the other head affect the sound? Just a little help please.
Just a little more information if it's needed: I have a tama piccolo snare with Evans power center reverse dot batter and Evans Genera Reso 300. (They just came on the snare when I bought it)

Well, do you have a drum key? If so, can you turn a wrench? It's kinda simple. Just call them 'heads' next time.
