Play them 'til they go "dead".

actually, you should do the exact opposite. Thats just the sound of strings when they are new. After you play them for awhile the sound will go away

Eat potatoe chips and then play your bass.

Ehh.. normally I always rub with my hands over the strings to make them a bit dirty. I also hate the steely sound. Next time if you buy strings, read a bit of reviews first to see if they are something you want. Use Google for: Bassplayer stringtest and then check the test :thumb:

Take vaselin and rub it up and down the strings. Just a tiny bit though. Not to much.

Depends what sort of steely you mean though if you haven't wound them low enough on the string post they will sound really steely.

I think that 'bright' is the sound I like. As in, the sound just after you boil a set of old strings. Especially for slapping, and tapping. Fingerstyle, though, sounds a bit harsh.

The best way to make strings sound well used, is to.. well.. use them!

will boiling your strings really renew the tone?

yes it does... well, it did for ME at least. however, the newness of the sound did not last as long as i would've hoped :(

It works really well. It adds a nice coating of slickness onto it and then wont have the tin sound either. Exact same technique Jaco used, just he would sometimes use chicken grease also. Even though he did it for fretless, it works the same on fretted too.

I also hate the sound of the new strings (except for slapping, it really doesn't fit well). I've had the same set on my Ibanez since I got them and it is the perfect tone for me.

Give it time, my friend.

If you don't like the sound let your next set be flats.

Yep - flats are great for people who dislike treble.

It's strange for me i like dull lows and sparkly highs pity is i managed to snap my e string after about 3 years use and replaced the whole set so i'm trying to dull the e string down a bit.
I was slapping as well strangely so god knows how it snapped, it took a pair of industrial welding snips the cut the new one.
